1301 Excel Assignment Fall 2016
EXCEL ASSIGNMENT
This assignment tests your proficiency in using Excel, as discussed throughout the semester. It is
worth a total of 150 points.
INSTRUCTIONS
Open the file 1301_excel_Fall2016.
Take a few minutes to become familiar with the structure of the data in the file.
1. Rename the main sheet Master_source_1 and color its tab background in dark blue.
Also, format the header row (row 1) with dark blue background and yellow text. Change
the font to Arial Bold, size 11. (5 points)
2. Create a new sheet and name it Cases. The ID number variable was created using a
RANDBETWEEN function to generate the number values. Create a new variable called
ID number1 in the Cases sheet by copying only the values (but not the formulas) of the
original ID number variable. Using the RIGHT and CONCATENATE functions
demonstrated in class, create a new variable called ID number2 in the Cases sheet so
that each ID number value from the ID number1 variable fulfills the following
conditions:
o The first 3 digits of the ID number is represented by three asterisks (***)
o The last 3 digits of the ID number remain the same. (15 points)
For example, if the ID number was 123456, the new ID number will be
***456.
3. The Rate paid variable represents values as U.S. dollar amounts. Format the values as
numbers in accounting format, with two decimals. (5 points)
4. Recode the Gender variable by replacing the existing values with 1 for male and 2
for female. (5 points)
5. Sort the full data set by the Rate paid variable in ascending order (smallest to largest).
(5 points)
6. Insert a filter on the header row. Filter the data in the Party size variable so that it
shows only the solo travelers. Then filter the data in the Satisfaction 1 variable to show
only the values of 4 and 5. Count how many rows of data are still displayed
(excluding the header row) and write this number in the sheet called Cases. Then
remove all filters so that the full data set is displayed again. (15 points)
7. Insert a pivot table as a new sheet. Rename this new sheet as Pivot. In the pivot table,
represent the Frequency of stay as rows, with data represented as both numbers
(frequencies) and percentages of total. Represent percentages without the decimals. Copy
the table and paste (values only) in the Cases sheet. Format the table using your
favorite table display template. (20 points)
8. In the pivot table, represent the Stay duration (as rows) against Education (as
columns). Remove the blank options and filter out (do not display) the 7 or more nights
category from the Stay duration field. Represent data as percentages of each row,
rounding off to two decimals. Copy the table and paste (values only) in the Cases sheet.
Format the table using your favorite table display template. (15 points)
9. For each case, calculate the TOTAL revenues by multiplying the Rate paid with the
Revenues retained, then subtracting Other commissions. Round off to two decimals
(20 points)
10. Calculate the average scores for Satisfaction1, Satisfaction2 and Satisfaction3
fields. Round off to two decimals. Create a column graph showing all three values on a
scale from 0 to 7 (and not the default scale that Excel chooses). Place values on top of the
column and color the columns in dark blue. Paste the graph in the Cases sheet. (15
points)
11. Using the AVERAGEIF function demonstrated in class, calculate the averages Rate
paid for each of the Party size variable categories (for example, for Solo, Couples,
etc.). Present your results in a table in the Cases sheet. (15 points)
12. Print the entire workbook (all sheets) as a pdf file. If your version of Excel prints each
sheet as a separate pdf file, upload all pdf files for grading. In the left part part of the
header, place your first and last name and your student ID number (not your social
security number). Insert the sheet name in the center section of the footer. (5 points)
