Manila, Philippines President Benigno S. Aquino III and SM Prime president Hans Sy led the
launch of SM City North EDSAs solar rooftop project, so far the biggest project in the country, on
Monday.
This is significant in the light of the challenges that will confront our energy sector, Aquino said.
The solar rooftop project is led by 21-year old Leandro Leviste from Solar Philippines.
The SM Group first launched the solar project in SM Xiamen in China, with 1.1 megawatts solar
energy produced by 3,740 panels.
According to SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia, the SM North EDSA solar project, powered by
5,750 solar panels installed at the rooftop of the multilevel parking building, is expected to generate
1.5 megawatts of power for the malls 16,000 lighting fixtures, 59 escalators and 20 elevators. This
represents 5 percent of the malls total electricity requirements.
Using the solar panels can generate up to 2 million in savings every month for SM North,
Garcia said SM has two rooftop solar power projects by Solar Philippines in the pipeline in SM
Dasmarinas in Cavite and SM Mall of Asia in Paranaque.
The SM City Dasmarinas will have 3,740 solar panels that are expected to generate 0.8 megawatts
of power, expected to be operational by May 2015. While SM City Mall of Asia will have 10,500 solar
panels that will generate 2.7 megawatts of power, may go online by the end of 2015.
The SM Group is one of the private companies that support the DOEs interruptible Load program,
which aims to ease the demand for electricity and prevent the projected power crisis in the summer
of 2015.
SM North solar
rooftop lists on
energy spot market

The solar powered rooftop at the SM City North Edsa (SMNE) mall has
been listed on the countrys energy spot market as one of the new
sources of power for the Luzon grid.
Unlike other solar rooftop projects which are dedicated for self-use of
the building, Solar Philippines SMNE solar power plant is the only
commercial rooftop solar project within the heart of the Metro Manila
that is connected to the Luzon grid, thus, contributing additional
capacity to the power supply within Luzon areas, according to DOE
data.
The SM North Edsa solar powered rooftop, the largest solar powered
rooftop in a commercial establishment in Southeast Asia, is
composed of 5,760 solar panels. It produces enough power to
energize 1,000 households or 150,000 10-watt light bulbs or charge
214,285 cellular phones.
The power generated from the solar panels could offset 1,200 tons of
C02 or the equivalent of planting 6,000 trees per year.
SM Prime has put up the first SM mall to operate using solar energy in
Xiamen in mainland China using 3,740 solar panels, generating 1.1-
MW power. For this pioneering effort, SM City Xiamen was awarded
the Mall China Golden Mall Awards 2014 Excellent Upgrade last April
in Shanghai by the Mall China Information Center, the first nonprofit
organization in Mainland China catering to the retail property sector
and the countrys largest shopping center retail organization.
