ANNOUNCEMENTS

omeless men living under

Flushing Meadow
Bridges need clothing
For a number of years now and
thanks to the generosity of our
parishioners; every Sunday
morning during the winter
months, we bring hot chocolate, a sandwich and some
warm clothes to a group of
homeless men living under the
bridges and surrounding areas
of Flushing Meadows Corona
Park. These are men who for
different reasons have given up
on life and seen unable to cope
with it. As the cold weather
approaches, once again we are
preparing to start our mission
and we need clothing. If you
have warm clothes and blankets that are clean and in good
condition and would like to
donate them please call us and
we will pick them up. For more
information call Jorge at (718)
224-8187 or (718) 423-5988.

Annual Coat Drive

e have been off to a

slow but steady start to
our seventh coat drive. St. Anastasia School did their own
drive which was very successful; in fact they were able to
collect more coats this year
than last year. Thank you St.
Anastasia children for your
great effort. My self and my
associate, Patti Rifino saw
firsthand this past week what
this economy has been doing to
our already poor sister parish,
St. Margaret Mary in Long
Island City. We dropped off
bags of gently used clothing as
well as coats and were able to
see how the clothes are sorted
and distributed. They have
volunteers sorting as the people
were waiting outside the door
to come and pick out what they
need, as well as some food
from the parish food pantry.
Since there is such a need, I am

going to continue to collect

coats and clothes at my office
year round and make distributions to St. Margarets as well
as St. Fidelis in College Point
and the early Head Start program for VNS in Rockaway.
Please drop off your gently
used clothing and coats at my
office: Bryce Rea 250-02
Northern Blvd. 9AM5PM
and if that is not possible give
me a call and I will come by
and pick up your items. My
number is: (917) 796-2990.
Again, Patti and I thank you
and I know if the places we
visit could speak to you personally they would say the
same.

Good News from the School Principal

Let it (not) snow...
By Lucy Mihulka, Principal

A reminder for the snowy days

ahead Please listen to 880
WCBS AM, 1010 WINS AM
and 710 WOR AM. If the public schools are closed, we are
closed. If they are not closed, a
decision will be made by the
area Principals by 6:30AM. If
we decide to close, the emergency phone chain will be activated and the message on the
school answering machine will
state that school is closed.
Bishop DiMarzio has mandated
a uniform registration and reregistration timeline throughout
the entire Diocese of Brooklyn
for the 2009-2010 school year.
This uniform timeline will promote a true sense of communion among all of our elementary
schools, allow parents to regis-

The Breach

Movie Club is offered to adults only. We are selecting movies that

are interesting, inspiring, sometimes forgotten, thought-provoking
and artistically significant. We use the Youth Center, which is
equipped with AC, comfy couches, decent stereo sound and bigsize projection screen. Snacks, wine and soda are served.

In February, 2001, Robert Hanssen, a senior

agent with 25 years in the FBI, is arrested for
spying. Jump back two months: Eric O'Neill, a
computer specialist who wants to be made an
agent is assigned to clerk for Hanssen and to
write down everything Hanssen does. O'Neill's
told it's an investigation of Hanssen's sexual habits. Within weeks, the crusty Hanssen, a devout
Catholic, has warmed to O'Neill, who grows to
respect Hanssen. O'Neill's wife resents
Hanssen's intrusiveness; the personal and professional stakes get higher. How they catch
Hanssen and why he spies become the film's
story. Can O'Neill help catch red-handed "the
worst spy in history" and hold onto his personal
life? (IMdb)

BOY SCOUTS

After the December 2008 lock-in retreat, the St. Anastasia Youth Group
has found a new identity and new vigor
in experiencing its life and faith. Not
only we see good and steady numbers
of participants (16-34 a meeting), but
also we have come closer as a group
and matured as a small community.
We have welcomed 2009 with new excitement and fresh ideas. Besides having another lock-in and camping trip in
the Spring, the group will undertake a
few opportunities to reach out to the
wider St. Anastasia community on a
few occasions. Currently, we are working on the details, which we will provide as soon as they are ready.

Boy Scouts News

Cub Scout Pack 153 is pleased to present the now classic film Chicken Run (G
-rated) for family enjoyment. Fundraiser proceeds support the outdoor activities of the Cub Pack, and your attendance is appreciated. Families are admitted for a charge of $5 (per family). It will take place on Saturday evening,
January 24th, at 6 PM, in Father Smith Hall. Refreshments will be available
for sale at reasonable prices. This is a great evening for grandparents to come
enjoy a delightful film with the kids! All the young at heart are invited!
The menu (you won't go home hungry):
All Beef Hot Dog, $1.50
Chips with melted cheese, $1.25
Large cup of Popcorn, $1.00
Juice box, 75 cents
All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The parish sponsors Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Joining information is available from the Scouting representative, Tom McGlinchey, (718) 224-9634. The
Cub Scouts are looking for fine young men in the First and Second grades, in
particular, to join this exciting and fun program. We meet on Sunday evenings.

At our meeting on January 4, we decided to experiment a new feature at the

Youth Group. The regular monthly
movie nights are moved from Sundays
at 6 PM to a new time slot: 35 PM,
leaving the 6 PM meeting intact. The
new feature is called eXtreme Youth and
will be taking place when it will fit our
schedules. We will try it for the first
time on Sunday, January 18, the day
before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
which gives teenagers the time to do
their homework before Tuesday. We
hope to have some refreshments (pizza
or sandwiches) while watching a movie
and enjoying and spending the time
together in a safe and caring environment. Of course, the Youth Center will
be closed for the Eucharist between 5
6 PM.
If you are an 8-grader through high
school, you can join us at any time.
Find us at the Youth Center or online at
