Irish Night offers up
traditional merriment
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
Saint Patricks Day doesnt
have to be the only day to cele-
brate Irish heritage. Come out
and celebrate Irish Night at the
Holy Family Church on Saturday,
Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
For four years, event coordina-
tor Shelia McGirl has set up Irish
Night in the hopes to bring a little
more Irish culture into Washing-
ton Township.
With a maximum capacity of
270 people, the annual event was
popular from the first year.
It has evolved into quite an
event. I refer to it as an indoor
Irish festival, McGirl said.
Vendors will be there to sell im-
ported products from Ireland.
Bagpipers and Irish step dancing
performed by members of the
Coyle Irish dancing school in
Philadelphia an award-winning
Irish step dancing school that has
been around for 30 years will en-
hance the cultural experience.
McGirl said the Irish step
dancers will dress in traditional
Irish step dancing garb.
To add to the Irish merriment,
the Philadelphia-based Irish rock
band, The Hooligans, will per-
form. DJ OMarc from My
Friends a DJ will play music in
between the bands sets.
The event will have an opening
prayer from Pastor Rev. Robert
Hughes. Following the pastors
prayer, a member of the Philadel-
phia Boys Choir will sing the
Irish National Anthem in Gaelic
and McGirl is singing the Ameri-
can National Anthem.
Its a fun evening of Irish cul-
ture, McGirl said.
The event is more than just cel-
ebrating a night filled with Irish
culture.
We sell out every year. It be-
came the major fundraiser, Mc-
Girl said.
Generous sponsorships from
local businesses and interested
participants allow McGirl and
event volunteers to be left with
the planning and ticket sales.
Once the sponsorships were
set, ticket sales turned into the
main focus, McGirl said.
As the event coordinator, Mc-
Girl does more than oversee the
event. She brings her grandmas
soda bread recipe to the table.
Irish soda bread is one of many
traditional foods. Mixes can be
purchased in the store, and
recipes can be found online for
Irish soda bread, but McGirls
recipe is her Grandma Noras
Irish soda bread recipe right
from Gort, Ireland.
The bread is sold at the event,
but the event sales are just touch-

The Washington Twp. Sun
During a meeting on Wednes-
day, Oct. 24, council approved six
items on the agenda.
The council approved a one-
year contract with Triad Associa-
tions an administrative agent
for Council on Affordable Hous-
ing (COAH) that oversees and
monitors affordable housing
units located throughout the mu-
nicipality.
Currently, the contract is set
for 62 percent rehabilitation and
38 percent financial assistance.
Rehabilitation of the properties
ranges from repairing leaking
roofs to landscaping, while 38 per-
cent is used to assist with mone-
tary struggles.
Vice president Chris Del Bor-
rello wants to further look into
evening out the breakdown of the
funds to make it more equal.
The funds may be better used
for financial assistance rather
than rehabilitation, Del Borrello
said.
The country is still in a major
recession and the funds are better
served financially aiding low-in-
come individuals, he said.
Business administrator Robert
Smith said he would reach out
COAH council to see if the break-
down can be modified.
Smith said the township cur-
rently has $190,000 allocated to-
ward COAH, and are projecting a
collection of $212,000 from Janu-
ary 2012 to the end of December
2018.
Council approved the agree-
ment between the township and
the Public Works Department,
and solicitation of bids for a two-
year contract for radio mainte-
nance for the police department
was also approved. Bids for the
maintenance will go out soon,
and the contract will take effect in
January, Del Borello said.
Township will also add the
Gloucester County Sentinel as an
official newspaper in order to
save approximately $6,000 to
$7,000 in tax sales advertising per
year.
The Sentinel is a weekly news-
paper delivered to the residents of
Washington Township as well as
Franklin, Monroe, Clayton, New-
field, Glassboro and Vineland.
Although the township is sav-
ing money on tax sales advertis-
ing by making the Sentinel an of-
ficial town newspaper, Del Borrel-
lo wants the council members to
look into publishing ordinance
information in a paper Washing-
ton Township residents have ac-
cess to.
The paper is geared toward
Franklin and Elk Township. For
transparency purposes, we need
to go with a paper the township
residence are more likely to
read, he said.
Smith said by approving the
resolution, the township is not

ing the surface of the story be-
hind the soda bread.
McGirl said members of the
church bring Grandma Noras
Irish soda bread to folks who are
unable to leave their home. The
group the Irish soda bread min-
istry goes out into the communi-
ty to distribute the soda bread to
people who might not be able to
get out on their own.
This is a great story of how
caring for others emerged from
the passing on of this family
recipe, she said.
Irish food, music, dancing and
a real taste of Irish heritage, are
crammed into one night of enjoy-
ment.
[Irish Night] not only cele-
brates a culture that is deep-root-
ed in our Catholic faith, McGirl
said.
The event promotes fellowship,
goodwill and community out-
reach, she said.
Ticket prices are $25 per per-

Election letters
Letters to the editor regarding the
November election are posted to our
website at www.washingtontwpsun.com.
We will continue to post letters to the
editor at our website up to election day.
T
he presidential and vice presi-
dential debates are over. Some
of the comments and issues
that received the most attention:
Big Bird.
Malarkey.
Binders of women.
A passive President Obama.
An aggressive President Obama.
Jeremy the college kid who was
promised a job.
Mitt Romneys kid wanting to punch
the president.
Horses and bayonets.
And a moderator who confused the
presidents name with that of a well-
known and now-deceased terrorist.
Indeed, these were some of the is-
sues that grabbed immediate atten-
tion. Some news outlets measured the
number of Tweets about them.
Fortunately, Tweets are irrelevant.
We cant really blame people for
their instant reactions when someone
launches a zinger or makes a mistake.
Its human nature. So is declaring a
winner, commenting on the candi-
dates demeanors and emotions and
otherwise taking instant notice of the
more obvious and entertaining mo-
ments of the debates.
But we give both the president and
Romney credit for bringing not only
passion (some might say too much pas-
sion) to the debates, but also a willing-
ness to exchange about real issues.
Those paying only a little attention to
the debates couldnt help but see true
differences in the candidates, their
plans if they are elected and their ap-
proach to governing.
The two seldom agreed (except, per-
haps, on more issues in the last debate
over foreign policy). They punched and
counter-punched. Each stood his
ground. And both set forth dramatical-
ly different visions for the nation.
We have less than a week to go be-
fore Election Day and a hotly contested
race, at least with the popular vote. We
also have a clear idea of what each can-
didate will do if he is elected. While
the quips got the spotlight, both candi-
dates did a good job of delivering
meaningful messages.
in our opinion
Debates are done
At the least, voters now can see clear differences between the candidates
Debates deliver
Zingers got a lot of attention, but both
candidates delivered their messages.

The staff of Thomas Jefferson
Elementary School used the back-
drop of a sun-soaked September
day to remember the life and con-
tributions of special education
teacher Margie Bucca and
to dedicate a bench in her memo-
ry.
Bucca passed away from com-
plications of breast cancer in
July 2009, following a 15-year stint
at the school.
The bench is in a peaceful
place right outside the third-
grade classrooms, said Jeff Pol-
lock, former Thomas Jefferson
principal who is now serving in
the same capacity at Hurffville
Elementary School.
It is a place where we all can
go and sit and remember Margie
and feel closer to her, he contin-
ued. She touched all of us in a
special way and will always be in
our hearts forever.

Washington Township High
School students enrolled in the
new art course, digital photogra-
phy, recently took a look
through their hand-made cam-
eras.
Each student created a camera
obscura out of a shoebox and was
able to view bright scenes on a
screen inside the box.
Light enters the box through a
small hole on one end, and the
scene projects on the screen,
upside down, just like a real cam-
era.
Students then experimented
with moving the screen closer to
and further away from the small
hole of light, representing differ-
ent camera lenses.
Ms. Kirsten Smith and Ms.
Lauren Jackson teach the digital
photography course.
