DUE DATE ________

POINTS ________

CHOOSE FIVE OF THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS. ASSIGN LABELS, WRITE THE

OBJECTIVE FUNCTION, FIND YOUR CONSTRAINTS, SHOW THE GRAPH, LABEL THE
AXES AND USE THE STRAIGHT EDGE. MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL, ANSWER THE
QUESTION.
1.) Ken L. Ration Dog Food
Ken L. Ration manufactures dog food. He wants to advertise in a magazine and on
radio. The magazine charges $60 per ad and requires the purchase of at least three
ads. The radio station charges $150 per commercial minute and requires the
purchase of at least four minutes. Ken can spend at most $900 on advertising. Each
magazine ad reaches 12,000 people while each commercial minute reaches 16,000
people. How many ads and commercial minutes should he purchase to reach the
most people? What is the most number of people he can reach?
2.) Widgets and Gadgets
A manufacturer makes widgets and gadgets. At least 500 widgets and 700 gadgets
are needed to meet minimum daily demands. The machinery can produce no more
than 1200 widgets and 1400 gadgets per day. The combined number of widgets and
gadgets that the packaging department can handle is 2300 per day. If the company
sells widgets for 40 cents and gadgets for 50 cents each, how many of each item
should be produced for maximum daily income? What is the maximum daily income?
3.) Bookcases
Joe has a small carpentry shop in his basement to make bookcases. He makes two
sizes, large and small. His profit on a large bookcase is $50 and his profit on a small
bookcase is $20. It takes Joe 6 hours to make a large bookcase and 2 hours to make
a small one. He can spend only 24 hours each week on his carpentry work. He must
make at least two of each size each week. How many of each size should Joe make
each week to obtain the maximum weekly profit? What is the maximum weekly
profit?
4.) Racing and Free-Style Skis
A sporting goods company manufactures two types of skis, a racing model and a
free-style model. Each pair of racing skis requires 3 hours of labor, and the company
can produce at most 20 pairs of racing skis per day. Each pair of free-style skis
require 2 hours of labor, and the company can produce at most 30 pairs of free-style
skis per day. The maximum number of hours available for ski productions is 96. If
the profit on each pair of racing skis is $30 and the profit on each pair of free-style
skis is $40, find the number of each that should be manufactured in order to
maximize profits. What is the maximum profit?
5.) Ceramic Plates and Bowls
A ceramic artist makes and sells plates and bowls. The kiln capacity permits her to
produce at most 40 of these items combined. It takes her half an hour to make a
plate and 1 hour to make a bowl, and the total amount of time spent on these items
cannot exceed 25 hours per week. Her profit is $6 per plate and $9 per bowl.

Assuming she sells all the items made, how many of each should she make per week
in order to realize a maximum profit? What is her maximum profit?

6.) Water Skis: Trick and Slalom

A manufacturing company makes two types of water skis, trick skis and slalom skis.
It takes 6 hours to fabricate the trick skis and 1 hour to finish them. The slalom skis
take 4 hours to fabricate and 1 hour to finish. The maximum time available for
fabricating the skis is 108 labor-hours a day, and the maximum time available for
finishing skis is 24 labor-hours a day. The profit on a set of trick skis is $40 and on
slalom skis is $30. How many of each type of ski should be manufactured each day
to realize a maximum profit? What is the maximum profit?
7.) Racing Car Sets
The Kepler Model Company is planning to market a variety of electric racing car sets.
Each set will contain at least 8 sections of curved track and 4 sections of straight
track. No set will contain more than 36 sections in all, and no set will contain more
than 20 sections of either type of track. If the company makes a profit of $0.40 on
each straight section and $0.65 on each curved section, what combination of track
sections will be most profitable for the company?
8.) Inflatable Boats
A manufacturing plant makes two types of inflatable boats, two-person boats and
four-person boats. Each boat is cut and assembled by two separate departments as
listed in the table below. In addition, the distributor will not take more than 750 twoperson boats each month. How many boats of each type should be manufactured
each month to maximize the profit? What is the maximum profit?

9.) Voice Recorders

A manufacturer of digital voice recorders makes a $20 profit on each standard model
and a $30 profit on each deluxe model. In order to meet the daily demand, the
company needs to produce at least 150 of the standard models and at least 100 of
the deluxe models each day. The production process limits the total daily output to
no more than 500 models. How many of each model should be made in order to
obtain the maximum profit?
10.) Publisher Shipping Costs
A certain publisher ships 300 to 450 books each week to a national chain of
bookstores. Some of the books are shipped from the publishers eastern warehouse,
and some are shipped from the publishers western warehouse, but at least one third
of them must be shipped from each warehouse. The shipping cost per book is $0.37

from the eastern warehouse and $0.55 from the western warehouse. Find the
MINIMUM weekly shipping cost for these orders.
11.) Ordering Dog Food
A grocer is preparing an order of dog food for a two-month period. The grocer
normally stocks two brands, Pedigree Pellets and Mongrel Mash. These come in bags
of the same size, and the grocer has display and storage space for a total of 800
bags. The grocer expects to sell at least twice as much Mash as Pellets. The grocer
buys Pedigree Pellets for $4.50 and sells it for $7.00. The grocer buys Mongrel Mash
for $1.50 and sells it for $3.00. If the grocer does not wish to order more than $1500
worth of dog food for the two-month period, how much of each kind should be
ordered?
12.) Paper Mill
A paper mill can convert wood pulp into either notebook paper or newsprint. The mill
can produce at most 200 total units per day. At least 10 units of notebook paper and
80 units of newsprint are required by regular customers. The profit on a unit of
notebook paper is $500, and the profit on a unit of newsprint is $350. How many
units of each type should the mill produce to maximize profit? What is the maximum
profit?
13.) Nutrition Center Cereal
A nutrition center sells health food to mountain-climbing teams. The Trailblazer mix
package contains one pound of corn cereal mixed with four pounds of wheat cereal
and sells for $9.75. The Frontier mix package contains two pounds of corn cereal
mixed with three pounds of wheat cereal and sells for $9.50. The nutrition center has
available 60 pounds of corn cereal and 120 pounds of wheat cereal. How many
packages of each mix should the center sell to maximize its income? What is the
maximum income?
