The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is the most widely held health and safety qualification
of its kind in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the qualification since it was launched in 1989.
Who is the course for?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is designed for managers, supervisors, safety staff, and employee representatives from all
types of organisation who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues to be able to manage risks and carry out their
functions effectively.
Many larger organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a key part of their management or supervisors
development programme. Smaller organisations, operating in lower risk environments, often choose the NEBOSH National General
Certificate as the appropriate qualification for the manager taking the lead on health and safety issues.
The course is also suitable for those embarking on a career in health and safety, providing a valuable foundation for further
professional study (such as the NEBOSH National Diploma).
Holders of the National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety
and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and
Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
Students will need access to the web via a broadband connection.
Course Structure
The NEBOSH National General Certificate is divided into 3 Units:
Unit NGC1 Management of health and safety

Element 1 Foundations in health and safety
Element 2 Health and safety management systems 1 Policy
Element 3 Health and safety management systems 2 Organising
Element 4 Health and safety management systems 3 Planning
Element 5 Health and safety management systems 4 Measuring, audit and review
Unit GC2 Controlling workplace hazards
Element 1
Workplace hazards and risk control
Element 2
Transport hazards and risk control
Element 3
Musculoskeletal hazards and risk control
Element 4
Work equipment hazards and risk control
Element 5
Electrical safety
Element 6
Fire safety
Element 7
Chemical and biological health hazards and risk control
Element 8
Physical and psychological health hazards and risk control
Unit GC3 Health and safety practical application

Candidates are required to carry out a safety inspection of a workplace and prepare a report that persuasively urges management to
take appropriate action.
Course Duration
Minimum of 125 study hours
Students should complete their study hours, exercises and final examinations within 6 months of purchase.
Students may be subject to AOSH re-registration fees after this 6 month period.
Start date / location: Any time, any place.
Assessment and Certification
Unit NGC1 and Unit GC2 are each assessed by a 2 hour written examination. The GC3 practical application can
be word processed, and is to be completed in a workplace situation and returned to AOSH within 1 week of the examination day.
NEBOSH issue a qualification certificate once a Candidate has achieved at least a Pass grade in all three Units.
Examinations held in March / June / September / December.
