Performed a variety of duties on company Timber Harvest Plans , including:
• Cruised harvest areas using variable plot methods. Recorded survey data on HP handheld
computers.

Crew supervisor. Responsible for comprehensive botanical surveys of timber harvest plan areas,
including plant species lists, survey route maps, and locations of all rare & sensitive species.
Required the ability to sight ID all vascular plants and intimate knowledge of rare plant habitats. As
a supervisor of a 2-3 person crew, I was responsible for receiving daily assignments from the
Botanist, formulating and delegating survey routes, and maintaining crew safety and efficiency in
the field. This included training new members on rare plant ID and habitats, techniques for survey
route sketching, and use of 4wd vehicles and ATV’s.

5/98 –11/98 Forestry Technician (Prescribed Fire) GS-5 Whiskeytown N.R.A. Whiskeytown, CA

Interagency Prescribed Fire crewmember. As part of a 5-person type I crew, traveled to various parks
in the western U.S. to assist park fire staff in implementing prescribed fire projects. My primary
function was to assist staff in installing and reading prescribed fire monitoring plots to NPS
protocols. Required the ability to sight ID vascular plants of many different regions. Served as a Fire
Effects Monitor, Prescribed Fire Weather Specialist, and Ignition Specialist during burn
implementation.

5/96-11/96 Biological Technician (Fire Effects) GS-4 Sequoia/Kings Canyon Nat’l Parks Three Rivers,CA

Fire effects crewmember. Served as part of a 5-person crew to install and read fire effects monitoring
plots throughout the park. Performed all related functions, including plot locations, unknown plant
identification, and database entry. Served as the grass ID specialist for crew. Also served as a
Prescribed Natural Fire Monitor for in-park fires, qualifying as a Prescribed Fire Weather Specialist
and Fire Effects Monitor.

11/94 – 5/96 Biological Technician GS-5 Carlsbad Caverns National Park Carlsbad,
NM
Supervisor: Bill Route, surface RMS; Tim Stubbs, FMO

As the sole technician for the surface resource office, I performed a wide variety of functions,
including-
• Implemented the initial prescribed fire monitoring scheme for the park. Designed plot location plan,
initiated plot database, and installed 20 new brush plots according to NPS RX-80 protocols.
Responsible for all plant ID, including grasses.
• Located 10 old fire effects plots, evaluated their effectiveness, and performed necessary work to
bring up to new NPS protocols.
• Performed bi-annual monitoring of park’s endemic cactus population. Located, photographed, and
evaluated ~300 individuals, logged results into park database, and authored periodic report on status
of population for USFWS.
• Completed park research project on prescribed fire effects on endangered endemic cactus
Corypantha sneedii. Reviewed prior project data, located and gathered final data on 164 individuals,
performed statistical analyses of data, and authored final report on project results.
• Completed 2 semiannual rounds of park’s Mountain Lion monitoring transects. Learned mountain
lion sign ID & habits, transect protocols, and recruited assistants for a 75 Km backcountry transect.
Served as crew supervisor for several overnight and multi-day trips. Organized & entered data,
performed statistical analyses, and authored final report on population status.
• Created comprehensive portable field herbariums for use of park staff. Collected and prepared
samples of grass and brush species and organized into several notebooks with descriptive indicators.
• Used Global Positioning System instruments to perform a thorough update of park trail system for
new park trails map. Coordinating with park GIS specialist, hiked park trail system to evaluate
condition and location of backcountry trail system.

Wildland firefighter/ fire effects monitor. Served as a member of park’s fire crew on in-park and
interagency wildfires. Functioned as an engine crewmember, squad boss, and sawyer on several type
I incidents. Served as a fill-in member on two local type I hotshot crews for 21-day assignments.
Attended RX-80 and learned park grass species, assisting FMO in reading fire effects monitoring
plots. Served as Ignition Specialist for several large interagency prescribed fires.
