1.0 Introduction
In the early years of Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), seven flagship applications were
introduced to accelerate the objectives of Vision 2020. To speed up MSCs evolution, the
Malaysian government has set up seven multimedia applications which are the building blocks
for creating technologically advanced implementations. These seven flagship applications were:
1. Electronic Government which aims to reinvent public services using multimedia and
information technology. The people of Malaysia are to witness changes in ways the
Government interacts with businesses and citizens.
2. Research & Development Cluster which helps to ensure that the MSC is an attractive
location for companies to develop next generation multimedia technologies and
innovations.
3. Multipurpose Card that radically improves the ease with which Malaysians conduct
transactions with the Government and private companies.
4. Tele health that enhance the quality of health care for its citizens. The delivery of health
services is to dramatically change via seamless availability of health information and
Virtual Health Services.
5. Worldwide Manufacturing Web that seeks to position Malaysia as the manufacturing
hub in the region. These initiative aims to create an optimal environment for
manufacturing and service companies to deliver value added services and products to the
customers.
School project is to produce a technologically literate work force that can think critically, creative and innovative.
This is important to make sure that they are prepared to participate fully in the global economy of the 21 st
century. Next, is to produce a well-rounded person by emphasizing intellectual, emotional,
spiritual and physical growth. Apart from that, the objective of the Smart School project is to
democratize education by offering equal access for learning opportunities and accommodating
different learning abilities, styles and paces. In addition, smart school is launched to provide
opportunities to enhance individual strengths and abilities by offering broad curriculum that
consider the different capabilities and needs of all students. Lastly, by implementing smart school
project can increase the participation of stakeholders.
thinking skills and encourage them to improve their language proficiency. Then, the smart
school pedagogy will seek to make learning process more interesting, motivating, stimulating
and meaningful by accommodating different learning abilities of students so as to boost their
performances and fostering a classroom atmosphere that is compatible with different
teaching-learning strategies. Besides, smart school assessment system will be distinctly
different from other normal school system. Smart school assessment will be flexible and
learner-friendly while assuring the quality of the assessment information by using multiple
approaches and instruments. This will lead to living certification which will be a continued
improvement on a lifetime basis. The scope of assessment of smart school is holistic that
covers not only achievement but readiness, progress and aptitude. Lastly, smart school will
emphasize on a new teaching-learning strategies that will accommodate the different in
students abilities and needs so that they can realize their capabilities and potential.
is Malay and English with confident. So, one way to overcome this problem is by giving the
teachers an intensive training in ICT to enhance thinking skills and creativity.
Another challenge that we have to face is about the internet coverage. School.Net online
which has been provided by government has a lot of problems. With a speed of 1 mbps, it is
impossible for the whole school of at least 800 students and teachers to use the internet
access without any problems. Moreover, problem regarding the internet access which is too
slow always troubled the students to surf the internet. Therefore, the Ministry of Education
has stopped the School.Net online service in stages and introduced 1Bestari.Net to replace
the old network. 1Bestari.Net access is being provide to students via Wi-Fi but the problem
still arise when it rains as the internet access will be interrupted.
Next, in multimedia infrastructure aspect, Smart School demands a heavy investment
on it. The hardware would include computers, video and voice conferencing equipment while the
software will comprise word processors, spreadsheets, networking software and e-mail software.
All of these technological infrastructures are highly cost thus our government can only provide a
limited amount of these facilities. Furthermore, the presence of technician at each school is
important to monitor all the infrastructures. This is essential to ensure the optimum utilization of
the facilities. Apart from that, one of the challenges that we faced when implementing smart
school project is regarding the involvement of parents. Most parents are busy with their work so
that they can provide a better life for their children. So, many parents nowadays tend to spend
less time to monitor their children progress in school. Parents should guide and encourage their
children by participating in school activities to understand more about the smart school concept.
6.0 Conclusion
In a conclusion, in order for Malaysia to fulfill the vision of 2020, our Ministry of Education
intends to transform our educational system. This vision will be achievable only with
technologically literate and critically thinking work force which prepared to participate fully
in the global economy of the 21st century. Therefore, our government has invested a total of
RM 7 Billion to date on Smart School initiatives including PPSMI, computer lab at school
and School.Net. Malaysian Smart School project gives many benefits to our educational
system. So, everyone must give a good cooperation to achieve the objectives of smart school.
By implementing this project, we can produce a technologically literate students that can
think critically and creative so that they can survive in future. Besides, with new teaching
strategies, the learning process will be more interesting and stimulating thus can boost
students performances.
