BLURB
Lillys future will be defined by a letter. Her dream is to pursue a career in
the one thing she loves music. She learnt to play the violin at a young age,
but when her father died, she had to make the decision between her home
and her dream. 4 years later, Lily has applied to the most prestigious music
school in Britain. In a family that barely scraping by and hardly any lessons
behind her, the only thing she has to rely on for her last chance at success
is her persistence and her talent. Her story will be told through flashbacks
to the most pivotal parts of her story, told from the moment she gains her
reply.

OUTLINE
The story is introduced with the characters Lilly and her Mother. Early
in the morning her mother finds a sleepless lilly keeping busy by
cleaning the kichen. The plot is introduced as the two charcters discuss
Exposition the her future as they both wait for the admissions letter to arrive that
defines whether she gained her place to the school.

During their conversation, a flashback is used to show the memory of

her friend Isabel and her talking to each other about her decision to quit
the violin lessons she has had since three year old, or leave the town
- and friends she had since she was born.

The scene flashes forward to the moment the letter comes through the door.
Lilly's mum retrieves the letter, gives it too her and leaves her alone. Whilst
holding the letter, Lilly has another flashback to the moment of her audition.
whilst in the waiting for the turn, Lilly does her pre stage ritual, when her
Conflict string breaks.

Her character begins to panic when her name is called. Lilly quickly turns to
Isabel and her mother, as her mother goes to tell the attendant, Isabel tries to
comfort her. Her mother returns with another violin and tells they had another
- spare. Lilly tells her she cant do it on another violin, because her's was
previously owned by her father.

Her name is called again, and Lilly takes a deep breath before entering on
the stage. She anounces her name, takes a deep breath and begins to play.
The music begins to fade out to the soudscape of her character sitting alone
Resolution in the kitchen. Lilly opens the letter before the drama ends on a cliff hanger
FORMAT
Last Chance is an engaging story about one of the most pivotal moments in
a young girls life. Not only is this drama engaging but also adaptable. The
drama is made with the capability of being both a standalone drama and a
series. This means that when successful, One Chance can explore all the
pivotal moments in Lilys life such as love, her career and family. This
means that by leaving the drama on cliff-hanger, it will encourage the
audience to watch the next episode to gain the answers to the first.

CHARACTERS
Lilly:
When Lilly turned 14 her father died of a heart attack leaving her stay at home
mom and her alone. She had been born and lived in the same house her entire live,
but even her fathers life insurance isnt enough to sustain they lived - used to live.
Lilly has to make a decision to either give up her home, her school and her friends,
or the one thing she loves most in the world. Lilly makes the decision to stop her
professional violin lessons, knowing that she might be giving up her future. 4 years
later, Lilly has been given a second chance to study music at her dream school. But
even her persistence and self-progress may not be enough to get in, because this is
her last chance.

Claire:
Claires entire life has revolved around her daughter Lilly. All shes every wanted is
for her daughter to follow her dream. But when an unforeseeable accident not only
takes her husband from her, it threatens to take her. Claire try to step up and get a
job, giving up nearly all of her time with Lilly, but her low income wage isnt enough
to sustain their lifestyle. Claire therefore has to watch as Lilly gives up her dream.
But when Lilly has another chance, Claire will do anything to help where she
couldnt before.

Isabel:
Isabel has known Lily and her mother claire since she can remember. Both of them
played as kids and grew up together. The worst thing to happen since she can
rember was having to watch Lilly as she lost her father and then make a horrible
decition between her music and her home and best friend. She watched as she
struggled to learn everything herself. Isabel tried to help as best she could, letting
her play the same song what seemed like 100rds of times before she almost felt as
if she could play it heself. Spending her lunch and breaks in the music room
instead of outside in the summer. So when she finds out Lilly has a chance at the
dream she gave up for Isabel and her mother, she must help.
ACTORS & ACTRESSES
I am using three voice actresses within my production. The story is set in southern
England meaning that the actresses that play Lilly and Isabel must have Southern well
pronounced accents. Southern accents are well pronunciated, meaning that it will be
easy for the audience to understand. The setting of the story in important within the
narrative, as it is the source of conflict between the cost of living and music tuition. The
two actresses that I have picked to play these characters are suitable for the roles
because of this. The actress who plays the main character Lilly within the story also
has a background in acting and has an acting qualification. These two character are also
the same age of the characters and can empathise with the situation meaning that the
acting will be stronger due to how relatable the character is.

Character Actor/Actress Qualification

Lilly Fatimah Nazir Fatimah is the same age as the main character and is
going through the same experience of university,
meaning she will be relatable. She also has a
qualification in acting, which is why she is tasked as
the main character.
Isabel Ellie Nuyts Ellie is the same age as the character and also is a
close friend of the main character meaning that the
relationship between the characters will be realistic.

Claire Hannah Hannah has a very mature voice, and a very

Mathers authoritative. This will give the impression of being a
mother and the is only used for one or two scenes.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The narrative of the radio drama is relatable to most audiences because of the
circumstances and the characters. Because of the storyline and plot and of Last Chance
that focuses on the challenges of getting into music school. Because of this, only certain
socio-economic audience category may find the video relatable, as further education
specifically musically is common within the categories C2, D and E. Although, even
though category E is the lowest socio-economic category, student may find the drama
relatable as they may have similar circumstances in their life. In terms of the adult socio-
economic target market, the drama will appeal to the groups A, B and C1. This is
because these categories are comprised of higher managerial, intermediate managerial
and supervisory work. People within these categories have higher paid jobs, meaning
that they are more likely to be effected by the drama, as they may have experienced it as
students. As said before, the drama targets students, and adults. This is because they will
be experiencing similarities if they are students between the age boundaries of 14-19
and parents, between the ages of 20 50. This means that it targets a large age range,
meaning higher broadcasting rates.
BUDGET
Category Cost Information
Writers 50 per day The writer cost fifty pounds per day. 10
pounds must also be added for the days they
are within the studio.
Actors 40 per actor The actors I am using are student actors.
Because of this, I can hire them for a low cost,
as they have no previous experience.

equipment)
Sound Effects 70 Download and buy any stock sound effects
needed from websites such as Audio Jungle.
TOTAL 400

It will cost 50 for a writer to be hired for one day. Because of this, I have a
budget of 150 to hire a writer for the script of the radio drama. Although I hope
to have the script written within one to two days, I have added another fifty
pounds to the budget, in case the writer needs to be hired for another day. For
the drama I am also using student actors. These actors are the same age as the
characters, and because of low experience level, they will work for extremely
small funds, or nothing at all. Although, I have set a budget of 120 (40 per actor)
which can be shared equally between the actors but the distribution may need to
be reviewed when hiring them. These actors will be hired for a day. They will be
given their script, prior to the studio booking, to learn and practise. The studio
will be hired for one day, costing 120 for the booking, and 10 for every other
person who uses the room. Because of this, it adds another 40 to the budget for
myself and the 3 other actors. The cost of hiring the recording studio comes with
both equipment and staff to help with the production, minimizing the costs.
Broadcasting the radio drama on BBC Radio 4 will minimize the cost of sound
effects, as we will have access to the BBC sound bank. Although, I have set aside
another 70 for any other sound effects that might need to be bought from audio
stock websites.
BROADCASTING

As spoken about in the previous section of the treatment, Last Chance will be
broadcasted by the British Broadcasting Channel (BBC) radio. The specific radio
station is BBC Radio 4. This is because of the large audience rates, and its latest
increase. According to RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) Radio 4 attracted
more than 11.5 million adults - up from 10.6 million a week from April to June in
2016. Because a large amount of the target market for the drama is adults,
broadcasting it on BBC radio 4 will gain a higher audience rate. I chose BBC radio
4 rather than BBC radio 1 because although it has a large demographic of those
between the ages of 15 to 29 years old, which is also the specific age group my
drama targets, only 29% of their audio listening time is spent listening to live
radio in 2015. This is much lower than the average of 71% for all adults.

To target this younger demographic, I will use

also broadcast the drama over BBC radio 1a
YouTube channel, which has a growing number
of subscribers compared to the Live Radio.
Equally, I will also use their Podcast channel as
a way of broadcasting the drama, so that they
can download the drama, over either IPlayer, or
over Podcasts to listen as they go, and gives
the younger demographic a way to adapt the
show around their lives rather than the
broadcasting time and date.
