2. Course Description
This course introduces advanced statistical concepts and techniques in quality control, graphical
methods for data presentation and quality improvement, statistical basis for control charts, descriptive
statistics, discrete and continuous statistical distributions, inferences about process control, confidence
intervals and hypothesis testing, statistical basis for control charts, control charts for variables and
attributes, analysis of variance. Cumulative sum and exponentially weighted moving average control
charts, introduction to multivariate control charts, linear regression, principal component analysis,
multivariate exponentially weighted moving average control chart, acceptance sampling, experimental
design, design of experiments in process improvement, factorial experiments, factorial design, more on
design of experiments, and fractional replications of designs.
3. Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Apply control charts to monitor the quality characteristics of a product or process
2. Learn techniques for multivariate process monitoring and diagnosis
3. Design and analyze experiments for improving a manufacturing process
4. Implement statistical process control projects in MATLAB.
4. Schedule
Week 1: Course Overview. Introduction to Statistical Quality Control.

Week 2: Statistical Process Control using MATLAB.
Week 3: Descriptive Statistics, Discrete and Continuous Statistical Distributions.
Week 4: Inferences about Process Control. Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Testing. Statistical
Basis for Control Charts.
Week 5: Control Charts for Variables and Attributes.
Week 6: Cumulative Sum and Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Charts. Midterm Review.
Week 7: Midterm exam.
Week 8: Introduction to Multivariate Control Charts. Principal Component Analysis.

Week 10: Experimental Design. Design of Experiments in Process Improvement.

6. Assignments and Grading
Assignments:
Homework (2): 10%

Midterm Exam: 35%
Term Project: 10%
Final Exam: 45%
Details:
1. Homework Assignments (2): must be done individually. Due dates: Feb. 13, 2017 and Apr. 3, 2017.
Late assignments suffer a penalty rate of 20% per day, up to 5 days (weekends count towards the 5 days).
Assignments that are more than 5 days late are penalized by 100%. The solutions will be posted on the course
website. No submissions will be allowed after the solutions are published.
2. Midterm Exam: First 6 Lectures and Homework 1. Exam date: Feb. 27, 2017.
3. Project Report: Must be done individually. Each student is to research and write a
comprehensive report on the topics that will be provided by the instructor. More details about the
project will be posted on the course website. Due date: Apr. 16, 2017.
4. Final Exam: will take place during the examination period at the end of the semester. Students
should not make any specific arrangements to leave the city until the final exam date is posted.
Failing Grade:
Plagiarism, absenteeism, lack of preparation, and lack of effort will result in a failing grade.

Add or remove pages from an examination booklet or take the booklet out of an exam room
Acquire exam or assignment answers or questions
Write an exam for someone else or have someone write an exam for you
Submit false documents such as medical notes or student records
Falsify data or research results

8. Students Responsibilities
