1. Consider relevant information

The six-step case solving framework is given below which was applied to the case
Ramesh Patel at Aragon Entertainment Limited

1. Consider the relevant information

About New Horizons Board (NHB)

NHB is considered as centerpiece of innovation for the
organization
It has a group of high-potential leaders who chart companys
potential future decisions
It has six high-potential employees, CIO and senior executives
Working in it gives exposure to senior executives
Patel, Gibson and Maria are the new additions to New Horizons
Board (NHB) team

About

About Gibson
He is a quality control engineer in Aragon
He was on tight deadlines and was working on multiple highpriority projects at the same time

About Gibson and Patel

They joined the organization at the same time, attended the
same orientation and training sessions. They socialized inside
and outside the organization. They had not worked on any
project together

About Sub-team assignment

Patel, Gibson and Maria were given a sub-team assignment with
a month deadline
They divided up the work and decided to meet two-hour weekly
meetings for the next three weeks
Gibson failed to complete the work that was supposed to be
done at the end of frst two meetings
He also failed to provide the data and could not attend third
meeting
Gibson was of impression that Patel would cover for his work
They had just one week remaining for the fnal presentation to
executives

Patel
He wanted to be a part of NHB since he joined the organization
He is an associate director of business development
He desperately wanted to make a positive impression on his
senior colleagues

2. Defi ne the case problem and write a problem statement

Case issues
Patels aspirations of making a positive impression on his
superiors
Gibson was not able to dedicate time due to his busy schedule
Being a friend of Gibson, how should Patel confront him about
the team without jeopardizing their relationship
Since NHB is considered as centerpiece of innovation for this
organization, these three should meet up to the expectations
Two other frms have comparable games. So the team should
meet the deadline which is one week from now

Problem Statement
How should Patel confront Gibson about his work and be ready
with the fnal presentation within the deadline which adds
value to the organization keeping in mind that Gibsons part
of the work is not complete

3. Analyze the facts and underlying assumptions

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) about Subassignment team

Strengths:
High performance and high potential individuals
They know each other well
Weaknesses:
They have different working priorities
Lack of constant communication within themselves (they
meet weekly)
Relying on other people thinking that they would cover up
the work of another
Working disparately
Opportunities:
Chance to project themselves as potential leaders of the
organization
Chance to outshine the competitors products in the
market
Exposure to senior executives

May get chance to rise up fast in the organization

Threats:
If they miss the deadline
a. Competitors may capture market share with their
products
b. Their team assignment might get scrapped
c. May lead to a negative impression about their
capabilities
d. May have serious implications on the fnancial
position of the company
e. They may never get a chance to be on NHB again
May jeopardize Gibson and Patels relationship, if they
confront each other

4. List all possible alternative solutions

Ignore Gibson. divide his work among Patel and Maria and meet the
deadline
Ask for deadline extension
Patel can sensitize Gibson himself or with the help of Maria about the
criticality of the assignment and how much it means to team members
career aspirations and make him work on it
If Gibson doesnt give a positive response, let senior management
know about his busy schedule and ask for a replacement in place of
him
Work together at a single location so that they are constantly updated
with each others progress
Since Gibson is lagging behind, he can take leave for couple of days if
needed and catch up with others

5. Select a solution and prepare to defend it

Since NHB is looked up by the entire organization for innovative ideas and the
team has a critical issue in their hands currently, Gibson needs to realize the gravity
of the situation. For this, Patel with the help of Maria can sensitize about the issue.
Nothing is said about the aspirations of Maria, but only high performance individuals
make it to NHB. So it is presumed that everyone in NHB is a high aspiring individual
and the only chance to prove their ability to senior management is through
successful completion of the sub-team assignment. Since Gibson is lagging far
behind the schedule, he can take leave for couple of days to catch up with others.

Patel cannot ask for deadline because the more they delay, more market
share will be lost to competitors. He cannot ask for replacement because, it can
jeopardize their relationship. Or it would be difficult for a new team member to cope
up with the project and complete it within the deadline.

6. Determine the correct way to carry out the solution
