Two years after the 2013 catastrophic floods ripped

through Alberta, devastated former resort community
Hidden Valley residents remain in the lurch with little
assistance or compensation for the loss of their homes
and community, from the provincial government, Siksika Band, or insurance companies.
While the Disaster Recovery Program (DRP) dished
out over $90 million to Siksika Nation - whose land the
community was built and leased on - the area remains
condemned and deemed unfit for human habitation.
With Hidden Valleys $44 million in residential property losses, Albertas Disaster Recovery Program only
provides financial assistance for uninsurable loss and
damages on primary residences not applicable to secondary or seasonal homes.
To date, only an estimated 20 per cent of the residences have received some form of compensation. While a
majority of the properties were considered secondary
homes, community members said most of the residents
lived in Hidden Valley for more than six months out of
the year.
Although 32 residences have received DRP funding,
the remaining 270 are still waiting.
The people who did not own any other property in
Canada and go south to the States every year were given
DRP money, and those who live in Alberta and support our economy were deemed secondary residence
or vacation residence and didnt qualify, said Sharin
Mackie, spokesperson for the Hidden Valley Disaster
Relief Committee and former resident.
The PC government compensated secondary residents in High River and Lac Des Arcs. They are covering the Kananaskis Golf Course and they even covered
them for lost wages, but they havent helped us. They
paid $33 million for 11 homes in Calgary off the Elbow
River. So they did pick and choose. Were hoping that
the new government will be an awful lot more fair.
Mackie, who added that Hidden Valley was a permanent community for 39 years, said community members
had to wait for the whole Siksika Nation to be pumped
out before they were allowed back into the area, leaving Hidden Valley under water for 20 days. She added
power and water services were never turned back on
- making it hard to clean - while anything salvageable
was either destroyed or covered in mould.
According to Mackie, over 50 per cent of the Hidden
Valley population had senior status and had sunk their
life savings into their lost homes. Yet, with the current
change in government, and changes within the Siksika
Band, the committee remains optimistic.

Child-care program aims to unite

seniors and toddlers

An unconventional approach unparalleled in Strathmore with emphasis
on enhancing skills through a curricular-based child-care program, intends to
connect local seniors and preschoolers
in only a few months time and cater to
demand.
Following a partnership between Calgary-based for-profit company Kids U
and AgeCare, children and seniors are
provided with the opportunity to build
brain development and brain functions
by promoting efforts to work together.
What happens, from a seniors standpoint, is that theyre starting to lose a
lot of their executive functioning skills
and the children are building theirs, so
the material basis that they use are very
similar, said Anil Karim, executive director for Kids U.
The common misconception is that
seniors are going to come and theyre
only there to teach children. But theres
a lot of activities where they can cooperate and build things together, and it
helps both the seniors and the child.
Based on two philosophies, the Montessori method and the Reggio Emilia
method, the program combines both
curriculums day care and preschool.
To compliment the brain-based learning, the rooms in the Strathmore facility,
located next to Sagewood Seniors Community, are dedicated to either right-
brain learning or left-brain learning.

Through fabrics, mirrors, colours,
lights, and natural materials, children,
aged three, four, and five years old, will
have a chance to stimulate their creativity and play organically. Other rooms
are structured, with focus on logic, numbers, words, and sciences. Karim said he
was approached by numerous Strathmore families, who struggle with making a decision between child-care and
preschool.
A lot of times child-care and preschools are treated very differently and
child care programs go through basic
child-care needs of a child and some
early childhood development, Karim
said. Parents put their children in for
10 to 12 hours a day and thats the type
of care that theyre expecting. When
they go to a preschool they go for two
to three hours a day and theyre only expecting that the child is going to learn,
and so it creates this divide between
learning versus care. Kids U, bridges
both together.
According to Karim, the program is
dedicated to developing a childs five
developmental domains: fine motor,
gross motor, social and emotional, language, and cognitive. Upon building
confidence in these areas, the child will
then be paired with a senior to engage
in numerous activities including reading, working on a puzzle, or playing
games. However, the staff at Sagewood
Seniors Community said the program
will benefit the seniors in more ways

than improving their skills.
A lot of time when residents are isolated or dont have any visitors, they
develop loneliness or boredom, said
Michelle Pham, general manager for
Sagewood Seniors Community.
Our goal is trying to reduce that,
and there is a lot of joy residents have
when theyre around small children. Just
watching them play, doing an activity, or
having them read to the residents or vice
versa, is a huge benefit to the resident.
The Strathmore centre will be Kids
Us fifth facility, and will be one of two
such projects partnering with AgeCare
the other one being in south Calgary.
Kids U caters to over 400 children and
has another 150 kids on waiting lists.
In Strathmore, the child-care centre expects to accommodate 55 children. Currently waiting on their permit, the centre, which is already built, is anticipated
to open its doors in September.

TOWN OF
Bylaw 15-14 proposes to amend Land Use Bylaw 14-11 by adding the following
to Section 1.18 Notification, Issuance and Validity of Development Permit:
12. Subject to Section 13., when an application for a development permit is
refused, another application for a development permit for the same or similar
use of the site shall not be made by the same or any other applicant until six
months after the date of the refusal of the application.
13. When an application for a development permit is refused, another
application for a development on the same site may be made within six months
after the date of the refusal of the application if:
(a) the application was refused because the application did not comply with
this Bylaw; and
(b) the development that is the subject of the subsequent application
complies with this Bylaw.
A copy of the proposed Bylaw may be inspected by the public during regular
office hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday at the Town Office (680
Westchester Road, Strathmore, AB), or can be found on the Town website

Shaving locks for a cure

Inspired by his older brother Ken Jr.,
who was the first in his family to shave
his head for cancer, 11-year-old Grade
6 Wheatland Elementary student Chris
Hitch followed suit after the recent
passing of his grandfather and grandmother.
On June 26, he did his part by shaving his long hair in front of his peers,
where he donated his locks to make
wigs for kids who are battling cancer.
Hitch, who was diagnosed with
ADHD and asthma at a young age, did
not have second thoughts about helping out kids who are suffering more
than he is.
It was Grade 4 that my grandpa
passed away, said Hitch. I wanted to
sort of help find a cure for cancer and
I heard that they were doing a head
shaving for them.
At school, his fellow classmates told

him to get a hair cut and he thought
getting rid of his hair for a cure was the
best way to do it.
Most of the time I would see some
kids who were bald and I would think
why dont they have a wig, said Hitch.
My parents say get a hair-cut and donate it.
Both of his parents, Ken and Angela,
could not be any more proud of their
youngest child to help cancer patients.
Thats really important, hes got
ADHD and severe asthma, so hes very
heartfelt with people, said Ken. When
he heard that his brother was going to
do it, he asked his mom and I if he
could do it and I said yeah, as long as
you keep it going.
Ken said that Chris is determined to
fundraise.
He already has close to $200 worth
of pledges, said Ken. Were actually
going to run it through the summer
Residents look to new

government for help

Our government shares many of
the frustrations that people have had
with the previous governments response to this disaster, said Minister
of Municipal Affairs and Service Alberta Deron Bilous. We are currently
reviewing the Disaster Recovery Program and the lessons learned from
2013, so we can improve the program
going forward. We will be working
with affected residents to resolve outstanding claims, and we are committed to ensuring that people and communities receive the amount for which
they are eligible.
Since the floods, the 300 residences,
or nearly 1,500 community members,
were forced to move to small communities within Alberta, BC, and even
the United States. While many of them
were seasonal, there was misconception that those residences were in possession of two homes. The Canadian
Red Cross also organized a reunion
for the community members earlier
this year in Calgary.
Some insurance companies have
paid up, and were still working with
others to have them come forward
and do the same thing, said former
primary resident Dick Burgis, who is
also still awaiting some compensation.
There have been rumours that
theyre working away at trying to clean
some stuff up, but nothing has been
cleaned up yet. Its an ongoing battle
were trying to recover some dollars
from Siksika because we paid the rent

to get that back and of course were
working with the insurance companies to come up with a compromise.
Despite rumours of improvements
to the area, Municipal Affairs was unable to provide information regarding
their financial assistance to the area at
this time.
The Hidden Valley Disaster Relief
Committee sought legal advice in regards to insurance matters, and will
continue their efforts to make sure the
Hidden Valley residents receive compensation for their losses.

smoke around the baby. New babies should sleep in
an area near where the parents sleep but NOT with
the parents. All these suggestions will minimize
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Even though electronic cigarettes are not legal for
sale in Canada, some people still use them. One
of the problems with these devices is that there is
no regulations about what they contain besides the
liquid nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new so
there is a lack of long-term scientific evidence to
support their safety. There still is concern that their
use will lead to nicotine addiction.
Sometime, people who are hard of hearing dont
let on this is so. We want to know about it. When
talking to you about a new prescription, we want to
be sure you hear the information as well as read it in
the handout. Hearing and seeing helps learning. If
your hearing isnt great, we can always move to a

Around the 18th Century, Bobs forefathers lived in what is
now part of Poland, although they were of German descent.
His father immigrated to Medicine Hat in 1929 at the age
of 24 years, and managed to obtain work as a farm labourer
in southeast Alberta and neighbouring Saskatchewan. Six
years later, in 1935, he started working in greenhouses in
Medicine Hat, and in 1939 he and a partner purchased two
greenhouses in Redcliff. After the war ended they expand-

and Bobs father purchased what was originally
known as the Harwood Dairy Farm, 5 km east of
Strathmore, in 1951. He sponsored about 80 relatives and friends from Germany, brought them to
Canada and was able to give some of them work,
in family-owned businesses like the farm and
greenhouses.
Bob was born in 1944, the youngest of three
brothers, in Redcliff, where he attended school
for nine years, before attending Medicine High
School for three years. He remembers that in 1965
there was a really severe hailstorm that shattered
all the greenhouses at Redcliff, and all the roofs
had to be replaced.
Following high school, Bob attended Cal Poly
College in California, where he graduated with
a B.Sc. majoring in Ornamental Horticulture in
1967.
Arlenes family on her mothers side originated
in Odessa, Russia and members of the family immigrated to North Dakota in the early 1900s, before moving on to Saskatchewan. Her grandfather
moved to Hilda, Alta. where her mother was born.
Her father, John Weber, was born in Frankfurt,
Germany, and when still a baby the family moved
to California, before moving to Saskatchewan.
Arlene was born in Medicine Hat in 1945, the
eldest of three children. She took all her education
in Medicine Hat, then dental assistant courses at
SAIT and NAIT. Bob and Arlene met in high school
and were married in 1965 in California. They had
three children and now have three grandchildren.
Bobs brother ran the farm until he became too
sick, and it was rented out thru 1984. This is when
Bob and Arlene moved in, and continued to run it
as a cattle ranch, with up to 500 head. As a hobby,
they started a market garden and built greenhous-
es, where they could grow bedding plants, with

containers and hanging baskets, etc. Following retirement in 2006, they sold the ranch and moved
to an acreage in Namaka, and spent some of their
time between Parksville, B.C. and Namaka.
In the fall of 2013, they returned to Strathmore
to be closer to their grandchildren, and now only
spend a couple of months in the early fall in Parksville, before heading south to Yuma for the winter.
Their grandchildren are now playing baseball and
other sports and Bob and Arlene support them
in every way they can, which includes travelling
around the province.
Their community activities include being members of Strathmore United Church since 1984. Arlene has been a member of the Board for Victim
Services and served on the Strathmore Hospital
Board, with a term as chairman, and she works
with the Christmas Hamper Society. Bob keeps
busy cutting grass at the Namaka acreage and fixing things that always need attention.

Gleichen multi-car collision

A six-vehicle pile up on Highway 1 near Gleichen left two in hospital, on with serious injuries.
Gleichen RCMP and County of Wheatlands Fire
and EMS crews attended to the scene, which occurred at 11:50 p.m. on June 28.
The collision was a result of a pick-up driving
in the wrong direction. The driver was heading
west in the eastbound lane and ended up hitting
another pick-up truck driving in the oncoming direction.
After the incident occurred, several other cars
stopped to assist those involved, when just a few
minutes later a tractor-trailer collided with the
original vehicles and some of those who stopped
to help. With the inevitable increase of travellers

on the roads, the RCMP warns drivers to be safe
to avoid further accidents.
Give yourself lots of time, said Sgt. James
McLaren from the Gleichen RCMP.
As soon as you start rushing you start cutting
corners and safety is usually the first thing compromised. People must give themselves lots of
time to get where they are going. You are going to
eventually get where you are heading.
At the time of print, the driver of the east bound
truck, a 38-year-old male, was still in Foothills
hospital with serious injuries while the 30-yearold female of the westbound car was treated for
her injuries and released from the Strathmore
Hospital Monday morning.
An investigation is currently ongoing.

First two weeks in the legislature

Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks

On May 5th, Albertans voted for a new government led by the NDP and for a larger official opposition to hold it to account, led by the Wildrose.
I promised that we would work constructively together where possible, but be tough when necessary. We would not just oppose, but also propose.
In short two weeks that the Legislative Assembly
met in June, we did both of those things.
We reached out to the NDP to work together on
issues that we believed common agreement could
be reached on, but fought them on issues where we
will just have to disagree.
Firstly, we worked cooperatively with the NDP
government on Bill 1 to ban corporate and union
donations. For far too long, the influence of big
money from unions and corporations has had a corrupting influence on politicians and political parties
in this province.
The Bill banned cash donations to parties, but
still allowed unions to donate the time of their staff
to campaigns, a common practice employed to help
the NDP. While we proposed amendments to fix
this major loophole and others, the NDP refused to
accept them. We did manage to successfully amend
the bill to limit the practice of unsecured loans to
parties from corporations and unions, but most other common sense amendments were rejected without much reason given.
The governments Bill 2 raised business taxes by
20 per cent, and raised the top marginal personal
income tax rate by 50 per cent, retroactively. This
constitutes the largest increase to both personal and
business taxes in the history of Alberta. While raising taxes on businesses might sound good in casual
conversation, it threatens to do major damage to
the economy.
Alberta no longer has the most competitive business taxes in Canada; British Columbia, Ontario and
Quebec all have lower business tax rates than Alberta now. In the global economy, capital is highly
mobile and it seeks out the most attractive place to
invest. With a 50 per cent increase to the minimum
wage, a hike to energy royalty rates, a new carbon
tax, higher income taxes and higher business taxes,
it is hard to imagine that Alberta will be as an attractive target for investment in the coming years.
In an effort to take some of the bite out of these

measures on small businesses, I proposed an
amendment to the NDP bill to reduce the small
business tax rate by one per cent. This attempt at
working constructively with the NDP to ensure that
our small business owners and their employees
stay competitive was rejected, and the amendment
failed.
The only thing that the NDP is determined to
hike faster than taxes, is spending. I wrote in these
pages several weeks ago that if the NDP wanted
to pass their mini-budget, that they should provide
adequate detail for their spending plan and enough
time to properly scrutinize it in the legislature. Unfortunately, none of these requests were heeded.
The mini-budget (Bill 3) authorized $18 billion
in spending, but MLAs were allowed a mere three
hours to debate it. Put another way, the government
allowed only one hour of debate for every $6 billion
dollars that it just spent. Additionally, the government only provided three pages worth of details
as to how to spend the $18 billion. Suffice to say,
this is extraordinarily worrisome to me and the Wildrose Caucus.
We could not let such a massive sum of money be
spent without any details or accountability, and so
we stayed in the legislature debating and attempting to get answers out of the NDP until after midnight for nearly two weeks. Under questioning, the
NDP managed to tell us how much of that $18 billion was new and unbudgeted spending, sort of. We
were given five different numbers in the span of 24
hours: $1.8 billion, $1.1 billion, $776 million, $682
million and $624 million. In Question Period, the
Minister of Finance finally told me that it was in the
$600 million area.
This level of clarity with such vast sums of money
does not inspire much confidence.
Despite very significant differences in opinion
on many issues, both the Wildrose and NDP MLAs
are happy that Alberta has entered a new era, and
friendships across party lines have already begun
to develop.
My colleagues and I will continue to work helpfully with the NDP government where we can, such
as on banning corporate and union donations, but
we will also provide a tough opposition when required. As it turns out, it is more often than I would
have liked.

Four-plex in downtown forges on

In the wake of last years discussions
surrounding water pressure issues and
overall quality of infrastructure, town
council sanctioned the approval of a
development permit for a four-plex on
121 Waddy Lane.
As part of two exceeding variances
that required councils attention on
June 17, the fourplex, which is currently zoned R2X, or medium density attached housing, needed the maximum
allowable density of 55 dwelling units
per hectare to increase to 71.8 units per
hectare.
The decision to grant the development permit came seven months after
council received letters from Strathmore residents concerned about water
pressures and a deteriorating mainline that is scheduled to be replaced
in 2017. Residents experienced issues
with the pressure and even deemed
their fixtures inadequate when used
concurrently; however after inspections
and testing by EPCOR, councillors were

satisfied that the issue, for now, was put
to bed.
I just wanted to reassure the public
that we had addressed those water issues that we brought up before, said
Councillor Denise Peterson.
Generally pressures are detected at
60 pounds per square inch (PSI), and
the hydrants positioned at Wheatland
Lodge and at the intersection at Waddy
Lane and Wheatland Trail, were observed to be 50 PSI and 43 litres per
second. In November, administration
assured council the readings were adequate for domestic consumption. With
the project pushing forward, administration approached council regarding
the maximum allowable density and
changes to the front property line from
six metres to four metres. The town had
circulated 24 letters to neighbouring
residences on May 22, informing them
about the issue of the development permit application coming before council
for consideration. However, the town
received no responses before the regu-
lar council meeting two weeks ago.

According to administration, by affording relaxations for the front setback, infill development and redevelopment can be accommodated, while
also providing space for the necessary
six off-street parking stalls at the back
of the property without changing the
building design.
By pulling the building towards
the front property line we were able
to meet the parking requirement of
1.5 off-street parking stalls per dwelling unit in full, said Werner Fischer,
director of planning and development
for the town. The easiest thing to sacrifice in order to increase density, are
the front setbacks, which is why downtown is often typically residential infills. We recognize, that in the past, the
town had approved four-plexes on 50
foot lots.
Two lots were re-designated in November 2014, to R2X, with the intention
of building a fourplex on the property.
Projects with the intention of redeveloping the downtown core are supported by the towns Municipal Development Plan and the Downtown Overlay
District. The Downtown Design Review
Committee (DDRC), also supported the
exterior design and finishing materials.
We dont believe that granting the
relaxation will unduly affect the amenities of the neighbourhood or the use,
enjoyment, or value of neighbouring
properties, and we believe the approval
is consistent with policy direction provided by the Municipal Development
Plan, Fischer added.
Because the development officer may
only grant relaxations up to 25 per
cent, council was required to address
the issue, and approved the development permit application with conditions attached.

graduate who performed in
Rosebud Theatres Diary of
Anne Frank, Barefoot in the
Park, and May and Joe, plays
Jesus for the third time in the
2015 Badlands Passion Play.
Krogman joined the Passion Play in 2011 as the Jesus
understudy ready to step in
if the actor was unable to perform. He took over the main
role in 2013. Its kind of
humbling, he said. Im not
going to be able to represent
every single persons version
of Jesus. ... Were just trying to
tell a story the best we can.
The uniqueness of that
story has kept Krogman coming back. The scale is huger
than any other show Ive had
the opportunity to be a part
of, he said. The content is
unique as well. Its such an
important story in that it has
all kinds of impact on today,
in the modern context.
Even after five years, the
script hasnt gotten old.
Theres been little tweaks in
the script that have streamlined it, he said. Im really
excited for the chance to go
at it again with the insight
of four years, and the insight
that the directors have had
too. ... It constantly gets better and better, and really, the
fifth year is kind of The Version.
The Passion Play will introduce a new script in 2016.
Krogman is also moving on,
taking a Masters degree at
Regent College. Its a degree
in Christianity and the Arts
and that intersection, and its
really become hugely inter-
esting to me, he said. Thats

one impact being part of the
Passion Play has had on me.
Its given me a hunger to engage in that (discussion).
After the degree, hell may
explore teaching, film work,
directing theatre, and writing for stage and film, but
hell miss many things about
the Passion Play. Im going
to miss this family. Its such
an amazing community that
makes this thing possible,
he said. Theres been a lot of
friendships and working relationships that have had quite
a bit of time to develop and to
establish.
Hell also miss the size
and scope and spectacle of
the story, which, he said, is a
great reason to come see the
show even if we arent interested in the religious aspects
of the story.
Its just amazing to sit in
an amphitheatre with 2,500
people and watch 200 people
be choreographed on a fiveacre set. Where else are you
going to see that? he asked.
Its like climbing a mountain.
It gives this perspective that
you couldnt have gotten any
other way.
On the other hand, If you
want to come because you
want to have a fresh take
within the context of your
personal relationship with
Jesus, thats a great reason
(too), he said.
Were not just telling a
Christian story for Christians,
he said. Were just trying to
tell a story the best we can.

Council amends Land Use Bylaw for RV

and mini-storage site

The absence of an area structure
plan and conceptual scheme for lands
annexed in 2010 had council amend
the Land Use Bylaw by introducing a
district overlay to accommodate the issuance of a development permit for an
RV and mini storage area an action
accompanied with a degree of limitations keeping future development in
the forefront.
While the Municipal Development
Plan (MDP) foresees lands located between Wildflower Road to the east and
the town boundary to the west undergoing development for highway commercial development, the reclassification of a 4.2- acre property located at
the corner of HWY 1 and Range Road
254 currently lacks consistency with
the MDP.
The plan clearly communicates that
no reclassification or development
to the annexed lands take place until
the creation of an Area Structure Plan
(ASP) or the adoption of a Conceptual
Scheme. Therefore, designating lands
for highway commercial development,
which the applicant had requested, is
posing a concern. However, administration was in support of reclassifying the land, which is currently zoned
Agriculture General District, if certain
requirements and a permit with a fiveyear expiry date be considered under
a proposed Overlay District supplementing or modifying the arrangements of the parent district.
I can see this being there for 10
or 15 years, but you never know we
could have someone buy those quarter
sections and decide that theyre going
to do something major, said Werner
Fischer, director of planning and development for the Town of Strathmore.
The overlay, as proposed, allows us to
deal with pertinent issues, and allows
the development to proceed. [It] also
proposes that all of those uses will be
discretionary uses rather than permitted uses.
This allows us to do two things. It
gives us a little more flexibility in adding relevant conditions to the developing permit. It also enables us to issue
a development permit for a limited period of time.
Administration proposed eight considerations for councils rumination on
June 17. Such considerations included:
the RV and mini-storage proposal shall
not require water or sewer services;
will be used for discretionary uses
such as mini or self storage, outdoor
storage, signs, and accessory buildings
and uses; may be considered a temporary or transitional use until services
are available; and if future subdivision is proposed, then off-site levies,
boundary conditions, reserves and related matters will be considered.

would be subject to a time limit of five

years, after which a review will be conducted to re-issue the permit for the
same or alternate time period with or
without conditions.
During the regular council meeting, some councillors were concerned
about the aesthetics of the proposed
development as well as oil and gasoline leaks.
My only concern is that it is along
the highway and it is so high profile,
said Councillor Denise Peterson. I just
think that adding to the stellar view
coming in from Strathmore in the west
would be good, so doing something
different would be useful. And this
looks good.
Staff did acknowledge the issue, and
will ensure that the site will be developed in an attractive manner. A 6.4 metre area on the front of the property line
will be landscaped, while the trees at
the west end will be maintained. Placing the RVs in front of the mini-storage,
or sea cans, was also proposed.
Fischer also commented on the two
most common problems: rodents and
spills. However, he mentioned it is addressed when the development permit
is issued and the details hashed out.
With the absence of Councillor Steve
Grajczyk, who left due to a conflict of
interest, Councillor Rocky Blokland,
and Councillor Bob Sobol, town council approved second and third reading
for the Land Use Bylaw amendment.

Fotos Forward hoping to gift more memories

When Wayne Stadler started the Pay it Forward project
three years ago, the aim was to provide people with beautiful professional photos without the cost attached.
His goal was to offer the service for people who couldnt
otherwise afford it.
It was kind of getting to the point where it was almost
addicting to make people that happy, said Stadler.

I thought if I could do that for a few days at

a festival, why cant I do that for people that actually may have something to celebrate but cant
afford do it.
The idea stemmed from the Burning Man festival, which takes place in Nevada in late summer
every year, but Stadler was unable to attend in
2012.
But it was thereafter at Black Rock City that he
learned the 10 ethics about Burning Man and one
of the principles that piqued his interest in this
project was gifting.
I didnt want to be a tourist my first time there,
so I started thinking of something I could gift to
my fellow burners, said Stadler.
I eventually settled on a gift of photography.
Stadler is going off the word of mouth to get
more business out about the project and will only
stop in a town once.
He scheduled himself into Strathmore a couple
of weeks but unfortunately did not get any inter-
est, but hopes maybe if he gets promoted in the

area that he will get a better turnout.
I might add it back to the list possibly in September or sooner if I happen to get bunch of interest, said Stadler.
The business is accompanied by many struggles
in regards to promotion, and Stadler is planning
on focusing more on his photography, while keeping the project as a side job until he can gain more
traction.
I do a lot of abandoned fine arts stuff like old
fields, cars, barns and that sorts of stuff, he said.
This was going to be a side project that I could
do two or three days a week, a different town every week, and take it along with me but because
the crowd funding thing isnt going so well, Im
holding off and saving more money and kind of
go out and do my art, Ill do this as opportunities
arise.

The Strathmore Youth Club is looking forward to another great summer
with youth around town.
There will be a summer camp that
will be taking place where an activity
will be going on every day of the week
except for weekends.
On Mondays, the kids will go to the
splash park: Tuesdays they will make
an afternoon trip to the Jumphouse
gymnastics, while on Wednesdays the
kids will go swimming. Thursdays will
be a big field trip to Calgary and sur-

interact with each other.
The summer camps will
have some short weeks that
will cost $80, and $100 for
non-members.
For a full week it will be

will include covering the
cost for the activities on that
certain day and transportation.
Summer Camp will begin
on June 29 and run from 9

East Wheatland applies for Kraft Project Play

The communities of Gleichen, Cluny,
Hussar, Rockyford and Standard have
teamed up to form a bid in hopes of
winning a grant worth thousands of
dollars.
Kraft Project Play is a grant to help
build a better future by building better
places for any athlete. The grand prize
community winner will get $250,000
while three runner ups will get $25,000

towards the recreational complex of
their choice.
The combined bid, spearheaded by
Kathryn Stewart-Brown, who took the
initiative to submit an application for the
communities to try to win the money,
will provide the East Wheatland Committee with funds for the new schools
gym upgrade.

The village of Standard experienced a
surge of phone calls from residents last
week, after severe demands for water
placed extreme pressures on the water
treatment plant and plunged the 380
resident-strong village in an already
month-long water-ban.
Standard issued the water ban on
June 9, after the high demand resulted in water leaving the reservoir faster
than could be replenished from the irrigation canal. At the peak of consumption 1000 litres per minute left the reservoir while only 700 litres per minute
were produced. The high temperatures
also warmed the water creating problems with Algae and causing difficulty
in treating the water. With stresses on
the system, Standard residents were
forced to conserve their water and adhere to the ban dropping consumption to 150 to 200 litres per minute.
Once we put that water ban on, the
consumption dropped dramatically,
said Leah Jensen, CAO for the village
of Standard.
Were still trying to play catch-up in
filling our reservoir and we were also
running into some technical difficulties
with our water plant, that we are still

currently dealing with.
While Jensen added that residents
understood the predicament for the
most part, she noticed an increase in
phone calls being placed to the village
last week. With extreme temperatures,
water usage spiked, once again forcing
the village to play catch-up.
There were some places that were
watering 24 hours in the heat of the day,
and the demand was just astronomical,
Jensen said. The more people do not
comply with the water ban, the longer
the ban will be on, and the longer it
takes us to deal with the issues.
Standard residents are asked to refrain from any outdoor watering, conserve as much water as possible, and
be smart with their water-use. This
includes watering of grass, trees, and
filling pools and hot-tubs. The ban also
includes bulk water, while people who
require bulk water for consumption
will continue be able to purchase it. In
concurrence, Standard also issued a fire
ban for the area.
The water ban is currently still in effect and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Residents were warned that
the village will be forced into a complete water ban, if compliance is scant.

nomination part of it, Stewart-Brown

We are all on board, we want to see
it. Everybody wants to know when they
can vote, Im like you cant vote until
we make it to the finals.
She identified that with recreational
activities being popular in these towns,
that, they want to see the new East
Wheatland Schools gym accommodate
more than just a single class at a time
and be able to host an event on the bigger stage, such as provincial volleyball
and basketball tournaments.

We want to get that back for the kids
and having this gym be larger. We have
the opportunity to host provincials and
have intramurals with all the communities to have the ability to have a partake
in whether its adult volleyball or stuff
we currently dont have.
She outlined specifically the square
footage that they had to work with in
the gym where they will use the money.
The money would go towards the
gyms retractable bleachers and the
special flooring to support them, while
the funds will also go towards a proper
score clock, backboards, and athletes
seating.
The total cost of the gym is $500,000,
and the possible winnings could cover
half the costs.
The East Wheatland Committee has
raised $180,000, and $111,000 of that is
dedicated to the gym.
The finalists will be announced on
July 26.

The 22nd Canadian Rockies International Rodeo, locally known as the gay rodeo, returned to Strathmore
and it was bigger and better than ever.
Many tents and trailers pulled up into the ag grounds
for the weekend-long event that featured costumes, a
different spin on rodeo events, and this year saw the
likes of prominent musicians LeAnn Rimes and George
Canyon hit the stage.
Jason Baker, President of the Alberta Rockies Gay
Rodeo Association (ARGRA) previously discussed the
groups intentions of creating an even more exciting
event. While the event celebrates gender equality,
some of the money raised will also be donated back
into charities of the organizations choosing.
We do the best we can do so that we can help charities and so we can have another rodeo next year, said
Baker.
Ninety-two registered contestants competed in calf
roping, barrel racing, bull riding and pole bending, as
well as some unconventional events including steer

decorating, wild drag, and goat dressing. Baker attributes much of the success to the contestants that, he
said, have created a rodeo family that contributed to
the success by setting up the events.
Coming out to the event were people from across
Canada, the United States and as far away as Australia.
Many of the horses also came from the United States,
while the cattle were made available by cattle producer Doug Richardson, who has supplied the cattle for
the past 22 years.
Although the rodeo is the main component of the
event, it was the music performances that had everyone eagerly anticipating this year.
With two stages for the music acts, visitors were sure
to be entertained throughout the day.
The first stage was located by the grandstand and
allowed for up-and-coming bands to showcase themselves during the day.
Farther away on the ag grounds, the star-studded
lineup performed later in the evening. While some acts
were made up from country royalty Tim Hicks, LeAnn
Rimes and Kira Isabella, others came out for the catchy
tunes from the Village People or the performances of
popular Calgary drag queens Carlys Angels.
Patrons were also privy to a midway lined with food
trucks, including the Peanut Butter Cupboard and Beef
Wings. The Rosebud Theatre and Kits Ranch also had
their representatives stationed on the grounds.
Following the events, the Tornado Nightclub, a new
addition, invited spectators from the concerts to continue the party.
Despite all the planning and support from the celebrities, local businesses, and local law enforcement
and fire services, the attendance was not what ARGRA
was hoping for. Although close to 5,000 people were
expected, the rodeo only had about 1,000 people in
the grandstands. While this is a record breaker for this
rodeo, with attendance this year the largest in approximately eight years, more people from the town were
expected to show support.
This is the third year in their three-year contract with
Strathmore and they are already planning what to do
next.

The six Strathmore Venom lacrosse
teams that participated in the annual
Canada Day tournament in Calgary
all played hard and really enjoyed the
hype around the biggest event of their
lacrosse season.
Strathmore Lacrosse President, Chris
Iversen, has nothing but great things to
say about his teams work ethic in such
a massive tournament with many unfamiliar foes.
Our bantam B is doing really well,
theyre probably going to make the
playoffs, said Iversen.

been playing well, they didnt get the

tough, especially with several teams at
the tournament being tiered at a certain
level that gave the Venom teams different attacks to work against.
I think our kids, they play up to that
level and it makes for a more entertaining game. I think they have more fun at
it, he said.
The Strathmore teams looked forward to the different competition, as
they do not see many of them in the
regular season.
The style of play is different, depending on where they play too, said
Iversen.
A lot of the American teams come
from a big field background and field
players are amazing stick handlers. But
not so much in the corners, guys that
play box like to play a physical game in
the corners, they like to beat them up
a little bit.

The CFR Chemicals Bisons have named Adam
Redmond their new head coach starting this upcoming season.
Redmond, who recently coached the Calgary
Buffaloes midget triple-A program for five seasons, has a distinctive coaching background as
he had stints as head coach of the Calgary Bronks
bantam triple-A team, where he won the Coach of
the Year award, and prior to that was an assistant
coach with the AJHLs Olds Grizzlys.
The decision to come to a quality organization
like Bisons was a good fit for him and his family.
I wanted to be a part of a good organization,
said Redmond.
The Buffs treated me really well. I think it was
time for a change on both sides, Id been there
for five years as their major midget coach, prior
to my fifth season of taking it over, they had told
me it would be my last year.
The change could not have come at a better
time, as he wants a program where there is a
more team-oriented approach.
Just the type of kids they have there, its the
attitude and that is more focused on individual
success, said Redmond.
Im looking to be somewhere where I can create a program based on team and teamwork and
that kind of atmosphere. It was something we
had at UNB, it was not the success of individuals,
it was team success and thats what really creates
it.
The former Fort McMurray Oil Baron all-time
leading goal scorer and the University of New
Brunswick Reds standout is hoping to take his
occupation as an on-ice development instructor at SKILLZ in Calgary and transform his tech-

niques into the players success.

I feel thats one of my strong points as well,
systems and stuff, said Redmond.
Thats something that can definitely help in
games and help people succeed.
He will be relying on the players who will be
coming back from the Telus Cup run to lead the
team by example with their work ethics and communicate with the younger players to pick up
their pace.
Number one on Redmonds offseason list will
be to solidify his coaching staff and come up with
a game plan that will lead to success.
Bison General Manger Wayne Hansen saw Redmond as the worthy candidate because of how he
can help players have great careers.
Were here to develop kids to not just move
on to be junior players but to be very good junior
players and with Adam I think we have that, said
Hansen.
Hes developed many (players that have gone
on to have) successful careers and drafted into
the NHL.
Hansen added that being an experienced coach
in a difficult league helped in the process of hiring Redmond.
The Bisons are currently looking to fill the vacant announcing position while more game-day
volunteers are needed to help out.

Family and Friends are deeply saddened by the loss

of Heather (Fawkes) Cockx on June 25, 2015 after
a courageous battle with leukemia. She was an
exceptional woman, treasured wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Heather Louise was born
February 27, 1948 in Calgary, AB to parents William
and Yvonne Fawkes. She spent her childhood growing up in Namaka until Grade 2 at which time the
family moved to Strathmore, AB. On May 3, 1969,
Heather married her high school sweetheart, Dale
Cockx from Strathmore. They bought a section
of land south of Strathmore, and this became their
paradise. Heather was a passionate gardener and
enjoyed the countless hours beautifying their yard.
She is lovingly remembered for her genuine smile
and warm hospitable manner that she shared with
everyone she met. Always the go to person
she was our pillar of strength. Her pride and joy
was the PACK, her four beautiful grandchildren;
Parker, Aidan, Connor and Karson, who she adored
and loved deeply. They learned so much about
kindness and the goodness of human spirit from
their Grandma Heather. Heather is recently predeceased by her mother, Yvonne and father, William
(Bill). She is survived by her devoted husband of
46 years, Dale; her two sons, Darren (Krista) and
Scott (Renae); 4 grandsons, Parker, Aidan, Connor,
Karson; her sister Monica (Mike) Monner from Milo;
and many friends and family. Our sincere appreciation and gratitude is extended to all the caring
physicians, nurses and staff at the Peter Lougheed
Hospital and Tom Baker Cancer Center. A special
thank you to Dr. Lategan and Dr. Geddes, all the
nurses in the Treatment room especially Noreen
and Susan who compassionately oversaw her care
for the last 10 years. Heather and her family thank
everyone for their thoughts, prayers and friendship
over the many years. You were very dear to her
and we thank you for being a part of her life. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 2,
2015 at the Carseland Community Hall at 2pm. In
lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation directly
to the Cheadle Lions Club Hospice Fund (Box 22

The Strathmore Spurs U12B soccer
team is feeling good about themselves
these days, as they are 7-0 on the season after thrashing West Hills United of
Calgary 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at the
Ranch.
Head Coach Mark Shorhen has seen a
real bond amongst the players and has
noticed it in the older players helping
out the inexperienced ones.
The guys have really come out of
their shells, theyre really getting into
the play more, said Shorhen.
The older guys have played really
well with them, getting them involved
in the plays.
His focus as a coach for the group is
to pick out flaws on the field and make
sure the players correct their mistakes

and work through them for the next
time that they are on the pitch.
Thats always how Ive coached and
they seem to listen, said Shorhen.
The new ones, the first couple of
games, are kind of scared, until I explain to them that Im a very loud coach.
If they dont hear my voice, theyll understand their doing something good.
Aside from being the U12 Bs coach,
he is also the president of Strathmore
Soccer and said the other teams had
great years.
Theyve all played pretty well, weve
tiered them properly where theyve
needed to be, said Shorhen
The association could use some more
volunteers for next season, and could
use more experience at the coaching
position.
It is with great sadness that we share

the news of the death of our beloved
husband, father, grandfather and friend Kim Rumohr. Kim was born in Calgary and grew up there
before moving to Qualicum Beach on beautiful
Vancouver Island with his family. He spent a brief
time in Vancouver before heading back to Alberta
to run the family farm on the hill near Standard.
Kim enjoyed his life on the farm and was also able
to enjoy his other passion of cars and car racing.
Kim always lived his life to the fullest on his own
terms and enjoyed every moment. Kim was predeceased by his father Hugh and his mother Elaine
both of whom he loved dearly. He is survived by
his wife Gina, his son Kji (Dianne), granddaughter
Kaitlyn and his sister Erin (Stephen) and her family.
At Kims request there will not be a funeral but if
friends wish they may make a donation directly to
