INTRODUCTION
This is an entrepreneurship survey that was conducted by Group (8) of section (3) Entrepreneurship
Education Class (EED 301) at the William V. S. Tubman University, this survey was conducted in Pleebo
City in the various zones / communities (Zone # 9 – 14) rooting out some fact as it relates to its Regional
demography and industrial location, Labor markets, Employment trends and industrial and
commercial activities. Our assumed data analysis and statistics was base on both our data we got from
the field, interview we got from some prominent members found in our assigned community and also
information from both the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo information Services (LISGIS) and the
National Population Housing Census statistics for Pleebo in 2008. Even though, some private and public
entities denied us some level of information saying that those information we were seeking is vital and
important, and couldn’t trust us with them.
This survey started October 8, 2021 and ended October 23, 2021.
Step I. Regional demography and industrial location
1.1 Identification of relevant rural and urban Centers

Zones Communities Description of Communities (Rural/Urban)

#9 Gebio (Native & Civilize) Civilize - Urban Native - Rural
# 10 Diaberville & Scottville Urban
# 11 New Pleebo( New Georgia) Urban
# 12 Gedetarbo Urban
# 13 Gbolobo Rural
# 14 Hospital, Factory Camp, Div. 3 Urban
# 15 Void or Not Existing

NOTE: Doing our survey studies, we considered these above communities as urban because, most of
them have modern facilities that are found within an urban settlement like; Electricity, industry, Health
centers, Schools, Churches, Safe drinking water, entertainment centers, sport pitches vocational
institution etc. while communities listed as rural do not contain most of them.

1.2 Determine Size of their Populations

Zones District Total Males Females Household
#9 Pleebo/Sodoken 875 390 485 82
# 10 Pleebo/Sodoken 915 410 505 98
# 11 Pleebo/Sodoken 1812 897 915 150
# 12 Pleebo/Sodoken 875 372 503 109
# 13 Pleebo/Sodoken 1920 942 978 148
# 14 Pleebo/Sodoken 929 409 520 95
# 15 Pleebo/Sodoken
Grand Total 7326 3420 3906 682

NOTE: Pleebo is a City located in Maryland County. It is the largest and most commercial city in
Maryland with an estimated population of about 22,693. (National Population Housing Census – 2008)
These estimated values came from the field survey we have conducted as a group, by meeting with
some of the Zone leaders, Clan Chief and also making use of the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo
information Services (LISGIS) and the National Population Housing Census statistics for Pleebo in 2008.
1.3 Dominant industrial and commercial activities
During our survey, the only industry we encountered was the Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) located
in zone 14, factory camp. The dominant commercial activities that we saw were mainly rice, medium
size businesses and drinks. Most of the women on this street are selling dry goods (salts, soap, onions,
oil, rice etc). There were also small and medium size businesses, where almost all of their goods are
bought and sold. There were also most men that are involved in selling in these shops.

Step 2: Labour Markets

2.1 Estimates of the proportion of the population employed in (a) Public Sector Jobs and (b) Private
Sector Jobs
List of some Private and Public entities in our assigned area
Employment % population Private Public
Self 45 CRC Company Life for Life Junior high Sch.
Private 40 CRC Hospital Pleebo Health Center
Public 15 CRC High School Gedetarbo Circuit Court
LICOSSES Teacher Training Gedetarbo Town Hall
First Assembly of God High Sch.
Kids Success elementary Sch.

During our survey we find out that 70% of the jobs found in our assigned area in Pleebo constitute self-
employed. 20% are employed within the private sectors like the ones shortlisted above, while the
remaining 10% of the jobs are those in the public sector .

2.2 Estimates of the current rate of unemployment, (percent of adults without salaries employment
and not self- employed).
Adults % of Unemployment % of Employment % of Self employment
Male 40% 35% 25%
Female 30% 10% 60%

During our survey, we categorized people who were qualified and seeking job opportunity and people
who aren’t qualified and not seeking job both constitute the 40% of male unemployed in our assigned
area. We also observe that most of the women in Pleebo (assign area) are engage in Petty trading, small
and medium size businesses which constitute the 60% of self employment for female.

2.3 The quality of private sector jobs available

Based on our survey carried on at our assigned area in Pleebo, we observed that about 30% of the
people occupy quality jobs in the Private sector. When we say quality job, we are referring to having
valuable assets like a well structure building or (house(s), living a luxury life, owning other properties like
cars, motorbike etc while the remaining 70% are considered less quality because of the minimum wages
or salary they earned. These jobs only provide them their basic needs like food, clothes and shelter for
survival purposes.

2.4 Public sectors that have been most affected by redundancies

During our survey, we observed that, over the past 3-4years, the Pleebo Health Center located in Zone
#11 New Pleebo Community, have been most affected by redundancies.
2.5 Estimate of proportion of University graduates (any field of studies) who remain unemployed for
(a) At least 6 month after graduation (b). At least 1 year after graduation (c). 3 years (d). Ever

Estimates of University graduates( any field of studies) who remain unemployed

6 months 1 year 3 years Ever
30% 10% 25% 5%

We encountered 55 university graduates during our survey. We also discovered that out of the total
number of graduates, 30% are employed, while the remaining 70% are considered unemployed. The
70% of unemployed graduates were broken down according to the above chart.

Step 3: Employment trends

3.1 Predicted changes of capacity in difference industrial sectors
During our survey, we observe that the Cavalla Rubber Corporation located in zone #14, is only involved
in the processing of rubber and not into finish product due to lack of training and skills of personnel. The
process rubber can later be transported to Ivory Coast in other to be turn into finish product like (rubber
dishes, spoons, tub etc). In other to forgo the embarrassment of transporting process rubber to another
country, they could process their own rubber here in Pleebo by sending Personnel for capacities
building( training) abroad and in the near future starts to produce tertiary products here in Pleebo.

3.2 Trend or predictions in the types of job likely to be created the private sector
While being in the field, we observe that in the near future, if CRC sent personnel abroad for capacities
building, when they return, there will be more quality jobs available, because more people will be
employed and trained by those same personnel and some of them might venture into the business
world and create job opportunity for others. Nevertheless, we did foresee many private sector jobs
opportunity in those communities. What may happen in the near future is that people with quality jobs
and more money, including those who work for the private institutions will invest in the community by
expanding small businesses. People with various skills like; tailoring, masonry, carpentry and even
university graduate will be benefitted.

3.3 The predicted regions and locations where this growth in employment is likely
We observed that Pleebo is a congested and populated region in Maryland, and the economic is center
around petty traders, and medium businesses where their goods are bought and sold. So for possible
growth, there should be an increase from petty trading to medium business, medium businesses to
larger businesses to provide employment for other in this region.
