The Reason Why Soda is Bad for

Us

Introduction
This mini research discuss about the many people who have consumed soda better
knowing its adverse effects or not. This research have a good influence for
our surroundings. But it have a bad impact too. The good of this
research is people will avoid soda because they are realize that soda
is bad for their healthy. And people will know what is the alternative
way to change soda with healthy drink. And also this research will
prove that coin will be melted or not because of soda. But the bad of
this research is turnover soda will drop. Many place like restaurant or
caf and canteen are sell the soda. So, if people wont drink soda
again,their salary will drop too.
Although soda have a zero sugar version,but it still bad as same
as soda regularly. Soda is contain a sugar that could make people
obesity and diabetes .. Soda is loaded with a sweetener that has been linked to
obesity. Soda consumption also has been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes,
both due to its sugar content and its effects on the body's hormoes.
Soda is also could make your teeth damages,because the sugar from soda coat
your teeth that combining with bacteria in your mouth to form acid. Both regular and
diet soda also contain carbolic acid through carbonation. These acids work to weaken
tooth enamel, causing cavities and tooth decay. Soda will weaken your bones
too,because soda contain phosphorus and caffeine.
Experts also worry that people consume soda in place of milk or other healthy
drinks, depriving the bones of calcium. And soda could harm your major organs
especially your kidney. Soda is totally useless because It's nothing but sugar water. It's
devoid of any nutritional value. It leads to obesity and diabetes. The side effects of
sucralose and other artificial sweeteners or ingredients that can lead to memory loss.
Many people drink soda at the fast food restaurant. Theyre not realize that soda
has a bad effect. Maybe the price of soda in the fast food restaurant is cheap. Actually
mineral water is a good drink for our health after we eat some food. Because it doesnt
make us obesity,diabetes,teeth damages,weak bone,and many more like soda does. All

people must be avoided from soda. I dont think it will be good if the children drink a
soda. Because nowdays many children are drink soda and theyre very happy with the
sweetness of soda. We must change soda with the healthy drink. Many alternatives drink
that make our body health. Its like water,fruit juice,infused water,milk,and tea.
Soda is totally useless because It's nothing but sugar water. It's devoid of any

Theoritical Framework
This theoretical framework shows the mind mapping of this research. People nowdays
arent know about the bad effect of soda. Eventhough they know,they dont understand
it. They need to know what is the alternatives way to avoid the soda. This theoretical
framework shows how the problem a rised, the purposed method and the main goal of
this research. The theoretical framework is shown in figure 1.

Research Purpose
I want to do a research about soda that cause many bad effect for our body. So the
contribution of my research for other people is:

Make other people realize how bad the soda is for their health.
Giving an alternatives way to avoid drink a soda
Giving more information about the fact of soda

Literature Review
Danish researchers discovered that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic
increases in fat buildup around your liver and your skeletal muscles, both of which can
contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes. The study revealed that people who drank a
regular soda every day for six months saw a 132 to 142 percent increase in liver fat, a
117 to 221 percent jump in skeletal fat, and about a 30 percent increase in both
triglyceride blood fats and other organ fat. Their consumption also led to an 11 percent
increase in cholesterol, compared with the people who drank other beverages such as
water or milk.
Even diet soda will pack on the pounds: Researchers from the University of
Texas Health Science Center monitored 475 adults for 10 years, and found that those
who drank diet soda had a 70 percent increase in waist circumference over the 10-year
study, compared with those who didn't drink any soda. Those who drank more than two
diet sodas per day saw a 500 percent waist expansion! A separate study the same
researchers conducted on mice suggested that it was the aspartame, which raised blood
glucose levels, that caused the weight gain; when your liver encounters too much
glucose, the excess is converted to body fat.
In 2011, the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned the
Food and Drug Administration to ban the artificial caramel coloring used to make Coke,
Pepsi, and other colas brown. The reason: Two contaminants in the coloring, 2methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole, have been found to cause cancer in animals, a
threat the group says is unnecessary, considering that the coloring is purely cosmetic.
According to California's strict Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer,
just 16 micrograms per person per day of 4-methylimidazole is enough to pose a cancer
threat, and most popular brown colas, both diet and regular, contain 200 micrograms per
20-ounce bottle.
Diet or regular, all colas contain phosphates, or phosphoric acid, a weak acid that
gives colas their tangy flavor and improves their shelf life. Although it exists in many
whole foods, such as meat, dairy, and nuts, too much phosphoric acid can lead to heart
and kidney problems, muscle loss, and osteoporosis, and one study suggests it could
trigger accelerated aging. The study, published in a 2010 issue of the FASEB Journal,
found that the excessive phosphate levels found in sodas caused lab rats to die a full five

weeks earlier than the rats whose diets had more normal phosphate levelsa disturbing
trend considering that soda manufacturers have been increasing the levels of phosphoric
acid in their products over the past few decades.
Researchers looked at peoples diet soda consumption between the years 2000
and 2002, and then screened them for type 2 diabetes between 2002 and 2007, as part of
the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, or MESA, an investigation involving more
than 6,800 people between 45 and 84 years old. People who drank at least one diet soda
a day at the beginning of the study had a 67 percent higher relative risk of type 2
diabetes compared with the people who drank none. Zero-calorie soda also increased the
risk of metabolic syndromea group of risk factors linked to obesity that increase your
chances of heart disease, diabetes, and strokeby 36 percent.
Take a look at the ingredients list for any soda and chances are most of those
ingredients are derived from corn. As much as 88 percent of the corn grown in the U.S.
is genetically modified to resist toxic pesticides or engineered to create pesticides within
the plant itself. Thanks to lax government safety regulations, and tight corporate control
over who gets to test these proprietary seeds, there are no human studies that can prove
or disprove whether these crops are safe. Independent scientists have found that, in
animals, genetically modified crops, or GMOs, are linked to digestive tract damage,
accelerated aging, and even infertility. Most recently, scientists in France found that rats
fed GMO corn for their entire two-year lifespan developed mammary tumors and died
earlier than rats that ate non-GMO corn their entire lives.
Ten Reasons to Avoid Soft Drink Consumption:

1.

single can of soda contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This amount
of sugar,especially in liquid form, skyrockets the blood sugar and causes an
insulin reaction in the body. Over time, this can lead to diabetes or insulin
resistance, not to mention weight gain and other health problems. Soft drink

companies are the largest user of sugar in the country.


2. Soda contains phosphoric acid, which interferes with the bodys ability to absorb
calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities and bone softening. Phosphoric
Acid also interacts with stomach acid, slowing digestion and blocking nutrient
absorption.
3. In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar, and can actually be

more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems
including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional
disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures and methanol breaks
down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of
metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised
cholesterol.
4. Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast
lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems.
5. The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like
chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.
6. Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The
study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than
those who didnt, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of
obesity increased 1.6 times.
7. Sodas contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, which obviously comes from corn.
Most of this corn has been genetically modified, and there are no long term
studies showing the safety of genetically modified crops, as genetic modification
of crops has only been around since the 1990s. Also, the process of making High
Fructose Corn Syrup involves traces of mercury, which causes a variety of long
term health problems.
8. There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there
many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to
outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.
9. Because of the high sugar, sodium and caffeine content in soda, it dehydrates the
body and over a long period of time can cause chronic dehydration.
10. Drinking soda regularly causes plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to
cavities and gum disease.

Method of Study
This research is using method qualitative . The participants that will support my
research is Kampus Manyar Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopembers student and public

health facultys student. Because they will answer my question and solve my research
about soda. And I will be the participant to my research,because I will do my
observation about soda and coin. The place where I want to do my research at home to
doing my observation about soda and coin and meet up with Public Health Faculty
Universitas Airlanggas student. And also at Kampus Manyar Institut Teknologi Sepuluh
Nopember to doing interview with 9 students. I want to do the coin and soda research
because I heard that coin would be melted in the soda. So with this research it will
reveal the truth of what happening with the coin if in the soda. And I want to
consultation with the public health faculty student because I want to know more about
the effect of soda with our body. I choose 9 student in Kampus Manyar ITS because
some student love the soda and they cant stop to avoid it. But some another students
are dont like the soda because they know the bad effect of it.

Result And Discussion

This interviews was contain with 10 respondents and take place on campus ITS Manyar
and my home to collect information for supporting this research. Ten respondent is from
five woman and five man from different age. But their average age is 18 years old. The
result of interview is presented in this chapter.

People Have to Drink The Soda

Soda is drink that sparkling and tasty. Soda is longstanding product. Both from children
to adults like soda. Besides being sweet, soda also has a different sensation of freshness.
people do not know how bad the effects of soda. They do not think twice to drink a
bottle of soda. And if they know the adverse effects of a bottle of soda, surely they will
reduce the consumption of drinking soda.

There arent people that never drink a soda. From the data people that ever to drink rhe
soda is 100% and people that never to drink soda is 0%. So the conclusion is all the
people had to try the soda,but it doesnt mean that they loved soda. Because soda is a
very commonly drink until now.

Soda could make people addicted with it. Because it contains caffeine like coffee and
cigarette. We must avoid the soda eventhough with the slow way but sure. Public
Health Faculty Student said that we can decrease our addicted to soda with drink a green
tea. Green tea will detox our body from the bad effect from soda.

From the data well see that from 10 respondents that addicted with soda is 50% and
dont like the soda is 30% and not really the soda is 20%. So the conclusion is many
people are addicted with soda. They first drink soda is the beginning their addicted. We
must to concern with ourself to avoid the soda. If people more find the fact that soda is
bad,they will control themselves to not drink soda again.

The Knowledge about Bad Effect from Soda

Soda is the useless drinks for our health. Many bad effect that soda has. Although soda
have a zero sugar version,but it still bad as same as soda regularly. Soda consumption

bad effect from soda. they understand that soda could damages the kidneys,soda has a
lot of sweeteners,could damages the intestines,and many more. And 3 people from 10
are just know the bad effect from soda. They dontknow bad effect from soda
spesifically. And the last 30% is the people that dont know about bad effect from soda.
So the conclusion is many people arent understand with the fact that soda is bad for our

health. Eventhough they know,they cant explain what the factor from soda that very
bad for our health.

How Many Times People Drink the Soda in 1 week

If there are people know and just know about the bad effect from soda, it doesnt mean
that all the people could stop to drink the soda. Because it depends from theirself to
control their wants to drink the soda. They must realize and more understand that soda
will damges our body system.

soda in a week. And another three people drink the soda once in a week. Two people are
drink soda two times in a week and another two people are drink soda three times in a
week. So the conclusion is there are still many people that addicted with soda. They still
drink the soda eventhough they know the fact from soda that bad for our health.

What Age People First Drink The Soda

Soda is very bad for our health better for adult and also child. Nowdays many children
are addicted with the soda. Because children love a sweet taste. And they dont know
what is the bad effect from soda if their parents dont tell them. Because oldes parents
arent know the bad effect from soda. Here is my research to prove that people nowdays
had to be drunk the soda in their childhood.

From the data well that from 10 respondents there are six people that drink the soda
since their 5-10 years old. And another four people are first drink the soda when they at
11-15 years old. So the conclusion is children are curious and addicted with the sweet
and the tasty feeling of the soda. If for adult soda has a bad effect however with the
child? It will damages their body system early.

Many pople are know th bad effect from soda but they dont know specifically. Because
of that,there are still many people cant stop or lower their consumption of the soda.
they must realize and believe that soda is really bad for their health.

From the data well see that from ten respondents there are 6 people that wants to stop
to drink soda if they know the knowledge about the bad effect from soda. And another
three people said dont want to stop drink soda. Because they are very addicted with the
soda. Eventhough they know about the knowledge about the bad effect from soda,they
wont stop to drink it.

Where is The Place That Theyre Usually Buy The Soda

People are drink the soda thats not just it sweet and tasty, but also it easy to get in
many place. In example junk Food reastaurant that sell the soda for their priority. It
makes mostly people in junk food restaurant have to buy the soda. So here is the
data that I took from 10 respondents about where they usually buy the soda.

From the well see that from ten respondent there are 2 people that usually buy the
soda in supermarket and another three people are usually buy the soda in junk food
restaurants. And just 1 people that usually buy the soda in the canteen. Another 4
people are usually buy the soda in the all places like supermarket,canteen, and also
junk food restaurants.

Consultation With Public Health Faculty Students

I choose consultation because I want more to know about the soda. The student from
Public Health Faculty of Universitas Airlangga is Elsya Vira Putri. Here is the
information that I get from her:
1. Shes agree if soda is bad for our healthy.

2. Shes agree if soda could damages kidney,weaken our bones,diabetes,obesity,and


damages the teeth.
3. She said that soda has a lot of fructose thats causes an obesity and diabetes.
4. Shes agree that soda could make people addicted with it because it contain
caffeine.
5. She give an alternatives way to avoid addicted feeling from soda. She suggest
green tea to be a good way to detox ang neutralization our body. So well stop to
addiction with the soda.
6. And she suggest juice,mineral water and infused water to change peoples habbit
to drink the soda.
7. She said that soda have a advantages too for our daily life. Soda could clean
stuff easily. Like closet,aluminium pan,and many other.
8. She said that, if we want to prove the highly sweeteners that contain in a bottle
of soda, we can boiled it until sticky. The sticky thing that comes out is the
fructose that a bottle of soda contains.
9. Shes agree that children nowdays are addicted with soda. And she want it will
be continues.
10. Shes included to my respondents to surveys my research. And she is never drink
the soda in a week. Because she know and understand about the bad effect from
soda. And she also know how to avoid the soda.

Research About Coin Through The Soda

First , prepare the thing that needed to do the observation. It will need:
A cup of soda
Yellow coin 500 ruphiah
Timer
The Step to do the observation is:
Frist put the coin into the cup of soda
Wait until the coin react with the soda.

The result from the coin that I put into a cup of soda is:
Two hours early, the coin have change color. The coin that have yellow color,
change to be fading.
Five hours later,the cavities are gone
And until 11 hours later the coin is more fading. The coin doesnt melted.
So the conclusion is the soda couldnt made coin to be melted. The soda just
fading the color of the yellow coin.

Conclusion
So here are the conclusion from this mini research:
Soda is very bad for our body,it will damage our body system like our
kidneys,intestines,teeth,and our bones. And also it could make people have an
obesity and diabetes.
People are hard to stop drink a soda. Because they dont really understand about
the bad effect from soda.

People arent know how to avoid the soda. There many ways to avoid the soda.
Like change our drink with mineral water,infused water,juice, and offcourse
green tea that could stop the addicted feeling with soda.
Not just an adult that drink the soda, many children are drink soda too. Its not
good for their body system. Their health will damages early.
The reason why many people are still drink soda wether theyre know the bad
effect from it, is because soda are sale in everywhere. In the
canteen,supermarket,minimarket,junk food restaurant,caf,and many more. Soda
is very easily to get.
