1. (10 marks) Expand the given function, f (x), in a Fourier series
Show that the indicial roots of the singularity do not differ by an integer and use the methods
of Frobenius to obtain two linearly independent series solutions about x = 0.
4. (5 marks) If the temperature on a rectangular plate is given by T (x, y) = 100 2x2 y 2 , find
the path a heat-seeking insect would take starting at the point (3, 4) as it moves in the direction
in which the temperature increases most rapidly. Use the fact that if ~r(t) =< x(t), y(t) >
then T =< x (t), y (t) >.
5. (5 marks) Find the curvature of an elliptical helix that is described by the curve
where F~ = (2z + x)i + (y z)j + (x + y)k and the curve C is the triangle with vertices (1, 0, 0),
(0, 1, 0) and (0, 0, 1) Assume the positive orientation of the curve C.
12. (10 marks) Find the volume of the object bound by the graphs of x2 +y 2 = 4, x2 +y 2 +z 2 = 16
and z = 0 using a triple integral.
13. (10 marks) Find the outward flux of the vector field F~ = x3 i + y 3 j + z 3 k through S which is
the the surface of the sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 = a2 .
