Tutorials:: Stress & Strain - Axial Loading

This document contains 8 questions related to stress and strain concepts in materials subjected to axial loading. The questions cover topics like determining stress and factor of safety given elongation of a rod, drawing stress-strain plots and calculating modulus and yield values from a tensile test, calculating deflection given applied load and material properties, and determining stresses, reactions and deflections at points in loaded structures.

STRESS & STRAIN

AXIAL LOADING
Question 1

Two gage marks are placed exactly 250mm apart on a 12mm diameter aluminium rod with
E = 73GPa and an ultimate strength of 140MPa. Knowing that the distance between the
gage marks is 250.28mm after a load is applied, determine;

(a) the stress in the rod,

(b) the factor of safety.
Question 2
Elongation
Load (kN) (mm)
0 0
11.30973 0.048
33.9292 0.144
39.58407 0.192
39.58407 0.560
Figure 1 Table 1

A tensile test is carried out on a specimen as shown in the Figure 1 below. The applied
load and measured elongation of the specimen are given in Table 1. Assume that the
material reacts in linearly elastic perfectly plastic manner,

(i) Draw the stress versus strain plot of the above materials.

(ii) Calculate the Youngs modulus of the material.

(ii) Determine the yield stress and the yield strain of the material
Question 3

A single axial load of magnitude P = 58kN is applied at end C of the brass rod ABC.
Knowing that E = 105GPa, determine the diameter d of the portion BC for which the
deflection of point C will be 3mm.
Question 4

In a standard tensile test, an aluminium rod of 20mm diameter is

subjected to a tension force of P = 30kN. Knowing that = 0.35 and E
= 70GPa, determine;

(a) the elongation of the rod in a 150mm gage length,

(b) the change in diameter of the rod.
Question 5

A fabric used in air-inflated structures is subjected to a biaxial loading that results in

normal stresses x = 120MPa and z = 160MPa. Knowing that the properties of the fabric
can be approximated as E = 87GPa and = 0.34, determine the change in length of;
(a) side AB,
(b) side BC.
Question 6

Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C and restrained
by rigid supports at A and E. For loading shown and knowing that Es = 200GPa and Eb =
220GPa, determine:
(a) The reactions at A and E
(b) The deflection of point C
Question 7

The plastic block shown is bonded to a rigid

support and to a vertical plate to which a 240-kN
load P is applied. Knowing that for the plastic used
G = 1050 MPa, determine the deflection of the
plate.
Question 8

For P = 58kN and d = 12mm, determine the maximum stress:

(a) at hole,
(b) at fillets.
