BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion
Dec. 26, 2012 - May 26, 2013
Gain a new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human with
BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion, an educational exhibit that literally, as
well as figuratively, goes under the skin allowing the public to look at what
only doctors and scientists normally see first-hand. The exhibit offers a once-
in-a-lifetime opportunity to understand our own physiology and health through
an extraordinary display of over 100 authentic human specimens, including
whole bodies, individual organs and transparent body slices preserved through
a polymer impregnation process that replaces fluids with reactive plastics.
Various body poses, including a basketball player, discus thrower, female
acrobat and the thinker showcase anatomical displays along with skeletal,
muscular, respiratory, and circulatory systems. In addition, individual organs,
such as a smokers tar-coated black lung, aim to educate visitors about the
inner workings of the human body and show the effects of poor health, good
health and lifestyle choices.
Group Rate: $12
Includes Explorer package benefits and
The Human Body IMAX film with special exhibit.
BODIES HUMAN is recommended for ages 12 and older. The exhibit is a great
educational resource for learning about health-related issues such as smoking, diet,
and lifestyle choices. An exhibit educator guide is available to download from the
Michigan Science Centers website.

Diabetes: A Deeper Look

Dec. 26, 2012 - May 26, 2013
Featuring a collection of interactive displays built in and
around a giant walkthrough blood vessel, Diabetes: A Deeper
Look helps to answer important questions about one of
Americas leading health epidemicsdiabetes. Enter through
a giant cell structure pulsating with 40,000 LED lights that
simulates how insulin helps get glucose into cells. Inside
and around the vessel, 22 hands-on interactive exhibits and
displays explain the role of insulin in the body; how people can
be affected by diabetes; the importance of diet and exercise
as the first line of defense to preventing and managing type 2
diabetes; the types of medications used to help control blood
sugar levels, including insulin; and the research and discovery
of medications used to help treat diabetes.
Diabetes: A Deeper Look is a free exhibition with paid museum
admission. An exhibit educator guide is available to download from
the Michigan Science Centers website.

Imagine a place where pint-size scientists can become veterinarians, test the
laws of physics in a field house, learn about mixtures and solutions in the
kitchen of their very own diner, or just splash, crawl and play. That place is Kids
Town, a gallery for children ages 5 and under.
Kids Town features engaging activity areas in a child-scaled town where little
ones can develop their social and motor skills while exploring the basic science
concepts we encounter every day.
In keeping with the guidelines of the Michigan Board of Education Early
Childhood Standards of Quality for Pre-kindergarten, our gallery uses active,
hands-on experiences to foster positive attitudes toward science and build a
foundation for future, more sophisticated learning.

The Michigan Science Center features more than 200 hands-on exhibits
that explore space, health, physical science, engineering and more.
Highlights include:

Marvel at four towering rockets in our Rocket Laboratory
for a glimpse into space travel. The models, with cutaway
sections showing how they work, are built to 10:1 scale,
making them as large as 36 feet tall, stretching from the lower level of
the Science Center to the roof and beyond. Feel the rumble of a launch,
see how Apollo astronauts traveled to the moon and enjoy hands-on
activities. Launch your own rocket to the planets using only air and
water, learn how rockets work, and discover how fuel is made!
Peer through three telescopes positioned at varying heights that point
to various astronomical targets throughout the museum. Work a Solar
System Distance Scale to position each planet the correct scale distance
from the sun. See an array of astronomical images displayed along our
Dassault Systmes Planetarium.

Health and Nutrition

Start Working it Off! In this exhibit that stresses the value of fitness
and nutrition. Ride a bicycle, walk on a treadmill and propel a wheel-
chair to demonstrate the effort required to burn off calories. Race to
see who can burn off the calorie equivalent of various foods and see
the spectrum of calories in various foods from low-calorie broccoli to
a high-calorie double cheeseburger. Dont be a Couch Potato! Take a
seat between two overstuffed potatoes and learn how sitting around,
watching television and eating the wrong foods could result in a
budding waste line. Then get up off that couch and step over to the
NutriMat and choose from a variety of breakfast foods to see if you are
making healthy decisions.
Watch out for the Snack Attack! Whack the fat, salt and sugar right out
of your diet. If that doesnt convince you to make healthy choices, learn
the facts behind nutrition labels at the Body Mass Index. Look behind
the labels of real junk food and other foods that you think are healthy
. . . but really arent! Then move over to one of the Body Mass Index
scales to learn What the Scale Doesnt Tell You. Regardless of your
weight, see whether you fall on the healthy BMI range.
Take a trip to As Time Goes By to see, feel and hear what its like to
have glaucoma, osteoarthritis, hearing loss or Alzheimers disease.
Discover what you can do to postpone or ward off the effects of aging.
