he John F. Scarpa Foundation has announced the

donation of $1 million to the Cumberland County
Technical Education Center Foundation. In recognition of the gift, the school will be renamed The John F.
Scarpa Technical Education Center of Cumberland County.
The leaders of Cumberland County along with the
Cumberland County Board of Vocational Education and
its Foundation Board have placed a tremendous opportunity and challenge in front of this community, said John
F. Scarpa, Vineland native and founder of the Scarpa
Foundation. With the completion of CCTEC,
Cumberland County has an exciting new educational
option beyond anything seen in the region. This donation
helps to make the most of this opportunity.
We are thrilled and honored by Mr. Scarpas generous donation, said Daniel G. Vivarelli Sr., board president of the Cumberland County Board of Vocational
Education. Having a benefactor like Mr. Scarpa will
enable countless students from Cumberland County to
pursue and achieve their dreams.
The funds from the Scarpa Foundations donation will
be specifically directed to:
Provide college scholarships for ongoing educational
opportunities for qualified youths.
Provide ongoing support for program expansion.
Encourage others to support CCTEC by creating a
Development Plan to raise additional scholarship funds
along with the CCTEC Foundation Board by offering
premium naming opportunities throughout the facility.
he Vineland High School Marching Clan,

Band-Aides of Vineland, and Cavalcade
of Bands presented the 2016 Vineland
High School Marching Show on Saturday,
November 5, at Gittone Stadium in Vineland.
The event featured high school marching
bands from Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Buena
Regional, Cinnaminson, Clayton, Delsea
Regional, Glassboro, Millville, Mount Pleasant,
Penns Grove, and Riverside Township. The
Vineland High School Marching Clan performed
their 2016 Field Show Picture This in exhibition.
SNJ Today filmed the marching band performances and will air them on Channel 22 in

Plevins Chosen for Presidential

Volunteer Service Award
Stephen I. Plevins, son of Maurice and Murial Plevins, on
behalf of the Board of Directors at the Volunteer Center of
South Jersey, has been chosen to receive the Presidential
Volunteer Service Award, which is the highest level service
award in the nation. He has been commended by the
President for his work with the Vineland Salvation Army. He
has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the
President for his service throughout his lifetime.
This year, Plevins received a Caring Hearts reward from the Vineland Salvation
Army. He also was commended by the Puerto Rican Festival Committee as being
an Outstanding Vineland citizen for his accomplishments.
Leukemia and Lymphoma Donation Honors Two

Ronald K. Brownlee is honoring, in memory, his son, Ronald
K. Brownlee, Jr. who lost his battle with AML leukemia after a
courageous fight at the age of 22.
Also honored: John Hyland,
who is the co-founder and managing director of Private Advisor
Group. John is a two-time survivor of AML leukemia. He is a
dedicated trustee of The
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,
and a triathlete who completed
the Ironman 11 times since
2000. John Hyland currently resides in Morristown, NJ with his family.

Hispanic Student Leadership Conference
M.E.N. Scholars Meet with Morgan University

On Friday, October 28,
students from Morgan State
Universitys M.I.L.E. program
met with members of the
Delsea Regional High School
M.E.N. Scholars program for
a day of round table discussions and social interactions. The Morgan M.I.L.E. is
an initiative of Morgan State
University in Baltimore,
Maryland, structured to
enhance graduation and retention rates for male students. They have uniquely
partnered with Delsea Regional High School's M.E.N. Scholars, a chosen group
of junior and senior African American male students, in an effort to support,
mentor and guide them in their academic and personal endeavors.
During the day, the Morgan State students met with district and building
administration, toured the school, enjoyed a performance by the Step Team,
shared lunch with the M.E.N. Scholars and staff members.
At the end of the day, they participated in discussions with students at Delsea
Regional Middle School who will be candidates for the M.E.N. Scholars program
when they get to the high school.
The Morgan State University students and the Delsea students are looking forward to their next meeting at Morgan State University in Baltimore in the spring.

Cumberland County College hosted the

28th Annual Hispanic Student Leadership
Conference (HSLC) on Friday, October 28.
Delsea took 12 juniors and seniors, with
chaperones Spanish teacher Michele Hill and
School Counselor Brian D'Ottavio.
This years conference theme was
Todays Vision = Tomorrows Reality. The
students were inspired by leaders who have
achieved their goals through hard work, having a vision, planning ahead, taking risks and
pursuing their education. They also heard
from CCC President, Dr. Yves Solomon-Fernandez, who shared her personal story
of struggle, sacrifice and achievement. As part of the conference, students also
attended workshops on financial aid, leadership/communication, career planning
and job search- and the power of having a college education.

Hendershott Promoted
Dawn Payne, a 5th grade teacher

at Compass Academy Charter School
in Vineland, was one of 22 educators
selected by the New Jersey Science
Teachers Association (NJSTA) to
attend a weeklong professional development workshop held at Rowan
University in Glassboro titled
Preparing Elementary Teachers to
Implement the Next Generation
Science Standards (NGSS).
The NGSS and the New Jersey Model Curriculum promote scientific literacy and served as the foundation for the workshop activities. The participants plan to incorporate many of these engaging,
hands-on, science activities that were developed during this summer experience into their science programs at their schools.
Participating teachers constructed content and grade-specific
units that integrated the Life, Physical, and Earth/Space
Sciences disciplines. To develop the units, teachers were guided
by NJSTA educators to create lessons that focus on authentic
experiences by which learners can advance their abilities to
build, test, and refine knowledge. These lessons will change the
focus of instruction from basic identification of concepts to
explanations that make sense of scientific phenomenon.
Ms. Payne also received an invitation to attend the New
Jersey Science Convention (NJSC) in October, where she was be
recognized as an NJSTA Simmons Scholar. This professional
development opportunity for New Jersey teachers was part of an
ongoing initiative of NJSTA and its Maitland P. Simmons
Memorial Award.
The mission of NJSTA is to promote excellence and innovation
in science teaching and learning for all.
During a ceremony on Thursday in City Council

Chambers at Vinelands City Hall, a pair of firefighters
were promoted while surrounded by their colleagues,
friends and family. Francisco Tony Saltar (right) was
promoted to Captain of Vineland Fire Company 6 and
John Hendershott took Saltars place as Lieutenant.
Saltar fills the vacancy created when Anthony
Baldosaro retired after 30 years as a career firefighter
in Vineland.

Saltar joined the fire department as a volunteer at

Station #4 in 1988, became a career firefighter with
station #6 in 1994, and was promoted to Lieutenant
in 2007. Hendershott began as a volunteer with
Station #3 in 1997 and was hired as a career
Firefighter at Station #6 in 2005.
The pair recited their oaths, administered by
Vineland Mayor Ruben Bermudez, with Fire Chief
Robert Pagnini and City Fire Director Robert Ternay
providing words of wisdom and congratulations to the
men, who were also joined by their wives and children
during the ceremony.

ver the last two weeks, more

than a thousand people have
connectedor reconnected
with Downtown VinelandThe
Ave. On Monday, October 17, the longawaited groundbreaking of the Landis
Square Senior Project took place. Nearly
100 residents came out to cheer on this
redevelopment effort that will add 78
apartments to support the growing desire
to live downtown but also offer 8,000
square feet of retail space.
Our Rebranding Launch Party, hosted at
the Landis Theater three days later, saw
over 350 people come out to hear about the
new brand of Landis Avenue and to find
out what our office envisions for
Downtown. The evenings success left
everyone feeling very optimistic about the
future of The Ave.
Mauros on the Ave, Vinelands newest
bar/restaurant located adjacent to the
Landis Theater, hosted the first of a series
of comedy shows on the same night as the
Rebranding Launch Party. Over 100 guests
enjoyed a night of comedy on The Ave. The
Eastern Gateway to our Downtown was
surely busy!
Less than a week later, we hosted our
annual A Taste of Vineland event. Over 200
people came out to support our event and
were treated to delicious samplings of some
of Vinelands best restaurants. People are
already making plans to attend the event
next year.
That following Friday marked the season finale of our Fitness & Film in the
Scarecrow Challenge Contest

the winners of the Scarecrow
Challenge contest at its Pumpkin
Patch Party on Saturday, October 29
at the mini-parks in downtown
Vineland. Twenty-seven scarecrows
were entered into the contest, which
was open to Vineland public, private,
and parochial schoolspre-school
through 12th grade, as well as civic
organizations. During the monthlong
contest, done in partnership with the
Vineland Board of Education, the
entrants created the scarecrows,
which were then mounted on downtown lampposts. The public could
vote for their favorite online or on
paper ballots in select downtown
businesses. The three top winners

marked the fifth time our organization
partnered with the Vineland Health
Department to offer a free fitness class
(Graveyard Yoga this month) and a free
movie. (Hocus Pocus was the fan choice this
month). If you missed the fitness/movie
series, fear not. It will return in the spring.
The much-celebrated opening night of
the Bay Atlantic Symphony took place the
following evening at the Landis Theater
with over 550 people in attendance at a real
red-carpet gala event! The night kicked off
a five-concert series that the Symphony
will present at The Landisits new
Cumberland County performance home. If
you missed this one, be sure to get your
tickets for their holiday concert on
December 10 at Landistheater.com.
Earlier that day, we hosted a very successful Pumpkin Patch Party at southwest
mini-park. This free, family event drew
hundreds of residents who enjoyed activities such as pumpkin painting, balloon-pop
relay, magic shows and a pumpkin seedspitting contest and dancing with DJ Zach.
The winners of our scarecrow contest were
also announced at the party.
While the above illustrates some of the
larger events taking place on The Ave, plenty of other opportunities to be entertained
exist downtown. We challenge you to spend
some time on The Ave and see for yourself.

Launay describes what happened:

William Kidd, was lead to the gallows,
defiant to the end. The noose was placed
around his neck and the wood block
kicked out from beneath him. Although
the rope broke and Kidds life was spared
for a few moments, a second attempt put
an end to the brief career of one of the
most famous pirates in history.
Shortly thereafter, Kidds legend was
preserved in a broadside ballad, Captain
Kids [sic] Farewell to the Seas, or, the
Famous Pirate's Lament, which referenced the accumulation of some 200 bars
of gold and other wealth. It raised the
question of where that treasure might be
buried and increased its value in the imaginations of many.
The existence of a Kidd treasure
became credible with the discovery of a
buried stash belonging to the pirate shortly after his arrest. According to Launay,
the loot had been dug up on Gardiners
Island off the coast of Long Island, NY.
Kidd left it there in the care of Jonathon
[sic] Gardiner, who cooperated with
British authorities in retrieving it. Its
worth was valued at around 20,000
British pounds, Launay reports, which is
comparable to about one million dollars
today.

such locations as Long Islands
Hempstead Harbor and the Charles and
Thimble Islands off the Connecticut coast
as rumored U.S. locations that might contain the remainder of the treasure. Other
sources add Nova Scotias Oak Island as a
possibility. Peterson writes that the
Pennsylvania location of Marcus Hook is
also considered a site of pirate treasures,
although he doesnt identify Kidds as
being part of it.
Of all the U.S. areas affiliated with the
Kidd treasure, however, New Jersey seems
to be the prime location. Tales of the
renowned stash have abounded for centuries throughout the central and southern portion of the state, contributing to

ts generally believed that the notorious pirate Captain William Kidd,

after returning for the final time to
the American colonies in the late
1690s, buried his treasure when he
dropped anchor in the Raritan Bay to use
his New Jersey and New York City political connections and a portion of his loot to
buy protection from the British authorities hunting him for his crimes.
Kidd seems to have been successful in
his attempts to secure protection in the
New Jersey/New York area. As Michael J.

Hunting for the Buried Treasure of
Captain Kidd explains, It was common
practice for pirates to buy safety or pardons from corrupt colonial politicians.
But his luck ran out by the time he
reached Massachusetts and a governor
whose standards rose above the bribes
that had previously safeguarded him. Kidd
was arrested in Boston and set in motion
the mythology surrounding his legendary
buried treasure.
Kidd was imprisoned and eventually
sent to England to stand trial on charges
of piracy and of murdering William
Moore, a member of his crew. According
to online sources, the proceedings were
quick and denied Kidd a proper defense
since evidence was withheld and testimony skewed to the defendants disadvantage. According to Robert A. Peterson, in
his 1998 book Patriots, Pirates and Pineys:
Sixty Who Shaped New Jersey, Kidds
defense was that he had been forced to
commit acts of piracy by his mutinous
crew
Some historians contend that Kidds
backers had been embarrassed by the
charges and favored a conviction. Thats
exactly what they got, but not before Kidd
attempted to leverage his situation by
declaring that he had buried treasure
worth 40,000 British pounds in the
American colonies.
Launay reports that Kidd maintained
his innocence to the end, and promised to
retrieve his treasure to give it to his backers and the government if only they would
release him and give him a ship. Whether
he was telling the truth, or just trying to
save his neck, we will never know.
Captain Kidd was executed on the
morning of May 23, 1701, in London.

Walter R. Sweenie Todd, 87, of Millville,

passed away peacefully at home. Born in
Atlantic City, Walt had lived in Millville
since 1941. Walt was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War in Germany. He
was the owner of Todds Bicycle Shop in
Millville before joining the Millville Parks
and Public Buildings Department, working
in Maintenance. Sweenie was a member
of the American Legion Nabb Leslie Post
#82, Millville Eagles Aerie #1836, where he
was a Golden Eagle and the Millville VFW.
Rafael Roman, 60 of Vineland passed
away on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at
home. Born in New York, NY Rafael had
worked as a counselor for the Allentown
Health Bureau and had previously worked
for the Tropicana Casino, driving limos.
He enjoyed being a magician and DJing.
Carol A. Ayars, 69, devoted wife, mother,

and grandmother passed away peacefully
on Sunday morning (10/30/2016) with her
family by her side. Born in Bridgeton, she
has been a Millville resident since 1984.
Carol enjoyed arts and crafts, cake decorating, and playing video games with her
grandchildren. Her life revolved around
her family and she loved spending time
with them.
Joey Myers, age 25 of Millville, passed
away Sunday, October 30, 2016. Born in
Cape May Court House, Joey was raised in
Millville and was a lifelong resident. Joey
attended Millville High School and went
on to work for several different contractors
in the construction business.
Captain Daniel J. Francis, 65, of Cape May,
NJ passed away peacefully with his loved
ones by his side on Sunday, October 30,
2016. Daniel was born in Upper St. Clair, PA
on June 28, 1951 to Daniel V. and Marilyn
Francis. After a long areer in the United
States Coast Guard, Daniel achieved his
commercial Captains license and captained
vessels from New Orleans to Massachusetts.
He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and
loved spending time with his family.

Canine Obedience Classes Including AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Classes

After a summer of fun in the sun, Pinelands K-9 Club starts the next session
of Dog Training classes on Tuesday, November 8. Classes are held at the
Atlantic County 4-H center located on Route 50 between Mays Landing and Egg
Harbor City.
Early training and socialization are key to having a well-behaved dog.
Classes are open to all dogs, whether mixed breed or purebred, and include
puppy classes, Beginners, as well as competitive obedience training for Novice,
Open and Advanced. Fee for a six-week session is $120. Proof of inoculations is
required.

Barktoberfest, a fundraiser for Freedom

Farm Animal Rescue and a variety of other
local rescues, took place on Saturday,
October 22, at Pampered Pup Luxury Pet
Resort, located at 2709 Mays Landing
Road in Millville. B&B Animal Services
and Freedom Farm Animal Rescue partnered with Pampered Pup to host this
event. There was a pet costume contest as
well as a childrens costume contest with
wonderful prizes donated by Pampered
Pup and B&B Animal Services.
The pet costume contest winner was a
Pomeranian dressed up in a creative
homemade costume as the house from the
movie Up!. Second place went to Zelda, a
doggie daycare guest of Pampered Pup,
owned by Donna Jackson who was dressed
as a pirate. Third and fourth place went to
the pretty princess Isis and Captain
America dressed as his namesake. The
contest was judged in part by
NorEasterNick of SNJ Today, who offered
the children in the contest a tour of the
news studio.
The pumpkin painting was a family
favorite with local artist Jane Medio helping the children. Jane also painted several
pumpkins to look like some of the canine
guests.
The rescue animals from Freedom
Farm Animal Rescue were a popular addition to the event. In addition to Freedom
Farm Animal Rescue, TLC Animal Rescue,
HALT, J & Co, 5 Cs, and Sophias Grace
Foundation participated in the event and
many brought adoptable canines with
them. Even though each rescue has its own
unique attributes, they are all focused on
providing high quality homes to animals in
need and they will do everything they can

Park. The United Veteran's Council, in
conjunction with the City of Vineland, will
be having their Annual Veterans Day
Ceremony on at 11 a.m. at the Veteran's
Park, Park Avenue and the Blvd. After the
Ceremony, all in attendance are invited to
the Semper Marine Detachment 205,

was started by my grandfather, Angelo
DeRossi. It was passed on to my father,
Domenic DeRossi, and then to me,
Donald DeRossi. the company has
passed through three generations, due to
death or retirement.
In the beginning, the company
employed approximately 75 people. At
its peak, there were about 450 people
employed. Now, we employ 140 people
but we are in the process of hiring due
to an increase in our orders. The biggest
challenge the company faces is competing with companies in the South where
costs are lower.
Longevity is due to our quality, pride
in our work, hard work, timely deliveries,
and keeping our costs down. Success
depends upon the industry and the dedication of our employees.
Over the years, the company has had
guest conductor. Though the concert is

free, tickets are required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis by
calling the Stockton University
Performing Arts Center box office at

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13
Annual Veterans Day Program.
Pennsville Township Historical Society will
hold its Annual Veterans Day Program (1
p.m.) with guest speaker Alma Cole Pesiri
who will present a retrospective of the
USO (United Service Organizations). Alma
grew up in Pennsville, attended the
Pennsville Memorial School Class of 1954,
graduated from Salem High School Class
of 1958, and graduated from GoldeyBeacom School of Business Class of 1961.
Alma is a noted poet, journalist, photographer and writer. This is program is free
and open to the general public, in particular to service men and women both
many markers of growth. Until about

1940, the company made many difficult
styles of clothing, mostly menswear.
During World War II, it converted to making military uniforms. At the end of the
war, the company briefly merged with
another company, Top-O-Mart, which
lasted for about 10 years. The merger
was dissolved and DeRossi and Son Co.
started making military uniforms from
about 1952 until present.
In peak years of 1960s and 70s,
some 450 were employed. The company
has received many awards for exceptional quality and delivery from the U.S. government. The company, now with 140
employees, is in the process of expanding. However, with the rising cost of
doing business in the state of New
Jersey, it may become impossible to
continue to compete against companies
in other states where costs are lower.

Assistance for Veterans. Millville Public

Program is Ready, Vet, Go! hosted by
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden; to
help homeless and low income military
veterans with financial assistance and/or
housing. Veterans will be screened for eligibility. A counselor from Catholic
Charities will be available to talk to veterans. No appointment needed.
With the change of seasons, the Department of Veterans

Affairs (VA) would like to remind area veterans to notify their
VA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) of their plans in order to
ensure they receive consistent VA health care while traveling.
Veterans who are enrolled and receive health care with VA
will receive the same, consistent care at both their local VA
treatment site as well as an alternate VA site of care.
In order to help VA ensure veterans receive consistent care
while traveling, we ask that they provide their PACT with the
following information, preferably 4 to 6 weeks prior to departure, or as soon as they are aware of the trip:
travel destination(s), and temporary address
a valid telephone number
arrival and departure dates
specific care concerns

The PACT will contact the facilitys Traveling Veteran
Coordinator, who will assist in coordinating the veterans care
at the alternate facility. This coordination helps to prevent
any disruption in care.

veterans, including care for emergencies and after hours, visit
va.gov/HEALTHBENEFITS/access/seamless_care.asp.
Veterans are encouraged to register for My HealtheVet
prior to travel to enhance communication with their health
care team. Learn how at www.myhealth.va.gov.
Veterans who present at any VA facility who have not preregistered for the Traveling Veteran Program WILL NOT be
turned awaywhenever possible, their concerns will be
addressed on the same day.
