configurations are the ones loaded by the students during the first lab.
They include the OSPF and IS-IS configurations as well as BGP full mesh
in SP 1 Core and BGP Route Reflectors in SP 2 Core.

Instructor Procedures
Lab Setup

Description
This section provides additional information for instructors teaching the
Cisco IOS XR MPLS and Tunnel Technologies for IPv4 course. These
procedures assume the P and PE routers are running IOS XR 3.9.0 with
the cisco user as root system and one non-owner SDR (slots 4 and 5 on an
8-slot CRS-1 and a XR12000 or slots 1 and 2 on a 4-slot CRS-1) configured.
The procedures may need to be modified if the configuration or installed
Cisco IOS XR software is different. It is up to the instructor to work
through any such issues. In extreme cases it may be necessary to turboboot
the RPs; the necessary mini and os-mbi.vm files are on the TFTP server.

Lab Setup

Lab Equipment Preparation Software Upgrade to Rel 3.9.0

It is expected that the routers in the lab assigned to the instructor are at a
release version less than the required version for this course. The required
version is Rel 3.9.0 as of the writing of this document.
_____________________________ Note _________________________
Each time this class is taught the routers in the lab should have the
Rel 3.9.0 disks should be in the disk0: slot on all routers (owner and
non-owner SDRs) except for the CRS-1 non-owner DRP cards which use
disk0:.
If the disk1:s are not in their slot, send an email to the
Instructor list.
__________________________________________________________________
Use these steps to bring the routers to Rel 3.9.0 using the mounted disk1:
1. Verify that Rel 3.9.0 is the release on disk1: on all owner and nonowner SDRs, except the CRS-1 non-owner routers.
2. Verify the status of the SDRs on each ruouter:
a. If the SDRs are active, skip to Step 3

Lab Setup

b. If the SDRs are NOT set up, enter Admin config mode and enter:
load disk1:/.backup/XMPLST4/P[E]n_admin_init
commit replace

3. Bring all routers to ROMMON mode (except CEs)

a. Enter Admin mode on the owner SDR
b. Enter the config-reg 0x0 loc all command and be certain that all
the RP cards change (DRPs do not change)
c. Reload the non-owner SDR slot FIRST with the reload command
d. Reload the standby RP second
e. Reload the active RP
f.

Verify that all the cards are at the ROMMON prompt

4. Review the current set values by entering the set command

5. Change the BOOT variable
a. Enter the unset BOOT command
b. Enter the sync command
c. Enter the set command again to verify there is no BOOT value
d. Enter BOOT=disk1:hfr-os-mbi-3.9.0/mbihfr-rp.vm for CRS-1 or
BOOT=disk1:c12k-os-mbi-3.9.0/mbiprp-rp.vm for XR 12000
e. Enter sync
f.

Enter the set command to verify the BOOT variable is correctly set

6. Reload RP0 FIRST by entering the confreg 0x2 command followed by

the reset when requested
7. Verify RP0 is booting correctly and then enter the confreg 0x2
command on RP1 followed by reset when requested
8. When RP0 is up, load the RP for the SDR. This is unnecessary on the
CRS-1 as it should happen automatically by responding to the Admin
configuration file
________________________ CAUTION _______________________
The SIP/SPA slots take a long time to reload. Make sure all
SPA interfaces are initialized before loading the base
configuration, else the configuration will not load correctly.
______________________________________________________________
9. Once the router has completed the reload operation verify that the base
mini (and other base files) and MPLS files are installed. These are the
only required software packages on disk1: of the P and PE routers:

Lab Equipment Preparation Starting Configuration

Using the configuration files tables in the Lab Configuration File Names
section, perform the following steps:
1. On all SP 1 Core routers, log on and verify the SDR configuration is in
place and working properly. If both owner and non-owner SDRs are
configured, verify they are operational. If they are operational, skip to
Step 3.
2. On all SP 1 Core routers, log on and enter Admin configuration mode.
Then load the course admin_init file and do a commit replace
(respond with Y to the question) to create the non-owner SDRs which
make up the SP 2 Core. Exit back to EXEC mode.
3. From EXEC mode, enter configuration mode. Immediately do a
commit replace (respond with Y to the question) to wipe out any SDR
configuration. Then load the course base file and do another commit
replace (respond with Y to the question).
4. Once the SP 2 Core non-owner SDRs are operational, log on and enter
configuration mode. Immediately do a commit replace (respond with
Y to the question) to wipe out any SDR configuration. Then load the
course base file and do another commit replace (respond with Y to the
question).

Lab Equipment Preparation Initial Files

Using the configuration files table in the Lab Configuration File Names
section, copy the initialization files to the default directory (/usr).
1. On each SDR delete ALL files from the default directory, /usr. Enter
the dir command to determine what files, if any, are in the default
directory. Delete the files.
2. On each SDR copy all the files ending with _init from the backup
directory, /.backup/XMPLST4, to the default directory. Reminder: the
files for the non-owner SDR on the CRS-1 routers is located on disk0:.
copy disk1:/.backup/XMPLST4/P[E]n[n]_<file name>
P[E]n[n]_<file name>

Lab Equipment Preparation CE Routers

1. Log on to each CE router and replace the running config in two (2)
steps with the course CE init file:
a. Using the following command, clear the existing configuration:
config replace disk0:null
Verify the CE configuration is cleared.
b. Use the following command to load the initial configuration file:
config replace disk0:CEn_XMPLST4_init
__________________________ Note _________________________
If the CE is running the 12.4 Advanced Enterprise image, try to
avoid reloading as the image is very large and the boot image is out
of date (newer ones wont fit in available nvram:), so a reload will
possibly take 10 to 20 minutes.
______________________________________________________________
2. Make the CEs running configuration permanent for the class
copy run start
Verify the connectivity of all routers.

that should be present on each owner and non-owner SDR and any
relevant comment. The files are located in:
