17th /18th SEPTEMBER 2016

25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
Our first reading today introduces the Prophet Amos, the Prophet
of Social Justice, as he is often called. He is the champion of the poor, the
oppressed and the downtrodden. He condemns the exploitation of the
poor in his day he gives a warning to those who buy up the poor for money and those who
swindle the weigh in scales. Little has changed in our society.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells us we cannot serve God and money. His parable seems almost
to support dishonesty. The steward, in the parable, wastes his maters goods. He is dismissed
from his job but given time to submit his final accounts. He acts swiftly, to win himself friends
for the future. It is this aspect that Jesus compliments him on the fact that he is resourceful
in coping with the impending emergency of being out of a job.
THANKS: How can I thank everyone enough for the wonderful 70th birthday
celebration last Sunday your cards, gifts, good wishes and the reception after Mass. It was
just a magnificent occasion. THANK YOU ALL!!
PLANNED GIVING DRIVE: As mentioned in last weeks newsletter, we start a Planned
Giving Drive today. On your way into church you will be handed a leaflet for Week 1: OUR
CALL TO STEWARDSHIP. In the Gospel, Jesus tells of wise and faithful stewards (unlike the
one in todays Gospel). The wise steward is FAITHFUL, GENEROUS, RESPONSIBLE etc. we
are made stewards of Gods generous gifts to u. we are blessed in this parish of St John
Vianney: a beautiful church; Parish Halls, a Verbum Dei Community; a brand new priest, Fr
Damian; a large Parish Community of generous people; parishioners willing to be active in
our Liturgy, Sacramental life of the parish, outreach to the poor and needy to mention just a
few items. Because of our generosity we have been able to accommodate the Verbum Dei
Community and purchased a new Presbytery at No 10.
The maintenance of all our Parish activities demands money. You have been very
generous but we need to keep abreast of inflation and increased cost of living. This is why
we are asking you to think about what you are giving over the last few years and consider
giving a little more each week. Thats it in a nutshell!!
Fr Damian and I will speak about this at our Masses this week and three members of
our Pastoral Council will speak next weekend.
CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME: I cant emphasise enough the importance that those
possible candidates in Year10 should now register for Confirmation. (See details overleaf).
WELCOME: We formally welcome the new Verbum Dei Sisters, Sr Catherine, Sr
Emilana, Sr. Devy (who replaces Sr. Clara) who have joined Sr Monica. We intend having a
farewell function for Sr Clara on Sunday 16th October after the 11am Mass.
Thats all for now, God bless.

Fr Joe

OUR PARISH, OUR NEEDS, OUR

RESPONSIBILITY PLANNED GIVING
APPEAL
As each one has received a gift, use it to
serve one another as good stewards of
Gods varied Grace - 1 Peter 4:10
Our parish has a long history of being a
spiritual centre in the lives of many people.
Periodically reflecting on our blessings and
renewing our commitment to our Catholic
Faith is an important part of spiritual
growth and Christian discipleship; giving
thanks to God first and foremost! This
weekend we launch a Planned Giving
appeal.
Over the coming weeks we want all
parishioners to take this opportunity to
prayerfully reflect on their commitment to
our parish. As a parish and as individuals,
we have been blessed with many, varied
gifts. The life of a steward calls us to share
our gifts of time, talent and financial
blessings with our family, our community
and our world. These gifts come from God,
so let us strive to return a sacrificial, not
token, portion to Him. Today, please take an
appeal newsletter as you leave Mass. We
shall be hearing more about stewardship
and the needs of our parish over the coming
weeks. Please give prayerful consideration
to this appeal. If you have any questions,
there shall be volunteers available after
Mass today. Thank you.
