The document outlines technical standards for windscreen wiper positioning and performance, including requirements for blade positioning at different points on the windscreen and when multiple wiper blades are used.

The wiper blade(s) must be parallel to ±6° of a chord line through the windscreen obscuration line and the outer tip must be a minimum of 61mm from the A-post.

If there is more than one wiper blade, the blades must be a maximum of 24° from each other, no more than 35mm between blade tips at their meeting point, and within ±20mm of each other. Their highest points must also be within 15mm.

SCOPE
This standard is applicable to the front wiper system of all JLR vehicles.

OBJECT
To define windscreen wiper pattern with respect to park and out wipe conditions. This standard
states requirements, over and above legal minimums.

REVIEW
This document must be reviewed at least every three years from the date of the last review or

Title: Wiper Condition at Park and Out Wipe

3

Standard: STJLR.01.5070
Issue: 2

Page: 2 of 4

Wipe condition must be assessed against the following requirements at A-post, park and peak:
3.1 At the A-post the wiper blade or wiper blades are to be parallel 6 to a chord line through
the windscreen obscuration line as shown in figure 1 (see appendix).
3.2 At the A-post the wiper blade or wiper blades outer tip are to be a reference of 61 mm from
the A-post figure 1 (see appendix) to allow pattern over wipe to be calculated and dynamic
clearance requirement to then be confirmed.
3.3 At park the wiper blade or wiper blades are to be parallel 6 to a chord line through the
windscreen obscuration line as shown in figure 1 (see appendix).
3.4 At the cowl the wiper blade or wiper blades outer tip is to be a minimum of 51 mm from the
cowl trim as shown figure 1 (see appendix) to allow pattern over wipe to be calculated and
dynamic clearance requirement to then be confirmed.
3.5 Wiper blade or wiper blades are to park within windscreen solid black obscuration pattern with
no part of the wiper arm and blade assembly being visible above the solid black windscreen
obscuration line when observed in car line x view.
3.6 When the windscreen wiper system consists of more than one arm and blade assembly, the
wiper blades at park must be:
3.6.1

A maximum angle of 24 to each other.

3.6.2

A maximum distance of 35 mm from wiper blade tip / heel to opposing wipe arc where
blades meet.

3.6.3

Within a zone 20 mm of the opposite blade.

as shown in figure 2 (see appendix).

3.7 When the windscreen wiper system consists of two arm and blade assemblies from a central
and an outboard wiper spindle position, the arc of the central wiper shall overlap the arc of the
outboard wiper by a minimum of 10 mm as shown in figure 3 (see appendix).
3.8 When the windscreen wiper system consists of more than one arm and blade assembly, the
highest point of each blade arc must be designed within 15 mm of each other as shown in
figure 4 (see appendix).
