Simn Bolvar and Venezuelas Stand Against Spanish Rule: 20

Annotations

Thesis Statement:

Simon Bolivar and the people of Venezuela took a stand against Spanish rule after Spain
had controlled the area since the 15th and 16th centuries. Although Bolivar and Venezuela
suffered many defeats to the Spanish, they eventually defeated them, resulting in the liberation of
Venezuela.

This primary source contained Simon Bolivars Proclamation to the people


of Venezuela. It highlighted his determination, goals and relationships with the
people; break the chains of servitude.

This collection of journals and documents gave me a first hand account of
life in Hispanic America during Simon Bolivars time. The author, who was a
traveller to Latin America, wrote a lot about Simon Bolivars style as a general.

artists opinion of Bolivar is during the revolution. It will also give the audience an
idea of what Bolivar looked like, and maybe some of his personality.

This is a speech that Simon Bolivar gave to the congress of Angostura,


stating that the people of New Granada are in a position worse than slavery. He
proposes a type of government similar to the United States, but also proposes a
hereditary senate, which is different. This primary source will help me better
understand the reasons why Venezuela wanted independence and the actions they
took to reach it.

Robertson, William Spence, excerpt from Rise of the Spanish-American republics, as told in the
lives of their liberators, Digital Public Library of America.

This excerpt is a map of the Spanish colonies on the eve of revolution. It will
help me better understand the area in which Simon Bolivar launched his
independence campaigns.

Bolivar promulgated the Decree of War to the Death on June 15, 1813. It
allowed any crime to be committed against the people born in Spain. This primary
source will better help me understand the steps that Venezuela took to gain
independence from Spain.

This article gave me more information on the liberation of Venezuela and


New Granada. For a period of time, there was a stalemate between American and
Spanish forces, but the Battle at Boyaca River was a decisive victory for Bolivar
and his supporters.

Enlightenment thinking was a major factor in Bolivars revolutionary movement.
After traveling to Europe, Bolivar was greatly influenced by Enlightenment
thinking and it a big part in his later decision to revolt against Spain.
