FUNCTIONAL COMPARISON OF SYSTEMS

1. Direct Refrigerant Systems are more suitable for use in smaller structures such as
residences or small commercial establishments.
2. All Air Systems are better suited for building having relatively low cooling load.
Whereas tall buildings with large glass area and high lighting levels can be more
economically served by some type of Air-Water Systems.
3. From a functional point of view a single duct All-Air Cooling System is best
however the best system for a particular application should be selected after
analysis of all factors a) functional b) physical c) economic
4. Functional factors which effect comfort are i) DBT ii)RH iii)AIR MOVEMENT iv)
AIR CLEANLINESS v)ODOUR REMOVAL vi) NOISE vii) RADIATION EFFECTS
5. Each system under consideration should be listed and given a comparative rating
with respect to each of the above items.
6. Other factors determining the best system for a specific building will include:
i.

Building height

ii.

Building configuration (shape)

iii.

Glass to wall surface ratio

iv.

Building loads (BTU/ft2)

v.

Building orientation

vi.

Energy availability

vii.

Installation costs

viii.

Operating costs

ix.
