CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS OF DELHI, AGRA AND BHARATPUR

This list covers the triangle enclosed by Delhi, Agra and Bharatpur and
the neighbouring areas of about 30 kilometres on all sides. The Jumna River
runs southwards from Delhi to Agra about a hundred and sixty kilometres
away, with Bharatpur 50 1cm west of Agra. The area lies in the centre of
the Indo-Gangetic plain in northern India. It contains no mountains, but a
large variety of biotopes is provided depending largely on the amount of
water available the' wide sandy banks of the river, the huge jheels at Bharatpur and elsewhere, the semi-desert, areas immediately adjacent to the river,
the hills and ridges usually arid and covered with scrub vegetation and the

odd ruins of by-gone civilisations, together with the increasing cultivated

areas which provide food and shelter to migrant forms and to such residents
as can survive the ploughing, the reaping and the insecticides.
and subspecies occurring in the vast
and kaleidoscopic regions of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Shri Lanka
will seldom
is over 2000, while those found in any restricted area or district
be more than a fifth or a quarter of the whole number. Overall avifaunas
being many-volumed and regional books rare and incomplete, a list of birds
already recorded in any given area reduces the number of possibilities and
helps the observer both to identify and to estimate the authenticity and value
moveof his own observations. Details of distribution, particularly seasonal

Delhi being our capital, an exceptionally large number of foreigners live

there, while many tourists visit the Taj Mahal at Agra and the Bird Sanctuary at Bharatpur. Many of them are more interested in natural history
than the average Indian, and for this reason a greater stream of persons looking at birds has passed through this area than perhaps through any other in
India. The main trend has been photography and birdwatching, and within
recent years relatively little collecting has been done. Many of the records

are based on birds seen and, though some of them are by persons with long
experience and high competence, the element of doubt must always remain.
After the first draft, of this list was completed, we learnt of the publication
(1975) of the late Mrs. Usha Ganguli's "A Guide to the Birds of the Delhi
Area" with the foreword dated 1971. This contains a large number of sight
records to which these remarks very pertinently apply. The presence 6f the

cumstances being sent there and preserved. These specimens are invaluable,
for the first identification made without suitable literature and comparable
material is occasionally found to be erroneous and only a specimen will permit correction by a later worker.
sight record once published is difficult,
if not impossible, to correct.
The National Museum of Natural History,
FICCI Museum Building, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi 110 001 (Tel:
387073) have started a museum-cum-collection and will no doubt be glad to
receive and identify any specimen which may be sent to them.

The

This has now been attempted on the basis of other literature

and/or the material available in Bombay. In some instances, e.g. the Shikra
and the Little Ringed Plover, there is a resident and a migrant race (or races)
of the same species.
No specimens have been examined, but both races are
included on the basis of field notes referring to breeding and migration. In
several instances the absence of a specimen makes it impossible to determine
the subspecific identity and this is left with a query.
In others the sight
record of species not very easily identified adds appreciably to the known
distributionj Such records as, in our opinion, are erroneous or need confirmation are placed in brackets. It is hoped that' some organised collecting will
be arranged and some of the relatively simple questions will be answered
soon. We draw attention to the considerable confusion in the Wild Animals
(Protection) Act 1972 which makes the intelligent collaboration of the amateur almost impossible, and express hope that suitable amendments of the
Act will soon be made.

The present fist covers 460 (including 44

Bharatpur for several years, and the other has made several short visits to
both places, neither has had the opportunity of living continuously in that
area and making notes on movements etc.

In the list, the different species/subspecies are serially numbered and
