Importance of the subject

Apply in our daily conversation the principles of correct thinking.


Develop reasoning ability especially during an argumentation.
Appreciate the art of reasoning.
Be able to form ideas or concepts, unite these concepts to form propositions
and to correlate propositions into correct premises to form valid conclusions.
Enables one to distinguish truth from error in the midst of conflicting and
confusing opinion.
Imbued with the great principles of true philosophy, one can become a better
character and a greater man.
Do you believe that wondering is the starting point of knowledge?
Wonderment is an attribute that characterizes all men, because it is part of
mans nature.

Philosophy
What is Philosophy?
Derived from 2 Greek words Philo meaning love and Sophia meaning
wisdom.
Aristotle viewed Philosophy as thinking which aims at maximum connected
truth about all available experiences.
The medieval scholastic school defined Philo as the science of ultimate causes of
things.

Philosophy is the search for meaning. It implies the persons to ask the whys
of things
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY
Metaphysics
- derived from the Greek words Ta Metphysika Biblia, meaning the
book that follows the physics book.
- Study of the existence of beings.
- concerned with being as being
- Ultimate meaning or purpose of things.
Epistemology

- derived from 2 Greek words Episteme meaning knowledge, and


Logos meaning study.
- study of human knowledge
- focuses to know the truth, conditions that makes knowledge possible.
Aesthetics
- derived from the Greek word Aisthetikos meaning sense of
perception
- Study of beauty and taste.
Ethics
- Study of morality
- What is morality?
- Morality is the distinction of what is right and wrong.
- It explores the nature of moral virtue and evaluates human actions.
Axiology
- Study of human values.
Cosmology
- Study of time, space and place.
- Deals with the study of the problems of the universe or inorganic
matters.
- It argues that whatever comes into existence is caused by something
that actually exists.
Theodicy
- studies the nature and existence of God.
Logic
- came from 2 Greek words Logos meaning study and Logike
meaning argument.
- The tool of reasoning.
- concerned with what is right and why it is so.
- It serves as the skeletal structure that enables the mind to grasp the
actual state of affairs of the word.
- It is the science and an art of correct thinking and reasoning.(CRUZ,
1995)
As a science:
- it is a body of a systematized knowledge,
- It investigates, discourse, expresses, systematizes, and demonstrates the
laws of correct thinking.
As an art:
- Guides man for reasoning so he can proceed with order and ease and
without error in the constructive activity of making of definitions of terms,
propositions and inferences.
As a correct thinking, correctness implies:
- Right order
- Reasonable procedure
- Valid inference

Consistency
- Necessary relationship
Thinking implies:
- Conformity to certain valid rules and laws
- Connectivity of truth about all available experiences.
Logic then is a philosophical tool that helps the in the formation of ideas, comparing
them through accurate judgment and inferring from them valid and sound
conclusions.
The importance of logic
1. The study of logic contributes to the quality of human life to improve human
civilization.
2. The art and science of creative thinking is helpful in the practice of any
profession, and in analyzing or making decisions in ones daily life.
3. Logic builds confidence in oneself, and provides man a sense of direction,
order validity, truth and accuracy.
4. Knowledge of logic helps in preventing the commission of errors.
5. It also helps us avoid making conclusions, based on false and biased
assumptions.
6. Knowledge of logic is also tested in argumentation and debate when and
where discussion for and against any issue is involved.
