I was with Overseas Volunteers (OV) for a year after leaving university, and I
was sent to an isolated village in Chad, about 500 kilometers from the
Djamena. Coming from a rich country, I got quite a shock, as conditions were
much harder than I had expected. But after a few days I soon got used to living
there. The people were always friendly and helpful and I soon began to
appreciate how beautiful the countryside was.
One of my jobs was to supply the village with water. The well was along walk
away, and the women used to spend a long time every day carrying heavy pots
backwards and forwards. So I contacted the organization and arranged to have
some pipes delivered. We built simple pipeline and a pump, and it worked first
time. It wasnt perfect there were a few leaks, but it made a great difference
to the villagers. Who had never had running water before. And not only did we
have running water, but in the evening it was hot, because the pipe had been
lying in the sun all day.
All in all, I think my time with OV was a good experience. Although it was not
well-paid, it was well worth doing, and I would recommend it to anyone who was
considering working for a charity.
Finally, theres one more reason why Ill never regret working for OV. A few
months before I left, I met and fell in love with another volunteer, and we got
married when we returned to England.

Read the passage and do the task below

Here on Skye I do more than deliver letters and parcels. There arent any busses
or trains on this part of island, so the post office also runs a passenger service.
The bus which I drive has eleven seats, so people from the farms and villages
can get into Broadford for shopping or for work.
I live in Elgol, a small village on the south-west coast of the island. I leave Elgol
post office every morning at 8a.m, and drive my bus 24 km to Broadford. I stop
for passengers and empty the five post boxes along the road.
I also pick up the school children that live along my route and take them to the
school in Broadford. Theres a school for young children in Elgol., but the other
children have to travel into the town.
It usually takes me about three hours to finish my round. I take shopping to
some of the elderly people who cant always get to Broadford ; I deliver milk
and newspapers six days a week. I shouldnt deliver animals, but I sometimes
take a puppy or rabbit as a passenger. The Post Office charges people, of
course, for all these extra services. Its 70p to travel from Elgol to Broadford and
it costs 10p to deliver a pint of milk.
People often ask me how I like living here on Skye, especially since I come from
the city. Well, Its difficult to explain, but here I feel part of the community. Its
good to know that you are helping people. Id hate to live in the city again

Half the brain a child will have as an adult has already developed by the time he is
four years old. It is now recognized that children who have been encouraged and
stimulated into mental activity during the early years will become more intelligent
adults.
Language, the way we express ourselves, is a vital part of learning. A baby learns his
native tongue naturally by hearing speech around him if the speech he hears is rapid,
not clear and never directed at him then he learns slowly and speaks as badly. A child
of two or three years who cant make his desires known or put his thoughts into words
will usually become angry. His relationships with others will get worse. If the speech a
baby hears around him is clear, and his family talk to him, he will gain a satisfactory
command of language directly, by his mother, his language ability will be greater. By
the time he is two, it is quite possible for him to have a vocabulary of two thousand
words and by the time he is three, he will be able to read. Once ahead he will stay
ahead

Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain
traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries.
Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up.
It has been the law for about 300 years that all theatres are closed on Sundays. No
letters are delivered, only a few Sunday papers are published.
To this day an English family prefers a house with a garden to a flat in a modern house
with central heating. English people like gardens. Sometimes the garden in front of the
house is a little square covered with cement painted green in imitation of grass and a
box of flowers.
Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different in Scotland, Ireland, Wale
