Evaluation of Senior Nursing Students Performance With
High Fidelity Simulation

Abstract
Studies have shown that nursing students and new graduate nurses are recognized
as lacking critical thinking skills. Often, nursing students are only assigned a one or
two patients which limits their ability to develop and enhance clinical judgment in
preparation for the real nursing-practice environment. This descriptive correlational
study evaluated student performance using high-fidelity simulation in a
convenience sample of senior nursing students in an undergraduate nursing
program. Student performance was evaluated with a two- and a four- patient
assignment in the nursing simulation laboratory, situations that mirrored a realistic
patient-care assignment. A previously validated Simulation Evaluation Instrument,
developed by Todd, Manz, Hawkins, Parsons, and Hercinger (2008), was utilized in
this pilot study. Key findings indicated that student performance improved between
the sequence of a two- and four- patient assignment. (L.F., P.G. 2013)
The Real World: Lived Experiences of Student Nurses during

Clinical Practice
Abstract
This study examined the lived experiences of student nurses during their clinical practice
from the phenomenological point of view of nine student nurses. Student nurses are found to
be on the verge of developing the sense of responsibility for the health and well-being of
others as having been introduced to the threshold of clinical practice at early adulthood.
Leaving the safe and supportive teaching environments of their school, they are placed into
clinical environments that are perceived as unfamiliar and complex and that require dealings
with diverse human relations. Notably, the groups experiences in clinical practice provide
greater insight to develop an effective clinical teaching strategy in nursing education. Focus
group discussions and interviews were the main methods of data gathering. Employment of
Colaizzi's strategy in descriptive phenomenology established the data analysis. The
participants considered clinical practice to be an essential component of their learning
process. The integration of both theory and practice and opportunities for application and
laboratory skills enable student nurses to learn effectively, to feel confident with their skills,
and to become competent in taking care of patients. Meanwhile, problems and concerns
may be addressed better if good interpersonal relations and sustained communication are
practiced. Findings suggest that there is a need to rethink about the clinical skills training in
the field of nursing. Distinctly, approaches in order to decrease the gap that exists between
the academic and the clinical component of nursing education should be explored, clinical
instructors on the other hand need to design strategies and new innovative ways for more
effective clinical teaching. Finally, there is a necessity to use approaches that facilitate
learning in clinical practice in beyond creating a conducive clinical learning environment.

Caring competencies of baccalaureate nursing students of

Abstract
Caring is a core nursing value and a desirable attribute in nursing students. This
study was conducted to investigate and determine student nurses caring
competencies as perceived by patients. Furthermore, it proposed a caring
intervention guide which could be used to build and enhance students caring
behaviors that can be adapted to clinical situations.
Preparedness of Nursing International Students for their

Clinical Learning in the Philippines
Abstract
The Republic of the Philippines is well known for producing quality nurses for the
medical field around the world. It is not uncommon to find Filipino nurses in
prestigious hospitals in many hospitals both in First World and Third World countries.
This excellent record of performance has most likely been one of the reasons why
there is an increase in the number of international students coming to the
Philippines to complete their nursing degrees. One foreseeable challenge that
international nursing students must face in the Philippines is effective
communication with patients during their clinical learning. Little is known about how
these students are prepared to communicate effectively in a context that is so
culturally diverse from their own. Using focus groups design, four groups of nursing
students were interviewed to explore their lived experiences pertaining to the
preparedness for their multicultural communication for the Philippine hospital
settings. Results will help understand how effectively international nursing students
are prepared to communicate with their Philippine patients. (S.WM.2015)
Virtual Simulation Learning among Student Nurses in the

Post Anesthesia Care Unit
Abstract
Preparing student nurses to be ready for clinical setting is very vital and is a
huge challenge of the nursing academe. One strategy is through the use of
high fidelity virtual simulations. The virtual simulation environment is both a
strategy and an evaluation tool. This is a new trend in nursing education in
which it provides more opportunity to learn through experience. Virtual
simulations facilitate the increased use of learning technology and promote
experiential learning thus enhancing their readiness to care for actual
patients. The virtual laboratory provides nursing students with meaningful
experience and freedom to practice nursing interventions in an environment
which is safe and risk free. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of
the virtual simulation experience in the preparation of students in caring for
post anesthetic care unit clients. An after only or post - test design was
used in this study. The study was conducted in the Virtual Simulation Center
in Cebu Normal University College of Nursing, Philippines. There were 93
Level III nursing students participated in the simulation experience using
Emergency Care Simulator (ECS) Standard Man. Each group underwent a 4
hour customized Care of PACU Client simulation. After the experience they
were asked to rate the effectiveness of the simulation using the modified
standardized Simulation Effectiveness Tool. The results showed that the
Virtual Learning Experience played an important role in the learning process
and preparation of the students. The computed mean average showed the
exposure to the virtual learning simulation prior to hospital duty is indeed
very effective in helping the students to be more ready and more confident
in caring for actual patients (D.P., EI.S. 2012)
