1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers hollow loadbearing concrete masonry units made from
portland cement, water, and mineral aggregates with or without the inclusion of other
materials. There are three weight classifications for concrete masonry units: (1) normal
weight, (2) medium weight, and (3) lightweight.
3. Materials
3.1 Cementitious
Materials-Materials
shall conform to the following applicable
specifications:
3.1.1 Portland Cement-ASTM Specification C ISO, for Portland Cement. 2
3.1.2 Blended Cements-ASTM Specification C 595, for Blended Hydraulic Cements. 2
3.1.3 Hydrated Lime, Type S-ASTM
Specification C 207, for Hydrated Lime for
Masonry Purposes. 2
3.1.4 Pozzolans-ASTM
Specification
C 618, for Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined
Natural Pozzolans for Use in Portland Cement Concrete. 3
3.2 Aggregates-Aggregates shall conform
to the following specifications, except that
grading requirements shall not necessarily
apply:
3.2.1 Normal Weight Aggregate.s-ASTM
Specification C 33, for Concrete Aggregates.:I
2. Classification

3.2.2 Lightweight
Aggregates-ASTM
Specification C 331, for Lightweight Aggregates for Concrete Masonry Units. <I
3.3 Other
Constituents-Air-entraining
agents, coloring pigments, integral water repellents, finely ground silica, etc., shall be
previously established as suitable for use in
concrete and either shall conform to ASTM
standards where applicable, or shall be shown
by test or experience to be not detrimental to
the durability of the concrete.
4. Physical Requirements
4.1 At the time of delivery to the work site
the units shall conform to the physical requirements prescribed in Table 2.
4.2 The moisture content of Type I concrete masonry units at time of delivery. shall
conform to the requirements prescribed in
Table 1.
s.
5.1 Face-shell (FS1j and web (W1j thicknesses shall conform to the requirements
listed in Table 3.
NOTE 4-Special unit designs involving corrosion-resistant metal ties between face shells may be
approved provided tests show such ties are structural1y~qpivalent to the minimum specified concrete
webs to stiffness, strength, and anchorage to the
face shells.

II Average of measurements on 3 units taken at the thinnest point, when measured as described in Methods
C 140, Sections 15 and 17 (b).
b Sum of the measured thickness of all webs in the unit, multiplied by 12, and divided by the length of the
unit.
This face-shell thickness (F'ST) is applicable where allowable design load is reduced in proportion to the
reduction in thickness from basic face-shell thicknesses ShOWI1.
