ACID CLEANING

1.0 General
1.1 Scope
This specification covers the procedure of acid cleaning for austentic stainless steel
equipment.
2.0 Acid Cleaning Procdeure
2.1 Surface Preparation
2.1.1 Prior to cleaning, equipment shall be brushed to removed loose scale,
and foreign matter. Especially, stainless wire brush and stainless wire wheel
should be used for stainless equipment.
2.1.2 Visual inspection for defect of the surface shall be carried out. If defect found,
it shall be noted in inspection report, and depending on seriousness,
that will be restored prior to chemical cleaning.
2.1.3 Prior to cleaning, chemical intrusion into clearance such as reinforcing pad, nozzle
sleeve lining etc. must be protected by screw plugging.
2.2 Cleaning Process
Operation process of chemical cleaning shall be as following:
Degreasing -- Rining --Pickling & Passivation -- Drying
2.2.1 Degreasing
i) Degreasing will be executed by spraying the agent at surface.
The agent is a mixture of solvent, detergent and phosphoric acid.
Method : Coating the surface with agent by spraying or brushing.
Time of treatment : 1 3 hours (at ambient)
ii) Water flushing shall be done to remove all grease, oil and other foreign matter.
iii) After removal of chemical, water flushing shall be continued until the flushed
water become clean as same as fresh flushing water.

ACID CLEANING

2.2.2 Rinsing
i) Wash off the acid with the use of a sufficient amount of fresh water or city water.
ii) Direct water under high pressure into the inner surface of equipment
by a high pressure jet pump for cleaning.
iii) The water to be used in water cleaning has usually under 25ppm of chlorine ion
and ph 6-8.
2.2.3 Pickling & Passivation
i) Chemicals and operation
Acid cleaning for Major Component parts -- Viscosity increasing agent,
Nitric acid 68 % (HNO3), Hydrofluoric acid 55 % (HF), Sulphuric acid 98 %
(H2SO4), Silicagel (SiO2), Distilled water, others
ii) Method : Coating shall be done uniformly by spraying or brushing.
iii) Time of treatment : 1~6 Hours (at Ambient)
iv) The pickling is to completely remove oxide scales from welded areas, burnt areas
by welding, and other iron powders which have been missed when pre-cleaning.
Pickling shall be cleaned by coating the cleaning surface evenly with the
chemicals to remove the oxidized scales, grease, the foreign substance.
When the chemical is coated on the surface, ingredient of the chemical solution
shall be split out and the quality of metal shall not be hurt even if it is left alone for long time.
Rinsing shall be completely carried out by repeating several times using high
pressure jet cleaner with clean water until PH of flushed water is reduced to 6-8.
2.2.4 Drying
To be dried naturally or blown by air
3.0 Inspection
When all of the acid cleaning treatment, following items shall be inspected fully by
visual. If not accepted by inspection, recleaning is required.
i) To be free of oxidized scale on welding seams
ii) To be free of iron compound on the surface
iii) To be free of welding spatters on the surface
iv) To be free of loose chemicals
v) Check passive film on surface
