Excel-based Math Project Assignment #1


In an online class, the primary learning resources are web sites located on the internet. In this
initial assignment (Excel Assignment #1), you will use Excel tutorial web sites as your primary
learning resource and complete this Excel introductory assignment.
Assignment #1 Objective: Use the available online Excel tutorial resources and learn the
Excel tasks required for the MAT 101 Excel-based math project.

Determine the Excel version you are using (e.g. Excel 2007)
Given the Excel version, do an internet search for free on-line Excel tutorials for
beginning students
Based on your internet search, for each on-line Excel tutorial, create a list of these
Excel learning sites. This list will include name and internet bookmark (hyperlink) of
each site.
The steps needed to complete the assignment are listed below. Read the assignments
list of steps so that you have some familiarity with the assignments required tasks
Use the internet Excel web sites found in your search as a learning tool and complete
each step of this assignment.

Assignment #1: Step by Step Instructions


1) Open Excel and create a blank workbook. Excel spreadsheets consists of a rectangular array of cells. Associated
with each cell is its location. Enter the text label x into the spreadsheet cell A1 (Column A Row 1):

2) Given the data set listed below, enter each data value into the cells located in column A. Hint: The data value 1.9
should be entered into the cell A2, the value 2.5 into cell A3,

3) Use the Excel command Save or Save As then choose a filename and save your Excel workbook.

4) Now we will create a second column of data in Excel in column B.


In cell B1, enter the variable label y
We will create data set of a straight line and the equation for our line will be:
y = 5.3*x + 12.0
5) Given the x values in Excel column A, and the equation of our line, in column B, create the corresponding y
values. Below is my data set that is in my Excel spreadsheet.

6) Use the Excel Scatter Plot function to create a plot of this data. Be sure an add an x axis title,
y axis title and a plot title. Below is my scatter plot with all required titles.

7) Given the table of data listed below, select this listed below and do a copy command then paste data into your
Excel spreadsheet. Now that this data in your spreadsheet, use the Excel Sort command to sort this data so that it
is ordered from low to high. Quick example of data set sorted from low to high is {30,10,20,40} Excel Sort -
{10,20,30,40}.

8) Given the data set used in step 7), use the Excel function AVERAGE to compute the average of this data set.
Hint: the correct average of this data set is 8.52.
