The key takeaways are tips and strategies for successful potty training including preparing the child, establishing a routine, using rewards and avoiding common mistakes.

Some signs that a child is ready include showing interest in others using the toilet, ability to walk and sit independently, ability to stay dry for over 2 hours, ability to communicate needs and understand potty-related words.

Tips for preparing a child include introducing them to the bathroom and potty chair, allowing them to watch others use the toilet while explaining what's happening, making diaper changes less enjoyable to use potty instead, and establishing potty-related vocabulary.

TRAINING

Ahh. the joys of parenting, when you see your child take his first
steps, or when he says his first words. These are moments that
any parent will remember for as long as they live.
BUT do you know what else parents remember for as long as
they live?
Yep, its a little nightmare called POTTY TRAINING.
If I were to describe how potty training my child was for me I
would probably refer to it as one of the most exhausting times of
my life.
I was totally fed up with the whole potty training process. The
advice I had received from close friends and family wasnt
working, the potty books and DVDs were useless.
Then something wonderful happened like my child would just
walk up to me and tell me he needed to go. Next he would sit on
his potty seat and I would get so happy and proud, but then the
rest of the day he would pee on the floor and poop in his pants.
I always ended up disappointed.
Eventually he started going in his potty more often until it was the
norm for him.
Toilet training my first child was hard, stressful, exhausting and I
really felt like I was going to need therapy after it was over.
The story with my second child was the exact opposite.
Its like God wanted to make amends for the pain and suffering I
went through the first time around.
The training went extremely smooth all the way through.

Less accidents.
No more crying.(Im talking about me here)
Faster progress.
Potty training my second child was actually an enjoyable
experience. Hands down.
The SECRET?
I had every little detail planned out weeks ahead of schedule.
ITS SAID THAT EVERY MINUTE SPENT PLANNING SAVES 10 MINUTES
OF EXECUTION.
Everything was set and all I had to do was pick a date when me
and my child would begin the training process.
And
Im going to share the planning and preparation process with you
in the pages that follow, so read on or suffer the consequences..
just kidding, but seriously keep reading.

#1: Are you absolutely sure your child is

ready to start potty training?
The right age to start potty training your child is determined by
physical and emotional readiness. All children are different, some
will show readiness signs before or after the average age. If you
can clearly see that your toddler is not ready to start learning how
to poop or pee in the potty, then dont force him to.
It really doesnt matter if youre potty training girls or potty
training boys, both show almost identical signs of readiness.
Here are the readiness signs you need to look for:
Your child shows an interest in the toilet when someone else
is using it.
Is able to walk and sit on his own for short periods of time.
Is able to keep himself dry for more than 2 hours(ability to
store pee).
Your child imitates you around the house.
Is able to communicate his or her wants and understands
words used for elimination.
Complains about wet or dirty diapers, or does actions like
pulling off diaper and peeing on the floor.

If the readiness signs are there, that means your child is physically
and emotionally ready to begin the potty training process.
This is the moment when most parents screw up, just like I did
with my first born.
Let me ask you something.
Do you know why potty training is so hard?
First of all is there any parenting activity that is not hard?
The thing is, youre asking your child to change a routine that hes
followed his whole life i.e. pooping and peeing in diapers.
Habit developing is a stressful task for adults, let alone for 2 year
toddlers.
Careful planning and preparation allows for both the parent and
for the child to kinda ease into the new routine aka pooping and
peeing in the potty.
There are 2 parts:
A. Preparing yourself
B. Preparing your child

A. Preparing yourself
As with all parenting and teaching activities a relaxed approach
always makes for faster progress.
When it comes to potty training your child, being relaxed is one of
the things you can do to make his transition from diapers to the
potty a stress-free experience.
And you can be relaxed by:
Letting go of expectations
Letting go of comparing your child with other children who
have already been potty trained, even older siblings
Knowing how to talk to your child about potty training
Knowing what problems and setbacks to expect
Being involved in all areas of your childs learning activities allows
you to easily introduce potty training into his usual daily routine.
This also allows you to quickly spot how your child signals the
need to use the potty.
Bad timing is probably one of the most common reasons why
parents fail at potty training their child.
With that being said you should never start potty training your
child if you find yourself in any of the following situations:
You just gave birth to another baby, or are about to
You and your family have just moved to a new house
You have just returned from a vacation

The real trick is to begin potty training your child only when
youre 100% sure that you can devote all your time and energy to
encourage your child on a daily basis.
Children can easily get confused about what you want from them.
Decide on a potty training vocabulary and make sure everyone in
the house uses the same terms for body parts, bathroom and potty
routines.
If its possible try not to involve multiple people in the actual potty
training process. The ideal scenario would be if the parent who
has noticed the readiness signs and has established constant
rapport with the child to be the one to do the training.

B. Preparing the child

First thing you should do when it comes to potty training is
introducing your child to the bathroom and the potty chair, and
its great if this is done weeks, even months ahead.
You can do this by reading him a book or letting him play with a
toy while sitting on the potty in the bathroom.
Even if this might seem awkward in the beginning, allowing your
child to watch you use the toilet and at the same time explaining
to him what it is that your doing can really speed up the whole
training process.
This is also a good time to begin teaching your child potty training
words that are associated with the usual potty routines.
Once your child shows discomfort with a dirty diaper, try to make
changing their diaper as much of a chore for them as it is for you.
In time this will lead your child to believe that using the potty
instead of diapers is easier and more fun.
When it comes to rewards, the thing that helps the most is
figuring out whats the one thing that your child would do
anything for.

Finishing up
This is about everything you should consider before starting the
actual potty training process.
Of course there are a lot of variables when it comes to potty
training your child. Unfortunately babies dont come with an
instruction manual.
If I were to recommend only one resource for helping you deal
with potty training fast and stress-free, that would be Carol Clines
Potty Training in 3 Days method.
I sincerely hope that the information I shared with you in this
mini-guide will help you tackle potty training with a lot
confidence and a positive attitude.
