Lecture 7 - Circuit Switching

Circuit switching creates a direct physical connection between two devices such as phones or computers. It uses switches to connect an input to an output link in either a space-division or time-division manner. Space-division switches like crossbar switches connect inputs to outputs spatially using electronic switches at each crosspoint but require many crosspoints. Time-division switches like time-slot interchange switches use time-division multiplexing to change the time slot ordering to connect inputs to outputs, needing no crosspoints but creating delays processing each connection. The best approach combines space and time-division switching to optimize physical connections and temporal allocation of resources.

CIRCUIT SWITCHING

SWITCH
Are hardware and/or software devices capable of
creating temporary connections between two or more
devices linked to the switch but not to each other.

3 METHODS OF SWITCHING
1. Circuit Switching
2. Packet Switching
3. Message Switching
CIRCUIT SWITCHING
CIRCUIT SWITCHING

Creates a direct physical connection

between two devices such as phones or
computers.
CIRCUIT SWITCH

Is a device with n inputs and m outputs

that creates a temporary connection
between an input and an output link.
FOLDED SWITCH
n-by-n folded switch connects n lines in full-duplex mode

Circuit switching can use either of two technologies:

1. SPACE-DIVISION SWITCH
2. TIME-DIVISION SWITCH
The paths in the circuit are separated
from each other spatially.

SPACE-DIVISION SWITCH
*CROSSBAR SWITCH
*MULTISTAGE SWITCH
CROSSBAR SWITCH
Connects n inputs to m outputs in a grid,
using electronic micro-switches (transistors) at
each crosspoint.

The major limitation of this design is the

number of crosspoints required.
MULTISTAGE SWITCH
Combines crossbar switches in several stages.

The solution to the limitation of the crossbar switch.

MULTIPLE PATHS

The reduction in the number of crosspoints

results in s phenomenon called BLOCKING
during periods of heavy traffic.
It uses TDM to achieve switching.

TIME-DIVISION SWITCH
*TIME-SLOT INTERCHANGE
*TDM BUS
TIME-SLOT INTERCHANGE (TSI)
It changes the ordering of the slots based on
the desired connections.
TDM BUS
The input and output lines are connected to a
high-speed bus through input and output gates
(microswitches).
Combining the two results in switches
that are optimized both physically and
temporally.
SPACE- AND TIME-DIVISION
SWITCH COMBINATION
ADVANTAGE & DISADVANTAGE
SDS advantage: INSTANTANEOUS
TDS advantage: NEEDS NO CROSSPOINTS

SDS disadvantage:
NUMBER OF CROSSPOINTS REQUIRES TO MAKE
ACCEPTABLE BLOCKING
TDS disadvantage:
PROCESSING EACH CONNECTION CREATES
DELAYS.
