Brief Introduction
The (cristian) faith of eternal bliss after death, in which each pain suffered in life will
find its reason, permeates the lyrics of American poet Emily Dickinson and results in
a musical dreamy mood, with soft dissonances and echo effects of short melodic lines.
Yet, even in this atmosphere foretasting the quiet joy of Heaven, the biting experience
of suffering and pain cannot be ignored and emerges before through more harsh dissonances and, then, in the emotional climax on the words That scalds me now. At the
end the composition returns to the mood of the beginning, dissolving little by little in
an atmosphere of blissful oblivion (I shall forget).
Performance Notes
The piece requires a choral sound very soft but colourful, a particular attention to the
dynamic marks and to the balance between the sections, a phrasing calm and quiet.

Emily Dickinson (1830/1886)

Lirica n. 193

I shall know why - when time is over And I have ceased to wonder why Christ will explain each separate anguish
in the fair schoolroom of the sky -

Sapr perch - quando il tempo sar finito e avr cessato di domandarmi perch Cristo spiegher ogni singola angoscia
nelle belle aule del cielo -

He will tell me what "Peter" promised and I - for wonder at his woe I shall forget the drop of Anguish
That scalds me now - that scalds me now!

Mi dir quel che Pietro promise ed io - per meraviglia del suo dolore dimenticher la goccia di angoscia
che ora mi brucia, che ora mi brucia!
