Whole Numbers and Fractions

For example, if a pizza is cut into eight pieces and you ate three,
3
you ate     8 of the pizza.

To represent the whole pizza and acknowledge that it was cut

into eight, equal pieces, you could write

8
1 whole pizza  =          8

If you have one whole cake and sixteen people to share it with,
1
you will cut the cake so that each piece is     16  , or the cake is cut

into sixteen equal pieces.

16
                                   1 cake =  16

It’s as if we are dividing the numerator by the denominator. The
identity property states that anything multiplied or divided by
itself equals 1. Hence, an equal numerator and denominator will
equal 1.
Practice Writing your own
