103307 Refrigeration & Air Conditioning

Refrigeration Systems

1 An air-conditioning/refrigeration system operates for conditions of a temperature of the

refrigerant (R-22) in the condenser of 50 C and a temperature of the refrigerant in the
evaporator of 5 C. Determine the COP for the following situations.
a) Carnot cycle.
b) An isentropic compressor efficiency of 100%.
c) An isentropic compressor efficiency of 0.7.
d) An isentropic compressor efficiency of 100% and a condensing temperature increase
of 5 C to 55 C.
e) An isentropic compressor efficiency of 100% and an evaporating temperature decrease
of 5 C to 0 C.
f) An isentropic compressor efficiency of 0.7, a condensing temperature of 55 C, and an
evaporating temperature of 0 C.
g) Draw some conclusion from your results.

2 A domestic refrigerator uses R-134a as refrigerant and operates between evaporator and
condenser temperature of -26C and 55C in an ambient of 45C. The liquid leaves the
condenser at 43C. It is further subcooled to 30C in a regenerative heat exchanger in
which the vapour from the evaporator is heated to 30C. The compressor displacement
volume is 433 cm3. Calculate the refrigerating capacity and power consumption of the
refrigerator if the volumetric efficiency of the compressor can be taken as 0.68, and its
adiabatic efficiency 0.85. Also find the compressor discharge temperature. The compressor
is directly coupled to a motor running at 2900 rpm.

3 Calculations for single-effect water-Lithium Bromide system. The operating conditions for
a water-lithium bromide chilled-water plant for air conditioning are as follows:
Generator temperature 120C, Condenser temperature 50C, Chilled-water temperature
5C, Absorber temperature 50C
Determine for one ton refrigeration capacity, the following:
Coefficient of performance
Mass flow rate of water-LiBr solution entering pump
The amounts of heat transfer at generator, absorber, condenser and evaporator.
