Problem Solving Using Linear Programming

The factory produces two drinks that require syrup, vitamins, and flavoring in different amounts. The manager must decide how much of each drink to make to maximize profit, given constraints on the ingredients. At point A, producing 250L of energy drinks and 750L of refresher drinks maximizes total income of RM850 by using the available ingredients efficiently within the constraints.

Situation:

A factory produces two types of drinks, an energy drink and a refresher

drink.
Each drink requires syrup, vitamin supplement and concentrated
flavouring as shown in the table.
Energy Drink
Refresher Drink
Availabities

Syrup
0.25L
0.25L
250L

Vitamin Supplement
0.4 units
0.2 units
300 units

Concentrated Flavoring
30cc
20cc
4500cc

Problem:
The factory manager needs to decide how much of each drink to make, so
that maximum profit is obtained.
The selling price: Energy drink RM1 & Refresher drink RM0.80
Let

x = 1 litre of energy drink

y = 1 litre of refresher drink

Constraints
0.25x + 0.25y 250
0.4x + 0.2y 300
6x + 4y 4500

x + y 1000
x + y 1500
3x + 2y 2250

Objective Function
Let

z = total income
z = x + 0.8y
At point A, x = 250, y = 750
Total income, z
750 (0.8)

= 250 +

= 850
The factory manager needs to
produce 250L of energy drinks
& 750L of refresher drinks to
maximize the profit.
