GRADE: 4.
CHAPTER / MODULE: 1.
UNIT / LESSON TOPIC: Comprehension Activity.

KNOWLEDGE AREAS

Explain to learners that when completing a comprehension activity there is a

method to use. This method will ensure that they gain a thorough
understanding of the text and the questions related to that text.
The way in which we tackle a comprehension is as follows:
1. Give the learners both the questions and the text that they are to read.
2. Allow the learners to read through the questions first.
3. Allow the learners to read through the text.
4. Explain to learners that, as they are reading through the text they are more
than welcome to highlight/underline the important points in the text. Also
explain that they are to underline any words/ideas they are not sure of.
5. Allow learners to ask any questions they have about the questions and the
text they have just read. Discuss questions that learners have with the rest
of the class.
6. Once this discussion is complete allow learners to read the text and
questions again before they begin answering the questions.
7. Now the learners are ready to complete the comprehension.

ACTIVITIES:
Activity 1: Comprehension
John is a Grade 4 learner at a school in Johannesburg. When he goes to bed at
night he writes in his diary. Each night he writes about the day that he has had.
Read the following extract taken from Johns diary. Remember to read it carefully to
make sure you understand what John has written. Once the whole class has read
the diary extract your educator will allow you to discuss what you have just read

Monday, 9 February
Dear diary
Today was a very exciting day, I made two new friends at school, Tom and Sipho. They are both in
my class and before today I didnt actually realise what great guys they are. We spent the whole
of first break playing marbles and talking about cricket and soccer. All three of us were very
excited about our first cricket practice and were hoping that we were good enough to make the
Under 10 A Team.
Finally the bell rang at the end of the day, and we were off to cricket practice. We met our
coach, Mr Jones, he explained the rules of the game, even though Tom, Sipho and myself knew
them. We eventually got onto the field and the three of us played some of the best cricket of our
lives. At the end of practice Mr Jones said that we should check the notice board the next day to
see if we had made the team.
Tom, Sipho and I all said goodbye after practice and were very excited to see the notice board
the next day.
I am really exhausted after todays cricket practice, and am going to sleep now hoping to read
some good news on the notice board tomorrow.

Tuesday, 10 February
Dear Diary
Today was even more exciting than yesterday. Tom, Sipho and I all got to school at the same time,
and the first thing we did was check the notice board. Guess what? We all made the cricket team
and would play our first match on Saturday. I am really nervous about the match but I will try my
best on the day.
We also had a really fantastic Technology lesson today, we built toy cars from waste material and
our teacher said that once they were complete we would race against the other Grade 4 class. I
hope we do well because there is a prize for the winning class.
My homework was quite tough today, but it is all finished and as I sit here and write about my
fun-filled day I cant help but think about my cricket match on Saturday. I hope we play well
enough to beat our opponents.
