2. Why do you think children will find these genres interesting?


There are several reasons why children will find picture, fiction and non-fiction books
interesting. Each genre consists of strong points that appeal to childrens interests and
needs. First off, picture books are a perfect source for stimulating childrens brain
development. During early childhood, the brain needs the verbal and visual nature of
picture book storytelling to build neurological pathways which in turn develop their
rational and logical thinking skills. Thus, children naturally enjoy storytelling using picture
books due to the verbal and visual clues provided. Moreover, children adore fiction books
because it is able to hold their relatively short attention span. Fiction books usually
contain plots which are suspense-worthy and thrilling, keeping children on the edge of
their seats. Hence, this type of story book will be able to gain the attention of children
during an English lesson. Furthermore, non-fiction books provide strong and solid

informational knowledge base for children in their secondary and tertiary education. As
they develop their thinking skills, children enjoy reading about historical people and
events which will help them understand the world better. Thus, children need an ongoing
diet of non-fiction reading material and all throughout their schooling years.

4. Why is it important for children to explore these genres?


Children need to do extensive reading out of the classroom so that they can develop
the reading habit individually. By exploring these genres, children have a wider
selection of book sources to choose from, encouraging them to read more. Besides,
these genres represent a varied choice of literary works that can appeal to children
with different interests. For example, a child who enjoys fictitious characters with
magical powers can begin reading the Harry Potter book series, which belongs in the
fiction category. On the other hand, a child who is older can try to read biographies
from the non-fiction category, as they try to understand events that have actually
happened in the past.
5. How do the genres help to support learning English?
Picture books allow children to be exposed to repeated phrases, strengthening their
knowledge on the target language. For example, in the picture book Chicken
Licken, there are numerous phrases that children can repeat aloud with their
teacher. This creates an environment that is conducive for language learning,
complete with guidance in proper enunciation and stress. All in all, different genres
do help boost childrens literacy as long as they are interested in the books.
