How effective were the Nazi 'family policies' during the 1930s?
Source A: A British historian writing in 1998.
The Nazi government forced professional women, such as doctors and lawyers, to give up their
jobs and produce children. Whilst the women stayed at home it was the role of men to earn
money to keep the family. However, after six years of Nazi rule there were more women in work
than in 1933.
Source B: A German cartoon from the 1930s with the caption 'Introducing Frau Mueller who up to
now has brought twelve children into the world'.
Source C: A letter to Hitler from several women, published in a German newspaper in 1934.
Today man is educated against marriage. We see our daughters growing up in the vague hope
of getting a man and having children. A son, even the youngest, laughs in his mother's face. He
regards her as his servant. We are pleased to support your government's policies to change
these attitudes.
Source D: An advertisement for a wife published in a German newspaper in 1935.
52 year old Aryan doctor. Fought in First World War. Wishes to settle down. Wants male children
through marriage to a young, healthy, Aryan virgin. She should be undemanding, thrifty, used to
heavy work, broad hipped, with flat heels and no earrings.
