Trend Lines
TEKS
8.5 Proportionality. The student applies mathematical process standards to use proportional and
non-proportional relationships to develop foundational concepts of functions. The student is expected
to:
D. use a trend line that approximates the linear relationship between bivariate sets of data to make
predictions;
Essential Question(s)
What meaning can be extracted from a data set?
Understanding
Data is used to make
generalizations and predictions
regarding population.

Trend Line A line close to most of the data points with approximately half the data points above and
half the data points below.

Warm-up:
Have students review the previous days content using the warm up question.
Correct answer: B
Procedure:
Student Notes Trend Lines
Problem 1: Have the students use the spaghetti strand to help draw the trend line on the scatterplot.
Trend lines help us make predictions about the data.
Trend lines can help us make predictions in 3 ways
1. Predict a y value on the graph given an x value.
2. Predict a x value on the graph given an y value.
3. Predict future data off the given graph.
Parts C-E give an example of each type of prediction. Possible solutions are shown below.
C: About $12.50
D: About 3 pounds
E: About $24.00

Gr 8 Unit 5 Trend Lines

Problem 2: Have students practice drawing trend lines using their spaghetti strand. Have
them show their trend lines to a partner and discuss how they determined where to draw it.
Problem 3: Use problem 3 as a preparation for
students to work the pair check independently
partner.
Scaffold the questioning by having students
their trend line and then compare the trend
with a partner. Then, do the same with parts
you walk around checking student work on
papers. Possible solutions are shown below.

Pair Check Trend Lines

1. Pair students up for this activity. Have them define Person A and Person B. For each set of
questions, students will be looking at the same graph and making predictions. Students should
work their corresponding question, and then trade papers to check their partners work and sign on
their paper. Correct answers are shown below.

Extension Trend Lines

1. In this extension, students can learn how to construct scatterplots on the graphing calculator and
make predictions by calculating a linear regression for a set of linear data.
Example 1:
A. Have the students create a scatterplot on their calculator using the data in the table and
create a trend line using Linear Regression on their calculators using the steps listed on the
student handout. Show students how to look in the table to predict this amount using the
trend line.
