What is Creativity?
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity
is characterised by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden
patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to
generate solutions. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then
producing. If you have ideas, but dont act on them, you are imaginative but not
creative.
Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being. Creativity
requires passion and commitment. It brings to our awareness what was
previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened
consciousness: ecstasy. Rollo May, The Courage to Create [Is this possible
in business? I believe so, but you have to be willing to take risks and progress
through discomfort to get to the finish line.]
A product is creative when it is (a) novel and (b) appropriate. A novel product is
original not predictable. The bigger the concept, and the more the product
stimulates further work and ideas, the more the product is creative.
Sternberg & Lubart, Defying the Crowd

Or

Creativity is define as a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow

valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea ,
a scientific theory , a musical composition or a joke ) or a physical object (such as
an invention , a literary work or a painting ).
Scholarly interest in creativity involves many definitions and concepts pertaining to
a number of disciplines: psychology , cognitive science , education ,
philosophy (particularly philosophy of
science ), technology , theology , sociology , linguistics , business
studies , songwriting , and economics , covering the relations between creativity and
general intelligence, mental and neurological processes, personality type and
creative ability, creativity and mental health; the potential for fostering creativity
through education and training, especially as augmented by technology; and the
application of creative resources to improve the effectiveness of teaching and
learning.

Etymology
The lexeme in the English word creativity comes from the Latin term cre "to
create, make": its derivational suffixes also come from Latin. The word "create"
appeared in English as early as the 14th century, notably in Chaucer, to indicate
divine creation (in The Parson's Tale ). However, its modern meaning as an act of
human creation did not emerge until after the Enlightenment .

Twentieth century to the present day

The insights of Poincar and von Helmholtz were built on in early accounts of the
creative process by pioneering theorists such as Graham Wallas and Max
Wertheimer . In his work Art of Thought, published in 1926, Wallas presented one of
the first models of the creative process. In the Wallas stage model, creative
insights and illuminations may be explained by a process consisting of 5 stages:

PRINCIPALS OF CREATIVITY:
(1) preparation: (preparatory work on a problem that focuses the individual's mind
on the problem and explores the problem's dimensions),
(2) incubation:

(where the problem is internalized into the unconscious mind and

nothing appears externally to be happening),

(3) intimation:

(the creative person gets a "feeling" that a solution is on its way),

(4) illumination: or insight (where the creative idea bursts forth from
its preconscious processing into conscious awareness);
(5) verification: (where
applied).

the idea is consciously verified, elaborated, and then

(6) Define and Distill The Problem: Einstein once said that If I had 20 days
to solve a problem, I would take 19 days to define it. Its important to build in
constraints that will frame a possible solution and, as Robert Weisberg points
out in his book Creativity , brainstorming often fails for exactly this reason
Moreover, as I pointed out in an earlier post about technology , the things we
create are not monolithic, but combinations of components. So if your are
searching for creative solutions, its important that you frame and target an
area ripe for innovation.
Creativity doesnt happen in a vacuum, but is only valuable in service of
some goal, whether that is a particular idea to be expressed in a painting or
a poem, value created by a new business model or the brand to be promoted
in a marketing campaign. Simply throwing around crazy ideas never
accomplishes anything.
(7) Learn The Rules Before You Set Out To Break Them:
While we commonly view creativity as the product of brilliant flashes, the
reality is
exactly the opposite. This paper details a wealth of research
that suggests that
creativity comes only after years of preparation.
Harvards Howard Gardner reported similar results in his study chronicling
seven of histories greatest geniuses, Creating Minds .
And its not only a matter of putting in your time. As Anders
Ericsson describes in his highly cited, decades long study, it takes deliberate
practice , which involves working on weak areas, seeking out feedback and
continual improvement. No day at the beach!
There are, of course, stories of brilliant innovations coming from seemingly
instant insights. However, as this article shows, in reality either the
innovator in question had been working on the problem for a long time or that
they had intense knowledge of the subject matter that alerted them to the
significance of a happy accident.
The evidence on this point couldnt be clearer. Successful creative people
spend years learning their fields before they begin to change them . So if you
want to create something truly new and different, your best bet is to start by
learning your field extremely well.
(8) Cross Domains:
While deep knowledge of a specific field is important, it is not enough In
fact, research suggests that many professionals actually get worse over time.
Just as familiarity breeds contempt, constant exposure to similar fact
patterns produces lazy thinking.

As Ive written before, breakthrough innovation happens when ideas are

synthesized from more than one domain. Pick any important discovery,
whether it is Darwin and natural selection, Picasso and cubism, Einstein and
relativity and invariably they used concepts from two or more fields.
Increasingly, real world innovation is reflecting this reality. Some of the
worlds most exciting research is happening now at the Sante Fe Institute ,
which was set up specifically for interdisciplinary investigation. In a similar
vein, most software today is developed using Agile and Scrum methods, both
of which emphasize cross-functional teams.
If youre looking for answers to hard questions, it always helps to broaden
your search.
(9) Hedge Your Bets:
We often see great innovators as big dreamers, who through caution to the
wind and bet everything on one big idea. The reality is much more
complicated than that.
Probably the greatest burst of creativity the world has ever seen was
Einsteins miracle year in which he unleashed three papers which changed
the world. In one, he proved the existence of the atom by
explaining Brownian motion . In another, he described the photoelectric
effect and proposed the existence of light quanta . The third was his famous
paper of special relativity.
The impact of these papers was almost unimaginable. They spawned
innovations such as nuclear power, lasers, i-Pods, GPS devices, and much
more. However, there was a fourth, often forgotten paper that described how
to determine the number of molecules in a liquid. It was an important paper
for the time, but in context it hardly seems worth the effort.
Why did he bother? Because he still hadnt earned his doctorate and needed
a more conventional idea for his dissertation. After all, his primary objective
wasnt to change history, but to get a job as a university professor!
(10) Keep At It:
Creativity is not something that comes easy, even to geniuses. Immanuel
Kant toiled in obscurity for most of his life when reading David
Hume awakened him from his slumbers. Hume himself saw his first book, A
Treatise on Human Nature flop before he gained fame decades later (and
today his Treatise is considered a masterwork)..
At the age of 35,the poet Charles Bukowski lay penniless and near death in
a charity ward from a bleeding ulcer that was caused by more than a decade
of heavy drinking, tawdry rooming houses and questionable women. Later,

SEC:A

2015-EL

after he gained fame and fortune, a reporter asked him to what he owed his
enormous success. Endurance, he said.
And the evidence is not just anecdotal. A study of musicians found that the
number of masterpieces produced is highly correlated to overall productivity.
The more work you do, the better your work gets.
Finally, any serious review of paradigm breaking creative accomplishment is
sure to find a pattern of constant revision. Creative geniuses tend to be less
the ones with the quickest answers and more the ones who keep working till
they get it right.

FURTHER Principle of Creativity:

From what i have search in internet, creativity means that the ability
to transcend
Traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationship, or the like, and to create
meaningful new ideas,
Forms , methods, interpretations, and others. A quote from Linda Naiman
said that
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality and it
involves with two process which
is thinking, then producing. This is the best quote because with
creativity will produce
something that new or improving new ideas. Creativity have general
principles that are think
outside the box means that think beyond the others idea, avoid the normal,
be brave means
brave to come up with new distinctive idea and maybe some creative ideas is
illogical.
There are few principles in creativity. One of them are, 1)

new ideas:
elements.

are composed of old

SEC:A

2)

Critical thinking:

2015-EL

is mostly about to produce correct thinking.

Creativity is mainly
about alternative possibilities which is how to come up with new and useful
ideas. That is like I
mention earlier, a new idea might be a new theory, a new product, a
new solution to a
problem, or a conception for a piece of art. In order to have something
different is to produce
something that is weird, distinctive and special. The new ideas are actually
old ones rearranged
in a new way meaning that some improvement is occur by refer to the old
one. This applies not just to the creation of concept or the theories but also
the launching of new fashion, new style
or cultural trends. Simply to say that ideas are usually composed of different
elements, and we
look for new combination of ideas by joining different ideas together, erasing
some elements,
or replacing some elements by other ones. Let say we consider the idea
of a cellphone. This
idea is of course the combination of the wireless information
transmission idea and the
telephone idea.
Next, the principle is not all new ideas are on a par. Creativity is not simply
just come up
with new and imaginative ideas. The kind of creativity that is valued is the
ability to come up
with new and useful ideas. The ideas that creates a new trend or new style
that makes some
impact. Creativity could be divided into two element such as cognitive
and artistic creativity.

The artistic creativity consist in the creation of artwork and expressing

someone ideas and
emotions through various forms of art. Then, cognitive

SEC:A

2015-EL

creativity is a matter of coming up with

solutions to practical or theoretical problems. It is includes for example
creating a new scientific
theory, or maybe lauching a new commercial product. Cognitive creativity
has two parts which
is the generation of new ideas and modification of new ideas. Let take one
example, in order to
build a rocket that flies to the moon, one should not violate logic or the laws
of physics. The
evaluation of any proposal to solve a problem must involve good critical
thinking.
This is another principle of creativity which is creativity is enhanced
by the ability to
detect connections between ideas. We should see a connection
between the subject matter
one is interested in and other subjects. For example, consider the so-called
"fastskin" swimsuits
that was introduced by the company Speedo around 1996. They take the
key consideration in
designing a swimsuit for athletes is to reduce some amount of drag
over the surface of the
swimsuit. Besides, the company's researchers noticed that sharks are able
to move very fast in
water. This is because of V-shaped ridges. Researchers designed
swimwear fabric emulating
sharkskin that produced less drag and turbulence. So, if we want to
be creative, we must be
ready to find out connections between different areas means that we
should have a wide
knowledge base. Studying is not simply remembering bits and pieces of
unrelated information.
We should make sure that we look at the information we have from
different angles,
reformulate them systematically in a way to achieve better understanding

QUOTES OF SOME FAMOUS PEOPLE

ON CREATIVITY :
1)Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the
secret of great creative people Leo Burnett
2) You cant wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a
club Jack London
3) Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what
you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what
you will George Bernard Shaw
4) Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the
thinks you can think up if only you try Dr. Seuss
5) Creativity is more than just being diff erent. Anybody can plan
weird; thats easy. Whats hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making
the simple, awesomely simple, thats creativity Charles Mingus
6) Creativity comes from a confl ict of ideas Donatella Versace
7) Dont think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. Its selfconscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You cant try to do
things. You simply must do things Ray Bradbury
8) Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative
people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because
they didnt really do it, the just saw something. It seemed obvious
to them after a while Steve Jobs
