Schemes for Women

WOMEN SCIENTISTS SCHEME (WOS-A)

Research in Basic/Applied Sciences


The Women Scientists Scheme (WOS-A) of the Department of Science and Technology
is aimed to provide opportunities to women scientists and technologists for pursuing research
in frontier areas of science and engineering. A special provision has been made under this
Scheme to encourage those women scientists who have had breaks in their careers. It will
provide a launch pad for them up to the age of 50 years to return to mainstream science and
work as bench-level scientists in the field of science and technology.

Scientific Disciplines
The scholarships have been instituted in the following subject areas : (1) Physical Science
(Code: I); (2) Chemical Science (Code: II); (3) Mathematical Science (Code: III); (4) Life
sciences (Code: IV); (5) Earth Sciences (Code: V); (6) Atmospheric Sciences (Code: VI); (7)
Engineering Sciences (Code: VII). These subject areas will be identified by the respective
subject codes (I-VII) as given in the associated parenthesis. A project proposal should be
submitted in active collaboration with an academic/R&D institution in the chosen subject
area.

Support
This scheme will provide a research grant with an upper limit of Rs.15 lakhs for a welldefined R&D project proposal for a period of three years. This grant will include the fellowship
of the applicant and cost of small equipments, contingencies, travel, consumables etc.
Institutional overhead charges will be extra.

Eligibility
(1)

Persons already in employment need not apply.

(2)

Women scientists, with a minimum of Post Graduate degree, equivalent to MSc in


Basic or Applied Sciences, BTech in Engineering Sciences and MBBS or other equivalent
professional qualifications, are eligible for this scheme. Maximum age limit for this
category is 35 years at the time of submission of the application. The amount of
fellowship for such candidates will be Rs 10,000/- PM.

(3) Women scientists having a PhD in Basic or Applied Sciences, M.Tech. in Engineering
Sciences and MD/MS, DM/MCH in Medical Sciences from recognized Universities

can apply up to the age of 50 years. The amount of fellowship for such candidates will
be Rs 15,000/- PM.
(4) Age relaxation of 5 years would be given to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and
physically challenged category. Attested copies of supporting documents in this regard
must be enclosed.

Desirable
(1) Preference would be given to candidates having a break-in-career due to family reasons.
(2) Also, preference would be given to PhD/equivalent degree candidates. MSc/equivalent
candidates may, however, be also considered if they have a bright academic record and
demonstrable research experience in the form of publications, dissertations, patents,
etc.

Last Date Of Application


The Scheme is now open throughout the year. Therefore, there is no last date of
application.

Procedure for Applying :

Neatly typed application (in single space and on both sides of the paper) should be
submitted in the enclosed format (along with 5 copies) at the address given below.

(2) Proposal should be prepared with care, should be concise and focused.

Women Scientists Fellowship Scheme (WOS-B) - 2010 of


Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi Coordinated
by MACS-Agharkar Research Institute, Pune

The Fellowship Scheme for Women Scientists for societal programmes is initiative of
the Department of Science & Technology. This scheme is addressed to women scientists and
technologists who have break in their careersdue to social responsibilities but have desire
to return to mainstream science and work as bench-level scientists. Women scientists desire
to apply for this scheme are required to develop their own research projMl/poposals
demonstrating scienceacd technological applications for societal benefits.

Objectives
a.

Provide an opportunity (or women scientists to re-enter into active research after a
break in career, through support for S&T based R&Dprojects addressing the needs of
people in unorganized urban or rural areas and

b.

Provide an opportunity for S&Tcapacity building ofwomen on issues relevant in societal


programmes.

Project Proposals for


a.

Research, development and adaptation of technology to improve the quality of life and
provide additional opportunities for income generation in rural areas or urban slums.

b.

Adaptation & transfer of an innovative technology developed ai laboratory level to


field.

c.

Capacity building of applicant in technology areas relevanttothe needs in rural areas.

Nature of Support
Support will include a scholarship grant of Rs.15,000 per month for a period of two
years for candidates with Ph.D., M.Tech., MS/MD and Rs.10,000 per month for candidates
having postgraduate degree fora period of two years.

be considered if found necessary under the work plan.

Who can apply


Indian nationals living in India and who are currently not employed in permanent position
and who possess one of the folibwing qualifications

Candidates selected for award of the fellowship are not expected to register for higher
degree {Ph.D., etc.)during the period of fellowship.
Candidate already having a permanentjoborfellowship will not beconsidered.

The project proposal must show an active association with a field agency in regard to
implementation of the project irrespectiveof the fact whether the candidate is attached
to an educational institution or R&D institution or any other agency. Aletler to th at
effectfromfield agency is required.
Acer! rficale from the host institution, for extending infrastructure! or administrative
support for the project must be enclosed with the application. Similarly, a certificate
from the identified field agency showing the agreement to get associated with (he project
is also required.
If the proposal includes clinical trials involving humans or animals, necessary ethical
clearance following ICMR/CPCSEAguidBlifiesmuslbesought.

Duration of Fellowship
The scholarship will be given initially for duration of two years. The period may be
extended tothe third year in exceptional cases, if recommended by Experts during penodic re
views.
Selection Mechanism: A Committee of Experts will be involved in the selection process.
The two-tier selection process will be adopted involving initial screening and subsequent
individual presentation by the screened-in candidates before a group of Experts. The selected
candidates will be informed by post The list of selected candidates will be displayed on the
website.

Women Scientist Scholarship (WOS-C)

The scheme aims to train women having qualifications in science/engineering/medicine


or allied areas in the area of intellectual property rights (IPR) and their management for a
period of one year. Government is interested in retaining the scientific talent of Indian Women
seeking scientific pursuits and keen to encourage to work from their homes, enabling them to
draw good balance between professional and domestic demands. The scheme is being
coordinated and implemented by Patent Facilitating Centre (PFC) of technology Information,
Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) on behalf of DST.
The selection of candidates is done by an All-India Level written test followed by a
rigourous interview. Selected candidates will be given stipend for one year. Training will
include one month of intensive orientation programme on IPR followed by specialized
workshops and hands-on-training in agencies engaged in practice of IPR.

Scholarship
The scholarship will be admissible for a period of one year and the amount of the
scholarship will be 12,500 p.m. for candidates having MSc/BTech/MBBS/BPharma or
equivalent qualification and 17,500 p.m. for PhD./MTech/MVSc./NS/MD or equivalent.

Long term Objectives


1.

Empower the talented and skilled women who have studied science, engineering,
medicine and allied areas to contribute effectively to the advancement of science and
technology in the country.

2.

Develop a pool of women in India ready to undertake scientific and technical aspects
of intellectual property rights.

Short term objectives


1.

Train talented and skilled women who have studied science, engineering and medicine
in patent searches and other aspects of intellectual property rights enabling them to
take up specialized employment or be self - employed.

2.

Develop a core of professionals for preparing specialized reports based on IPR such
as technology scan and freedom to operate reports.

Eligibility
Candidates should be MSc./Phd. In physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences or
B.E/ B.Tech, M.Tech or MBBS /MS/MD / MVSc/ BPharma / MPharma with good academic
record. Candidates with higher qualification may also apply.Candidates should have a good
familiarity with computers in handling databases, surfing the net and information
searches.Candidates with research experience, preparing project reports and experience of
thesis writing will be preferred.

Age
Candidates should not be more than 50 years of age.

Maulana Azad National Scholarship Scheme


for Meritorious Girl Students Belonging to Minorities
Objective of the Scheme

To recognize, promote and assist meritorious Girl students belonging to National


Minorities who cannot continue their education without financial support.

Purpose of Scholarship
Scholarship will be admissible for expenditure on payment of School/College Fee,
purchase of syllabus books, purchase of stationery/equipments required for the course &
payment of Boarding/Lodging charges.

Important
1.

Application can be downloaded from the web site www.maef.nic.in

Application form can be sent by the student directly to the Foundation by post or can be
submitted by hand from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.on all working days in the office of the
Foundation.

3.

No charges/fee is to be paid to any one for any services.

4.

Sanction letter/cheque for scholarship will sent by Regd. Post directly to the address of
successful candidate on completion of prescribed papers/formalities.

5.

The last date for receipt of application in the office of the Maulana Azad Education
Foundation is August 31st every year.

Who can apply


1.

Only Girl Students belonging to National Minorities, (i.e. Muslims, Christians, Buddhists,
Sikhs, Parsis) can apply.

2.

Should have secured not less than 55% marks (in aggregate) in the secondary school
certificate examination (Class xth) conducted by any recognized Centre/State Board of
Secondary Education.

3.

Family income of the student from all sources should be less than Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees
one lakh only) in the preceding financial year:

Should have Confirmed admission in class-XI.

5.

The University/College/Institute offering admission should be recognized by the


Government at the Central or State level or any other competent authority.

A student getting a scholarship from any other source would not be eligible for this
Scholarship.

8.

The amount of Scholarship will be Rs. 12,000/- (Rupees twelve thousand only) which
will be released in two installments of Rs. 6,000/- each. The first installment will be
released after sanction of scholarship and the second installment will be released when
the student will submit proof of passing class XIth, and adminsson to Class XIIth in the
office of the Foundation.

The scholarship is given to student passing Xth exam and taking admission in XIth in
the year when result of Xth exam is declared.
