A Critical Analysis of Arguments

The analysis on fallacies in an argument based on the article with the title
Homework should be banned. The article describes a persons view on the opinion of
certain parents and union to ban all homework for primary and secondary students.
The first fallacy that the writer committed is an Ad Populum. It is based on the writer
issued in a statement If homework is just solid reading, writing and arithmetic and not
about creative skills like drawing a picture of the family, it will create difficulties.

This

claim is made by the writer based on most people believe that homework just about
reading, writing and arithmetic and not about creative skills. Thus it will make difficult for
the student to complete their tasks. There is no source and evidence to support his
claim. Therefore it just a fallacy made by the writer.
The second fallacy that was also stated is Appeal to Ignorance. The writer mention
that Homework made childrens frustration and exhaustion, lack of time for other
activities and family time and, sadly for many, loss of interest in learning.

The

statement made by the writer believed to be true because nobody failed to said
otherwise even without concrete evidence that homework made children exhausted and
frustrated. Thus, the writer need to supply more evidence in order to make readers
believe.
Thirdly, fallacy is Appeal to Authority. The writer mentioned in statement made by the
doctor saying that children need 6 7 hours a day of fresh air and sunshine. Then the
writer concludes it by saying because homework might damage their health.

The

person who cited the conclusion doesnt have any authority relating to homework and
not suitable to write the statement. He doesnt have any authority relating to this issue
and the writer not provide any to support his claims.
Fourth fallacy that writer stated is a Slippery Slope. The writer mentioned that If they
are given more work in the evening it is going to tire them out and they wont be able to
do other things.

This chain reaction the writer states is because of homework, they

will lost interest in learning. Furthermore, he admits that homework will tired student

and will get them exhausted thus wont be able to do other things.

These

consequences are stated without providing any evidence.

No sources attached and no strong proof makes this statement fallacious and is
questionable by readers. Therefore, this statement is just a fallacious statement made
by the writer. The statement is also unclear since there is no specific evidence is
mentioned.
Fifth fallacy that the writer used is a Begging the Question. The writer stated that
Homework is putting too much pressure on students and their parents. Then the writer
concludes the statement by saying that homework should be banned. Here the writer
wants the reader to accept the conclusion without providing any real evidence to
support his claim. Thus, it just a fallacy made by the writer.
Last but not least, the other fallacy shows in this article is a Hasty Generalization. This
based on the writer stated in the article that one homework assignment each week,
which usually work on the night before it is due. When this becomes a daily duty, it will
be at the same level of hair-pulling frustration as many other parents. This statement is
just made by Caitlin Moran statement and assumes all other parents in the nation feel
just like that. The writer not provide any real evidence in order to support his claim and
just based on the feeling of one parents and thinks other will feel the same.
To conclude, the writer has not prove and shown enough evidence to support his
argument about the issue. It really not convincing for the readers when read this article
because he try to persuade the readers without providing any convincing evidence and
his reasoning is flawed. The writer needs to make some research before he can write
statement about this issue.
