Case Study involving Reasoning in
Argumentation

”Does a college or University Have the Right or Responsibility to Censor the Arts?”

Steve: I can't believe the college is thinking about banning the Laramie Project. We are
adults and this is a college. We should be able to see and hear what we want, when we
want. This play addresses important social issues that should be discussed on our
campus. It should not be banned just because it makes some people in the community
uncomfortable.

Juli: Our rights to see this play or have a controversial art exhibition are not more important
than someone else's rights-even when it comes to free speech. People have
threatened to protest play and our campus police are worried about violence and
vandalism. We have no right to put others at risk and if a protest turns ugly, that's what
could happen. If our freedoms potentially hurt others, they should be limited. Ironically,
this play makes that point. We limit hate speech-we don't allow people to say what they
want because it may have harmful consequences. Artistic work is like any other form of
speech; it should have limits if it hurts others. Artistic expression should not be
exempted from censorship any more than any other kind of speech.

Conclusion
In conclusion, critical thinking helps you make
logical and more successful decisions, as well
as boosting your self confidence. Also,
Communication is very helpful it decreases
the chance of an argument happening and it
makes you understand others and their way of
thinking. Lastly, following the key concepts in
reasoning we have mentioned before is one of
the main point to have a successful argument.
