Hasta Mudra
Hasta Mudra
Mudra
Mudra is a Sanskrit word for gesture, symbol, or expression. A Mudra in yoga is usually
made by the positioning of our fingers and thumb. This creates certain neuronal
connections, to impact the flow of subtle energies and balance out the elements within
us.
Mudras are easy to perform anytime, although sitting in the lotus position and focusing
on the healing can be an advantage. Although mudras can be used for healing certain
ailments, regular practise of mudras will contribute to your overall good health and can
be used as a preventive measure. Continuous practice of the mudras will create minute
changes in your body using pulse centres on parts of your hands, which trigger certain
healing processes within the corresponding body part.
Hasta Mudra is meant to ensure that health remains in our hands. A hasta mudra is
a hand gesture used in yoga and Indian religions that can be symbolic, ritualistic and/or
therapeutic. The term comes from the Sanskrit word Hasta means hand and Mudra
means "seal", "mark", or "gesture.
The physical body is made up of five elements namely, Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Sky.
A mudra is a gesture or positioning of the hands intended to direct energy flow and to
connect parts of the body to the brain as life force energy flows through the body. Certain
yoga mudras are believed to instigate particular energy flows and stimulate different
emotions, spiritual reactions and reactions in the body. By pressing together, curling,
touching or pointing different fingers or parts of the hands in different ways, you can
stimulate reflexes from the hand to the brain.
Minute pressure on the pulse centers of different parts of our hands, triggers multiple
healing processes within the body part associated with it. The Hasta Mudra channelizes
Pranic Energy in our body just like the waves of the ocean generates tidal energy or
like a short circuit that is used to boost electrical impulses. Nadis and chakras radiate
Pranic energy.
Mudras help the practitioner to redirect energy within themselves and also create
barriers to prevent the escape of Prana. Hasta Mudras stimulate the brain stem and
influence unconscious reflexes to tap the potential of our mind, body, and prana.
Hasta mudras can be practiced seated, prone, standing or even walking, as long as the
posture is symmetrical and the body is relaxed. These mudras are often used to focus the
mind in meditation and to control the flow of energy during asana practice.
There are many types of mudras, each thought to have a specific effect on the body and
mind by clearing the psychic centers and energy channels. Although the hand mudras
are the most common in yoga, there are also head, postural, lock and perineal mudras.
Mudra Therapy
Believe it or not, your health is in your hands! Our hands are particularly blessed with
virtues of wellness. The four fingers and the thumb represent the fivfff major building
blocks or the Panchamahabhootas of which the entire universe is made viz. Sky (Ether),
Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
According to natural sciences, disease is nothing but a limitation that emerges in the
continuity and balance of these five elements.
The human hand contains about 100,000 nerves and each fingertip has about 3,000
nerve receptors, just under the surface of the skin. In the brain the hand takes up a very
large proportion of the brain's cortex, and each area of the hand is linked to a different
part of the brain. When we apply pressure to the fingers and hands, we stimulate related
brain areas. So we use hasta mudras to activate pressure points, give messages to the
body-mind energy system and change brain patterns.
The physical body (and the universe) consists of 5 elements- Fire, Air, Sky, Earth,
and Water. A Mudra connects the brain to the body and as a consequence, life force
energy or prana begins to flow through. The four fingers and the single thumb represent
these building blocks of the universe known as the Panchamahabhutas. Reflexes can
be stimulated by actions like pressing the hand, curling, touching and pointing different
fingers. According to the philosophy of Hasta Mudra, diseases are blockages or
limitations in the balance of the 5 elements. The four fingers and the thumb correspond
to each of these elements:
Fire element is the important one and when fire element goes weak, various ailments
come to the body and death sets in when the fire element dies. Joining the fire element
(thumb) with other elements (other fingers) vitalises the other elements also.
The body is made up of 5 elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. When these 5
elements are not in balance we get various physical and psychological ailments. The
energy from the body radiates out mainly through the tip of the nose, lips, finger tips and
toes. When the thumb gets in contact with the other fingers, energy is directed back to
vitalize various parts of our body. This is called as circuit bypass. Mudras and Bandas go
hand in hand. Banda help in locking the energy whereas mudras help in redirecting the
energy.
In our puranas, we see our Gods and Goddesses expressing in different Mudra. Mudras
are the expression of our inner feeling. In the Tantra shastra Mudra is defined as the one
which gives happiness. Mudras are part of Yoga and it is also called as Yoga Mudra.
Mudras done using hands are called Hasta Mudra (Hand Gesture)

but not too tight that you might drain the blood off of your fingers. Then, aim to keep your hands in
that position all throughout your whole meditation session.
In order for the mudra to be fully effective, you have to have the right body position and mind
condition. You do not have to stick with the same mudra again and again; you can try different mudras
for your meditation sessions. Match the mudras you practice to your needs. Be mindful of distracting
thoughts and try to let them go. Sit somewhere you are comfortable on and try to be relaxed as much
as possible.
If you want to do them while walking, try keeping a rhythmic phase. If not, then you should sit, pull
your chin in a bit and let your neck relax. Breathe evenly, slow, flowing and gentle.
