NTU Partners NOL to Launch Scholarship for Graduate Programme in Maritime
Studies
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has received US$300,000 in endowment funds
to establish a first-ever scholarship for the Master of Science (Maritime Studies)
programme. The amount comprises US$150,000 from Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and
dollar-for-dollar matching by the Singapore Government.
NOL bequeaths this scholarship in memory of its founding Managing Director, Captain
Muhammad Jalaluddin Sayeed, who made pioneering contribution to Singapores
maritime industry in the 1960s.
Known for being a visionary, Captain M J Sayeed first crafted a proposal outlining plans
for a Singapore national shipping line in 1968. His entrepreneurial and industrious spirit
saw Captain Sayeed giving up his career in Pakistan to accept the position of founding
Managing Director of Singapores first shipping line. With 29 years of maritime
experience under his belt, Captain Sayeed was a source of inspiration and an invaluable
trove of knowledge to the young and inexperienced pioneering team at NOL back in
1968. Since then, NOL has grown into a US$7 billion global transportation and logistics
company engaged in shipping and related businesses, providing world-class integrated
end-to-end logistics services and supply chain solutions.
NTUs Master of Science (Maritime Studies) programme is an ideal fit with NOLs spirit
of contribution as the programme aims to produce top-notch talents poised to play
leading roles in Singapores drive to be an internationally-renowned maritime hub. The
programme is jointly conducted with the BI Norwegian School of Management, a leading
business school in Europe.
The NOL Captain M J Sayeed Scholarship will be offered every year to an outstanding
international or local student of the programme. For its inaugural year, two scholarships
will be offered when the course commences in August 2006; one to a Singaporean and
the other to a Pakistani student.
Mr Cedric Foo, NOL Group Deputy President and President for Asia and Middle East
says, NOL is honoured to establish the NOL-Capt MJ Sayeed Scholarship in honour of
our first MD, to recognize his contribution to the NOL Group, to the maritime industry,
and to Singapore. We hope that the pioneering spirit of Capt Sayeed will inspire many
generations of young people, from Singapore and overseas, to pursue a career in global
transportation and logistics.
Adds Prof Pan Tso-Chien, Dean of NTUs School of Civil and Environmental
Engineering, This scholarship, together with NTUs strengths in maritime studies, will
help attract even more top talents to this programme. This will significantly contribute to
Singapores drive up the value chain as an International Maritime Centre.
