Swahili Kingereza Begginers
Swahili Kingereza Begginers
Swahili Kingereza Begginers
Beginner Level
Description
This course is intended for students with little or no knowledge of Kiswahili. The course begins with basic
lessons such as greetings and finishes up with lessons of self expression in everyday life e.g. at grocery
stores, at bank, at post office, making telephone calls etc.
The major goals are to enable students to develop communicative skills in Swahili through listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. At the end of the course the student will be able to use a set of
communication tools to comprehend and speak about a set of social situations. The student will be able to
communicate and discuss basic personal history, leisure time activities, work situations and use Swahili for
day to day activities such as visiting the market. Essential skills such as asking and answering simple
questions will be mastered.
Topics covered include:
o The alphabet and sound patterns
o Conversation structures
o Greetings and social codes in conversations
o Noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, etc.;
o Sentence structure
o Voice: active and passive, causative, reflexives
Teaching Method
Teaching methods are based on the Community Based Contact model (also referred to as the Experimental
Learning Model). The focus is placed on learning Swahili through practice and experience. Lessons are
divided into four parts: communication, grammar, practice and cultural context. Levels of proficiency are
treated as a continuum rather than as distinct stages. Students are evaluated at the start of the program,
placed into the appropriate lesson and advance as their proficiency improves. Each lesson is complimented
with out-of-class experiences such as going to the market, bank, cafs, using public transportation, etc.
Academic Credit
The Swahili Language course is 60 contact hours and awarded 3 semester credits. Language courses are
taught by qualified instructors from KiSwahili na Utamaduni (KIU). Transcripts are issued by Lincoln
University and University at Albany (for SUNY students only). Both Lincoln University and SUNY
Albany are accredited in the USA.
Class Materials
Swahili Book for Beginners, authored and published by KIU. The book has 79 lesson components which
build skills in speaking, listening, writing and reading. Each lesson component is supported by exercises,
drills and appropriate vocabulary. The book is complimented by an audio CD. The text book is supported
by a range of contemporary classroom scenarios which use role play to practice the real situations the
students will encounter.
Assessment
The final grade for the course is based on the following:
Participation in class:

Continuous assessment (quizzes, assignments, etc.) 40%
