Dear Parishioners,
We often see individuals preaching at street corners telling us: Prepare, beware,
the end is near; the world will end on (whatever date seems like a good sound date e.g.
2000) and they try to put the fear of God into us!
Its good that we prepare and think about the future but the problem is as Jesus
said: But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the
Son, no one but the Father.
In the Gospel we can get even more confused! Jesus, at the outset appears to be
talking of a distant event which may happen in a future generation; he then tells the
parable of the fig tree and invites his disciples to prepare for it to happen in their lifetime.
Then he goes on to say, as I have quoted above nobody knows!
So its a bit confusing, to say the least! Yes, it is exciting to speculate the end of time;
but for each of us, the end of our world as we know it, comes at the hour of OUR death.
This is the time we need to prepare for. We can safely leave the rest in Gods hands. In a
sense, we have already begun an Advent theme: Prepare a way for the Lord. That sounds
like a good way to continue living, praying and working to build up Gods kingdom of
justice, love and peace. Then we will be ready any day the Lord calls us to himself when
our world ends and we begin a new life with God.
Many THANKS to all who are concerned about my health and offered remedies, no
end of lemon, honey, ginger, eucalyptus and soothers of various kinds. Thanks to all the
remedies and for your prayers, I am about 90% better!
In the middle of all this I am trying to get fit for the cycle ride to Paris for the Climate
Change convention next week.
There are 17 of us, cyclists setting out for Dieppe on Tuesday 24th. We spend three
days, 50 miles each day and hopefully will arrive in Paris on Friday afternoon. There will
be a reception for all who have walked, cycled or travelled one way or the other. On
Saturday there is a Rally to show the power of feeling of ordinary people and their concern
about global warming etc.
An Ecumenical Service will take place in Notre Dame Cathedral and various fringe
gatherings related to the Climate Change Conference. Watch this space!
Thats all for now, have a good week. God bless.
