ApplicationsareinvitedforaPh.D.studentshipontheinvestigationanddevelopmentofdesign,
optimisationandvirtualtestingofcomposites.
ThePhDprojectispartofSHERLOC,alargeresearchprogramme(9M)fundedbytheClean
SkyJointTechnologyInitiativeandledbytheDepartmentofAeronauticsatImperialCollege
London.TheCleanSkyinitiativeisapublicprivatepartnershipbetweentheEuropean
Commissionandtheaerospaceindustryaimedatdevelopingbreakthroughtechnologiesto
significantlyimprovetheenvironmentalperformanceoffutureairplanes.TheSHERLOC
programmeisbeingundertakenbyaconsortiumofeightpartnerorganisations(including
industries,universitiesandindustrialresearchorganisationsintheUK,Spain,Greeceand
Belgium)andisfocussedonstructuralhealthmonitoring(SHM)technologiesandinnovative
designandmanufacturingforthecompositefuselageofagreenregionaljet.Thesuccessful
PhDapplicantwillcontributetoarangeoftasksassociatedwiththebroaderaimsofthe
SHERLOCproject(including,forexample,mechanicaltestingofdesignedcompositestructures
andexperimentalevaluationofSHMsystems)buttheprincipalfocuswillbeonthedevelopment
andinvestigationofdesignandoptimisationofcomposites.
Arobustdesignandoptimisationapproachwillbedevelopedtosimulatethesequenceof
actionstakenduringdesignandstructuralsizinginindustry,includingmaterialcharacterization,
preliminaryanalysisanddetaileddesign.Thismethodisarobustmultiobjectiveapproachfor
structuralsizingofcompositesatdifferentdesignstagesthatincludesprogressivefailure
analysisofcomposites.ThisPhDprojectwillfurtherdevelopandextendthismethodology
throughmodellingusingfiniteelementsandusingadvancedoptimisationalgorithms.
Applicantsshouldhaveastronginterestincomputationalmethodsandoptimisationalgorithms
forcompositecomponents,possessanalytical,experimental,advancedprogramingskillsand
alsohavegoodcommunicationskills(includingreportwritingandoralpresentation).Applications
areinvitedfromcandidateswith(orwhoexpecttogain)afirstclasshonoursdegreeina
relevantengineeringsubject.FundingisavailableforUKandEUcitizensonly.The
studentshipisforthreeandhalfyearsstartingassoonaspossibleandwillprovidefullcoverage
oftuitionfeesandanannualtaxfreestipendofapproximately20,000.
