Task Reflections

The document describes several classroom routines and procedures observed by a student teacher. These include taking attendance in the morning by calling students' names, telling a story at the end of each day, doing a writing activity in the morning, having "breaks" for a sick student, using hand claps to signal transitions between activities, reviewing animals and vocabulary words, and having students sit on the carpet before class. The student teacher reflects that these routines help reinforce content, engage students, build community, and structure the classroom day. Implementing effective routines will positively impact student learning by providing predictability and maximizing instructional time.

Task 1: Diagnostic Assessment Interview

Interview Questions
1. What diagnostic assessment has taken place this semester?
2. When did this occur?
3. What types of assessments were conducted? (written, oral, practical,
etc.)
4. Who developed these assessments?
5. Who conducted the assessments? (classroom teacher, Arabic teacher,
classroom assistant, etc.)
6. Were the assessments completed by students individually?
7. What information did you hope to get from the assessments?
8. What decisions did you make based on the assessments?
9. How did you group your students? (same/different academic levels,
friendship groups, similar interests, etc.)
10. Do the groups change for different learning subjects/topics?

-:The Answers
1

Gina McGillivray
Teacher in Year 1
2 One math test 3 weeks ago. Tested on what we have taught
already. Carried out test in groups as the children couldnt read it
by themselves so I read it to them. The children had a number line
to help.
Just done INCAS testing which is 6 tests that test a range of
things e.g. math, reading, spelling, thinking skills.
Assessing every lesson though. If they have understood something
we can move on, if not we can go over it again.
3 Math test about 3 weeks ago in 3 groups
INCAS testing 2 weeks times
Ongoing assessment all the time.
4 Abacus math test written
INCAS on the computer and children clicking the right answer or
typing it.
Ongoing assessment is me looking in childrens books, having
conversations with them, writing what they say on post-it notes.

5 The school decided we do the Abacus test. Abacus evolve is a

company which has developed in England. They can provide planning,
resources and the test.
INCAS the head of the school decided that everyone in the
school would be doing it.
6 Abacus did it by themselves. They have to think of the answers
by themselves.
INCAS on the own we dont help.
On-going assessment I work with them in the class and if they
needed help I know that they need more work in that area.
7 Assessments are to see if I was right in my judgment. They should
be assessed all the time not just in a test. As a teacher, we know
what they can and cant do.
8 It helps me plan the following lessons and makes me think Do they
need extra support? Do they need pushing on more?
9 Abacus Maths groups I know that the LA would go slower so I
kept them together on the table. The HA and MA were split around
the classroom and I showed them where to write.
Not in the test In maths I split into 3 groups but in the LA group,
if I have an extra adult she works with 3 children who need more
support than the others.
In English when writing and reading, it is ability grouped but when
do speaking and listening activities, I try and mix them up so they
have good role models to listen to and learn from them.
10 Groups do change. In English there are 3 groups and English 4. I do
move children around too. E.g. on Tuesday in math, one child found
subtracting hard so the next day I moved her to the group below
to give her more support/practice.
11 Start by talking to the child was there anything troubling them?
Are they finding something hard? I use Class Dojo to lose points
and if continued I would go to the Deputy Head and then after
that, the parents. If it was very serious I would talk to the
parents.
12 I would think why they were off task. If they were bored, I would
have to think of something to engage them. If it was too easy I
would need to try and challenge them more and if it was too hard, I
would need to support them more.
13 We have a couple in our class. In phonics, I email their parents with
extra words. Again in math, I send home extra tasks. I would send
home a message saying your child was confident in this today, could

you try this at home. I would tell them what to do at home too! I
like to make these more of an investigation.
End of interview thank you

.
After the Task - Reflection
Reflect on the interview and the information gained about
diagnostic assessment from your MST. Consider how/why you
would implement diagnostic assessment in a UAE primary
classroom in the future. Explain how this practice will affect
.student learning in a primary class

First the diagnostic assessment mean is a type of

assessment which examines what a student knows and can
do prior to a learning program being implemented.
Assessment of students' skills and knowledge upon entry to
the program provides a baseline against which to assess
progress. When I was doing the interview with my MST I saw
that she have a professional way to evolution the level of
the students. So she use the diagnostic assessment when
she teach and do the activities for different levels of
students. Also in her tasks so example if the students feels
boring for some tasks she think of something new to engage
them. So in the future I will use the diagnostic assessment
with my students because its help me to know the each
level of the students and what they need exactly. Also we
can thinking about the criteria for success and the
achievement of curriculum expectations. By design
questions that student be able to answer it by the end of
learning. It's also help me to determine where individual students are in
their acquisition of knowledge and skills. This diagnostics assessment will make a
positive effect in the student learning because its will identify a students needs and
abilities and the students readiness to acquire the knowledge and skills outlined in
the curriculum expectations.

I think this

I will use this

when the all

I will adjust this

I will use this

routine in the
future in my class
after I teach them
English I will

stick it on the

I will tell them

In the future
in my class
when I will
teach I will
bring carpet
in the middle
of my class
and say to

each one will
talk about
himself.
Because I
think this will
help to have
more

If you had to

you adjust this
routine and why

After the Task - Reflection

Choose 3 best practices you observed during your time in school.
Reflect on these and consider why you could implement these in a
UAE primary classroom in the future. Explain how these practices
will affect student learning in a primary class.

I will choose three practices which is the writing and

transition and set on the carpet. There are a three kind of
routines that my MST was doing in her class with students
and also me. So in the future when I will be a teacher I will
use this routine with my students. Because each on of this
routine have a big benefit for the students and teacher. Now
days I will implement these in my class so for the writing
this routine will help the student's to improve their writing
skills and help them to think and use their mind to create a
creative sentences. So for me I will give them every day an
empty paper and pencil to review what they learn yesterday.

This will help me to evaluation the student if he understand

or no. For the second routine which is the transition and its
clap hands I see my MST was doing this transition with her
students and its was good. In the future I will use this
because its help me to organize the groups and when I do
the clap hands this will also help to inform the group that
the time is finish. For the last routine which is set on the
carpet this routine I want to use it in my classroom. Because
its mean when the students attend the class before they go
to set on the carpet I will tell them to set on the carpet and
each one of them will say about he doing yesterday. It will
.make a positive effect on the student's learning

Task 3: Literacy Strategies

Guided reading

English

Phonics

After the Task - Reflection

Choose 3 best practices you observed during your time in school.
Reflect on these and consider why you could implement these in a
UAE primary classroom in the future. Explain how these practices
will affect student learning and reading levels in a primary class.
When I was in teaching practice , I observed with my MST
her classes and I liked this these classes and its English ,
Phonics and the guided reading. These in my opinion are
very important classes because its help the students in
many ways. So we have the English class which about new
information they learn in each day. So its include how the
student's create a sentences and learn vocabulary word. For
the phonics my MST teach them and review for them every
day and when they finish with each sound she give them
homework and stick the sound on the well. For the guided
reading my MST was doing every day with her students
between the groups. So she had different story for guided
reading in depending on the student's level. In the future
when I will be a teacher I will do what my MST doing
because she was evolution her students and she know what
she must do with each students. These practice will make a
.positive effect on the students
